“I PLEDGE IN ALL HONESTY THAT I WILL ANSWER THIS PROBLEM SET WITH INTEGRITY. I WILL NOT CHEAT
AND PLAGIARIZE OR DO ANYTHING THAT WILL RUIN THE FAIRNESS OF DOING THIS PROBLEM SET.”
(You may consult anyone for as long as you acknowledge how much percent of the work they were part of.)
General Directions. Use one bond paper per section except E where you may use two. Staple your solutions, together
with a copy of this questionnaire placed on top, and submit on or before, 5:00 pm September 11, 2021 in Berea.
Neatness is 20% of your score. Make sure to submit even one page of your solution to the Edmodo portal that will be

f(x) = { and g(x) = { Find g(1).
3𝑓(𝑥 − 1) 𝑖𝑓 𝑥 ≠ 2 𝑓(𝑥) 𝑖𝑓 𝑥 = 4

2. Given f(x) = and g(x) = . Find
𝑥2 𝑥−1
a. f(g(3))
b) g(f(3))
c) (f o g)(x).
d) What is the domain of the composition in c?

D. (20 pts)
Solve the following problems showing your complete solution.
1. An excursion boat takes 1.6 hours longer to go 36 km up a river than to return. If the rate of the current is 4
kph, what is the rate of the boat in still water?
2. A payroll can be completed in 4 hours by two computers working simultaneously. How many hours are
required for each computer to complete the payroll alone if the older model requires 3 hours longer than the
newer model? Compute answers to two decimal places.
3. In a factory that produces stuffed toys, the employees in the production line are p aid P500 a day if they finish
at most 10 stuffed toys. If they finish more, they are given an additional P100 per toy in excess of 10.
a. Express the amount A earned by a worker as a function of the number of stuffed toys finished in a day.
b. How much will a worker earn if he finishes 15 stuffed toys in a day?
4. A company producing electronics components used in television sets has established that on the average, a
new employee can assemble N(t) components per day after t days of on-the-job training, as given by
50𝑡
N(t) = , t≥0
𝑡+4
Sketch the graph of N, including any vertical or horizontal asymptotes. What does N approach as t → ∞?
5. An experiment on retention is conducted in a psychology class. Each student in the class is given 1 day to
memorize the same list of 40 special characters. The lists are turned in at the end of the day, and for each
succeeding day for 20 days each student is asked to turn in a list of as many of the symbols as can be recalled.
Averages are taken, and it is found that a good approximation of the average number of symbols, N(t),
retained after t days is given by
5𝑡+30
N(t) = , t≥1
𝑡
Sketch the graph of N, including any vertical or horizontal asymptotes. What does N approach as t → ∞?
E. (20 pts) (This portion will also be counted as a take home quiz.)
1. Consider the function f(x) = √𝑥 + 3.
