2. Define the concept of communication.

communication including documentation.
7. Be able to discuss implications of the nurse’s values on interpersonal
communication and the need for values clarification by the nurse.

Passport for Entry: Learning strategies

1. Read, “The Spirit Catches You…”

2. Watch the Video, “Making Changes.” Found under “Videos” of the Modules
Navigator Section.

3. Review the power point, Communication, under Week 1 of the Modules


Section.

4. Respond to the following:

Many issues were misunderstood during the communication process of, “The Spirit
Catches You…”

1. Identify only one reason successful communication may have failed between
the Lee family and health care providers (do not use language please), OR
identify a successful communication interchange from the book between any
of the characters. 

In addition, see The KSA for Pre-Seminar Activity for Communication and
link your reason to the assigned reading from Potter and Perry and/or your
Giddens text book reading.)

2. Consider the Video, "Making Changes" .    Based on the four techniques for
creating change employed by young Hiram Gurney, identify only one
technique from the four he employed in the video that you would have
chosen to focus on working with the Lee family.  Please do not discuss the
rationale for your choice here.  Rationales may be discussed in class.

dropbox prior to the seminar via Canvas once access is available

At the end of the seminar session, the student will be able to:

Plan and execute nursing care (nursing process) using therapeutic communication
techniques.

Attitude: Post-seminar

1. The student will be able to


a. Identify the role their values play in communication and identify
how they physically manifest these values when communicating.
For example, how the student uses body language when
communicating
b. Express that they will be more aware of their own body language,
values and tone of voice when communicating.
c. Identify the components of communication as reflected in the
Circular Transactional Model.
d. Begin using therapeutic techniques. At the end of the seminar, the
students should all be able to identify /use two to three
therapeutic techniques appropriately and with comfort.
e. Have beginning ability to use SBAR for giving hand off or end of
shift report and be able to identify proper usage of SBAR for EHR
documentation.
f. Be familiar with the CUS method for navigating difficult situations.

At the end of the seminar session, the student will be able to answer the
following questions in class or after class:

a. What are the student’s values and the impact of their values on effective
communication
b. What are the implications and the impact of body language and tone
(patient and nurse) as part of the communication process
c. What is the significance of using a uniform approach to professional
communication of information about the patient: SBAR, CUS
d. The components of the communication process as identified by the
circular transactional model. (Sender, receiver, channels, etc.)

CLINICAL OBJECTIVES:

1. The student will be able to utilize therapeutic communication techniques in


the health care setting.
2. The student will be able to accurately assess the impact of their values and
beliefs on their communication style and to actively make adjustments to
provide safe, non-judgmental care.

iv. Therapeutic communication- personal communication with others with
the goal of having medicinal, healing, or comforting properties. Therapeutic
communication focuses on feelings and emotions and the impact of feelings and
emotions on the healing process. Therapeutic communications is supportive in
nature.
v. Referent-motivation of one person to talk with another
vi. Channel-the way to send the message to receiver through visual, auditory
and tactile sensors.
vii. Interpersonal variable-factors that influence the communication.
viii. Feedback-a message that the sender receives from the receiver, indicates
whether the receiver understood the message.
ix. Denotative-the same meaning for the same word in a common language.
x. Connotative- interpretation of the word meaning
xi. Values the beliefs a person holds that are most important to them that guide
their actions, decisions and thoughts
Values clarification- Self-awareness of choice, commitment to subsequent actions.
Having a sense of how one's actions influence their choices
xii. Verbal communication-spoken or written words with vocabulary,
intonation, pacing aspects.
xiii. Non-Verbal communication- All communication between people that does
not involve words.

3. the scope and categories of communication-the scope of the
communication concept ranges from effective communication to no communication.
Three primary categories of communication are linguistic, paralinguistic, and
metacommunication.
1. Linguistic - Is the verbal exchange of messages through spoken words and
written symbols.
2. Paralinguistic - Non-verbal exchange of symbols that show cues about emotions,
moods, states of a person.
3. Metacommunication- Factors that comprise the context of the message which
create meaning. This involves how messages are received and interpreted.
4. Identify risk factors for alterations in communication across the lifespan,
however, focus primarily on the senior adult patient.
