Types and Example of Research

The document discusses various types of research methods and designs. It defines basic, applied, correlational, descriptive, ethnographic, phenomenological, and action research. It also outlines research design and provides examples of descriptive, correlational, quasi-experimental, and experimental research designs. Quantitative and qualitative research methodologies are briefly defined. Finally, case studies are defined as an in-depth examination of a single subject through various data sources.

CONDUCTING RESEARCH STUDY

What is the problem

What data to collect
Who to collect it from
How to collect it
How to analyze it
Types and Example of
Research
TYPES OF RESEARCH
BASIC RESEARCH
APPLIED RESEARCH
CORRELATIONAL RESEARCH
DESCRIPTIVE RESEARCH
ETHNOGRAPHIC RESEARCH
PHENOMENOLOGICAL RESEARCH
ACTION RESEARCH
BASIC RESEARCH
BASIC RESEARCH, ALSO REFERRED TO AS
FUNDAMENTAL OR PURE RESEARCH, IS DRIVEN BY
A SCIENTIST’S CURIOSITY OR INTEREST IN A
SCIENTIFIC QUESTION.
APPLIED RESEARCH
APPLIED RESEARCH IS DESIGNED TO SOLVE
PRACTICAL PROBLEMS OF THE MODERN WORLD,
RATHER THAN TO ACQUIRE KNOWLEDGE FOR
KNOWLEDGE’S SAKE; ITS GOAL IS TO IMPROVE
HUMAN CONDITION
CORRELATIONAL RESEARCH
CORRELATIONAL RESEARCH REFERS TO THE
SYSTEMATIC INVESTIGATION OR STATISTICAL
STUDY OF RELATIONSHIPS AMONG TWO OR MORE
VARIABLES, WITHOUT NECESSARILY DETERMINING
CAUSE AND EFFECT.
DESCRIPTIVE RESEARCH
DESCRIPTIVE RESEARCH REFERS TO RESEARCH
THAT PROVIDES AN ACCURATE PORTRAYAL OF A
CLASS OR A PARTICULAR INDIVIDUAL SITUATION
OR GROUP.
ETHNOGRAPHIC RESEARCH
ETHNOGRAPHIC RESEARCH REFERS TO THE
INVESTIGATION OF A CULTURE THROUGH AN IN-
DEPTH STUDY OF THE MEMBERS OF THE CULTURE;
IT INVOLVES THE SYSTEMATIC COLLECTION,
DESCRIPTION, AND ANALYSIS OF DATA FOR
DEVELOPMENT OF THEORIES OF CULTURAL
BEHAVIOR.
PHENOMENOLOGICAL RESEARCH
PHENOMENOLOGICAL RESEARCH IS AN INDUCTIVE
DESCRIPTIVE RESEARCH DEVELOPED FROM
PHENOMENOLOGICAL PHILOSOPHY.
ACTION RESEARCH
ACTION RESEARCH INVOLVES THE APPLICATION
OF THE STEPS OF THE SCIENTIFIC METHOD IN THE
CLASSROOM PROBLEMS.
RESEARCH DESIGN
RESEARCH DESIGN
THE RESEARCH DESIGN REFERS TO THE OVERALL
STRATEGY THAT YOU CHOOSE TO INTEGRATE THE
DIFFERENT COMPONENTS OF THE STUDY IN A
COHERENT AND LOGICAL WAY, THEREBY,
ENSURING YOU WILL EFFECTIVELY ADDRESS THE
RESEARCH PROBLEM; IT CONSTITUTES THE
BLUEPRINT FOR THE COLLECTION, MEASUREMENT,
AND ANALYSIS OF DATA. ( DE VAUS, D. 2006 )
EXAMPLES OF RESEARCH DESIGN
Descriptive Research Design
Correlational Research Design
Quasi-Experimental Research Design
Experimental Research Design
DESCRIPTIVE RESEARCH DESIGN
SEEKS TO DESCRIBE THE CURRENT STATUS OF AN
IDENTIFIED VARIABLE. THESE RESEARCH PROJECTS ARE
DESIGNED TO PROVIDE SYSTEMATIC INFORMATION
ABOUT A PHENOMENON.
CORRELATIONAL RESEARCH DESIGN
ATTEMPTS TO DETERMINE THE EXTENT OF A
RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN TWO OR MORE
VARIABLES USING STATISTICAL DATA. IN THIS TYPE OF
DESIGN, RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN AND
AMONG A NUMBER OF FACTS ARE SOUGHT AND
INTERPRETED.
QUASI-EXPERIMENTAL RESEARCH DESIGN
ATTEMPTS TO ESTABLISH CAUSE-EFFECT
RELATIONSHIPS AMONG THE VARIABLES. THESE
TYPES OF DESIGN ARE VERY SIMILAR TO TRUE
EXPERIMENTS, BUT WITH SOME KEY
DIFFERENCES.
EXPERIMENTAL RESEARCH DESIGN
OFTEN CALLED TRUE EXPERIMENTATION,
USES THE SCIENTIFIC METHOD TO
ESTABLISH THE CAUSE-EFFECT
RELATIONSHIP AMONG A GROUP OF
VARIABLES THAT MAKE UP A STUDY
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
Quantitative Research Methodology

Qualitative Research Methodology

QUANTITATIVE QUALITATIVE
data are used when a data describes qualities or
researcher is trying to quantify characteristics. It is collected
a problem, or address the "what" using questionnaires,
or "how many" aspects of a interviews, or observation, and
research question. frequently appears in narrative
form.
Case Study
A case study is described as an intensive,
systematic investigation of a single
individual, group, community or some other
unit in which the researcher examines in-
depth data relating to several variables.
