Transportation Engineering Essay 1

There are three main modes of transport: air, water, and land. Air transport is the fastest but connects only between locations. Water transport moves goods and people over bodies of water via watercraft like ships and boats. Land transport moves people and cargo over land using rail and road. Canoes are simple boats carved from trees while fishing boats evolved to suit local conditions and fisheries. Intermodal transport uses multiple carriers with separate contracts for each leg, while multimodal uses one carrier and contract for door-to-door delivery even if multiple modes are used. Aircraft require air flowing over wings for lift and space for landing, while most also need airport infrastructure for maintenance and loading/unloading. For ships, the hull provides enclosure

CE412 QUIZ 2

1.) Enumerate and explain those three major factors in a specific modes to be
chosen for a particular trip?(10pts.)

There are three types of modes of transport: air transport, water transport,
and land transport. Air transport is one of the fastest modes of public
transport which connects international boundaries. A common type of air
transportation is an airplane. An airplane or aeroplane is a fixed-wing aircraft
that is propelled forward by thrust from a jet engine, propeller, or rocket
engine. Airplanes come in a variety of sizes, shapes, and wing configurations.
Water transport is the process of transport a watercraft, such as a barge, boat,
ship or sailboat, over a body of water, such as a sea, ocean, lake, canal or
river. Land transport is the transport or movement of people, animals or
goods from one location to another location on land. The two main forms of
land transport can be considered to be rail transport and road transport.

2.) Differentiate the two watercraft in a form of Canoe & the Conventional Fishing
Boat that we have?(10pts.)
The oldest boats found by archaeological excavation are dugout canoes
dating back to the Neolithic Period around 7,000-9,000 years ago. These
canoes were often cut from coniferous tree logs, using simple stone tools. A
7000-year-old sea going boat made from reeds and tar has been found in
Kuwait. These early vessels had limited capability; they could float and move
on water, but were not suitable for use any great distance from the shoreline.
They were used mainly for fishing and hunting. The development of fishing
boats took place in parallel with the development of boats built for trade and
war. Traditional fishing boats are usually characteristic of the stretch of coast
along which they operate. They evolve over time to meet the local conditions,
such as the materials available locally for boat building, the type of sea
conditions the boats will encounter, and the demands of the local fisheries.
3.) Differentiate intermodal into multimodal transport?(10pts.)

Both intermodal and multimodal transportation involve moving cargo from

origin to destination using more than one method of transport. This can be
truck, rail, barge, ship, or any combination of those. Both can also mean that
several different carriers operate each leg of the journey. The difference is in
the contract. In multimodal transportation, one contract covers the entire
journey. One carrier takes sole responsibility and ensures door-to-door
delivery is completed, even if other carriers are used in the journey. In
intermodal transportation, there is a separate contract for each individual leg
of the journey. This means that there is more than one responsible entity for
the successful delivery of the cargo.

4.) What are the two necessary things for AIRCRAFT?(10pts.)

Two things necessary for aircraft are air flow over the wings for lift and an area
for landing. The majority of aircraft also need an airport with the infrastructure
to receive maintenance, restocking, refueling and for the loading and
unloading of crew, cargo, and passengers. While the vast majority of aircraft
land and take off on land, some are capable of take-off and landing on ice,
snow, and calm water.

5.) How will you be interpreting this statement "Making the hull a dominant aspect
of its Construction"?(10pts.)

To define the hull, it can be said that it is the watertight enclosure of the ship,
which protects the cargo, machinery, and accommodation spaces of the ship
from the weather, flooding, and structural damage. With this, the hull of a ship
is the most notable structural entity of the ship.
