Takt Time: Takt Time Calculation Production Time Available Required Units of Production (Customer Requirement)

Takt time is a measure used in manufacturing to calculate the rate of production needed to meet customer demand. It is calculated by dividing the available production time by the required production units. Implementing takt time helps identify bottlenecks, locate underperforming stations, strip waste from production lines, and instill routines to increase output. However, takt time does not account for machine downtime or quality issues.

TAKT TIME

It is the rate at which you need to complete a

product in order to meet customer demand. It
comes from the German word Takt , meaning
beat or pulse in music. Within manufacturing,
takt is an important measure of output against
demand.

Takt Time Calculation = Production Time Available

Required Units Of Production

( Customer Requirement )
Scheduled Production Time-
▪ Production Time(Work Hour)= Three 8 hours shifts per day
▪ Each shift gets: 30 min. For lunch, two 10 min. Breaks,10 min.
"end of shift" clean up
CALCULATION OF ▪ Each Shift = (8 hrs. x 60 mins.)- 30-20-10=480-60= 420 min/ shift

TAKT TIME-
▪ Total Scheduled Run Time = 3 Shifts x 420 min = 1260 min =
75,600 sec

EXAMPLE
Weekly Customer Requirements-
▪ 6750 parts per week
▪ How many shifts per week do you operate?
▪ 5 days schedule = 1,350 parts per day 6750 /5 = 1,350
▪ 6 days schedule = 1,125 parts per day 6750 /6 = 1,125
▪ Scheduled Run Time = 75,600 sec.
▪ Weekly Customer Requirement = 6,750 parts

CALCULATION OF 5 days schedule = 1,350 parts/day

TAKT TIME-
6 days schedule = 1,125 parts/day
▪ Takt Time

EXAMPLE 5 days schedule = 75,600/ 1,350 = 56 sec.

6 days schedule = 75,600/ 1,125 = 68 sec.
Organizations who implement takt time into their production operations stand to
benefit in a number of ways:
Bottlenecks are quicker to identify as stations slowing the production line can be
easily identified
Faster to locate underperforming stations in a production line

Production lines are stripped of waste as manufacturers focus on value-added work

Takt instills routine functions on the production line, enabling operators to work
faster and produce more output
