1. Identify only one reason successful communication may have failed between
the Lee family and health care providers (do not use language please), OR
identify a successful communication interchange from the book between any
of the characters.
In addition, see The KSA for Pre-Seminar Activity for Communication and
link your reason to the assigned reading from Potter and Perry and/or your
Giddens text book reading.)
2. Consider the Video, "Making Changes" . Based on the four techniques for
creating change employed by young Hiram Gurney, identify only one
technique from the four he employed in the video that you would have
chosen to focus on working with the Lee family. Please do not discuss the
rationale for your choice here. Rationales may be discussed in class.

Pre-Seminar Objectives (SLo)
i. Interpersonal communication-between people
ii. Intrapersonal communication- self talk
iii. Transpersonal communication- Spiritual/religious. Interaction that occurs
within a person's spiritual domain
iv. Therapeutic communication- personal communication with others with
the goal of having medicinal, healing, or comforting properties. Therapeutic
communication focuses on feelings and emotions and the impact of feelings and
emotions on the healing process. Therapeutic communications is supportive in
nature.
v. Referent-motivation of one person to talk with another
vi. Channel-the way to send the message to receiver through visual, auditory
and tactile sensors.
vii. Interpersonal variable-factors that influence the communication.
viii. Feedback-a message that the sender receives from the receiver, indicates
whether the receiver understood the message.
ix. Denotative-the same meaning for the same word in a common language.
x. Connotative- interpretation of the word meaning
xi. Values the beliefs a person holds that are most important to them that guide
their actions, decisions and thoughts
Values clarification- Self-awareness of choice, commitment to subsequent actions.

3. the scope and categories of communication-the scope of the
communication concept ranges from effective communication to no communication.
Three primary categories of communication are linguistic, paralinguistic, and
metacommunication.
1. Linguistic - Is the verbal exchange of messages through spoken words and
written symbols.
2. Paralinguistic - Non-verbal exchange of symbols that show cues about emotions,
moods, states of a person.
3. Metacommunication- Factors that comprise the context of the message which
create meaning. This involves how messages are received and interpreted.
4. Identify risk factors for alterations in communication across the lifespan,
however, focus primarily on the senior adult patient.
5. Relate assessment findings (history & physical exam) to communication.
6. Consider/discuss collaborative clinical management of communication
including documentation.
7. Be able to discuss implications of the nurse’s values on interpersonal
communication and the need for values clarification by the nurse.
8. Evaluate the relationship of related concepts (see above) to communication.
