Essay Questions
1. What course of study will you pursue at your chosen institution and why have you
chosen this field?
The field that I have chosen to pursue a career in is Early Childhood Education with a Special
Education endorsement. I am planning on attending Missouri State University in Springfield,
Missouri to receive this degree. My reasoning behind choosing this field of study is that I love
not only being around children but also helping them complete their learning tasks. My Senior
year provided me with the opportunity to receive a work-study program so that I could serve as
a paraprofessional at our Elementary School as well as being the first-grade teacher at our
afterschool program. This opportunity has not only given me some experience in working with
children who have different learning disabilities, but it has also allowed me to become very
confident that I want to become a teacher. Not every day is an easy one, but looking back on it I
would not change the opportunity to experience something like this for the World.
2. Briefly describe the school and community activities in which you have been
involved.
The activities I have taken part in throughout my high school career have left a significant
impact on my life and have helped make me into the person I am today. Being involved in
Speech, One-Act, and our spring musical has pushed me to my limits and gotten me out of my
comfort zone. As a result of being involved in these activities, I am more of an extroverted
person than I was in middle school. I’m not afraid to step out of what I have deemed comfortable
to get to the place that I need to be and that is mainly due to these three activities. Participating
in Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), Hope Squad, National Honor Society, and
Young Women of Excellence has allowed me to obtain a considerably large amount of
leadership skills. The people in these organizations are always in the spotlight and are expected
to step up into the role of being the leader in every situation that comes their way. In my high
school career, I also engaged in volleyball, track, and unified bowling. These activities have
taught me the importance of having grit and determination and how imperative each role on the
team is. For example, a person on the team can be the best player but have no leadership skills
while the person who really gets little to no playing time may have the eBay leadership skills on
the team. Both of these people play a key role on their team, but it is for different reasons that
they are crucial players on their team.
3. Give an example of someone whom you admire, and explain why you admire that
person.
I would say that the person I admire the most at this point in my life is my mother, Dr. Elizabeth
Ericson. There are so many reasons why I admire her in the way that I do. She’s hardworking,
determined, a leader, and she puts all she has into everything that she does. My mom is one of
the greatest educators that I know and is the reason that I have decided to pursue a career in
Early Childhood Education. She has taught me the importance of being a teacher and just how
imperative the role of a teacher can be for children in today’s society. My mom has ingrained in
my brain that teachers aren’t only distributing information to children’s minds, but they are also
providing a safe environment that a child can consider their home. Through her, I have learned
that not every child comes from the safe and loving home that I grew up in and I was raised
knowing just how important it is to be kind and compassionate toward others. Being raised in a
way that allowed me to understand the importance of treating others right is all thanks to my
mother. I go to her for help with anything from revising an essay for an English class to just
needing a person to talk to me before I talk myself out of my future plans. My mom is someone
that I will forever look up to and see everything that I strive to be as well as so much more.
Answering the following question is not as easy as I once imagined it would be as a senior in
high school. At such a young age, I envisioned myself knowing exactly what my life would look
like for the next twenty or so years. I didn’t even begin to fathom the possibility of not having a
single clue where my life is headed for sure. I will say however that I do have goals and desires
for what I would like my life to look like in ten years from now. I envision myself being in my sixth
year as a teacher at some school that is hopefully in a small town. As of right now I see myself
having a great amount of student loan debt due to the fact that college is so expensive and
teachers do not have the best salaries. I will most likely be living somewhere in Nebraska that is
either close to York or even in York because of how much I love this community. This
community has taught me the importance of coming together when times are hard and helping
one another out even if you don’t have the same beliefs in some matters. York is a town that I
would like to eventually start a family in because I know that not only will my kids be safe here,
but I will also have numerous community members who are willing to pitch in and help me out if
my family and I find ourselves in a bind. I can also see myself being in a position where I am
constantly giving back to my community in any way that I can. Whether it's volunteering at the
children’s museum or serving on a committee, I know just how important it is to give back to my
community because I have watched how much certain community members give back to me.
