AIRCRAFT INTEGRATED DATA

SYSTEM (AIDS) OVERVIEW
AIDS is organized around the Data Management Unit or DMU
(1TV) which interfaces with other aircraft systems. Approximately
13,000 parameters from the 50 ARINC 429 data buses are fed into
the DMU.
Based on these parameters, the DMU performs several tasks, the
result of which can be either accessed through the MCDU screen or
through ACARS downloaded reports.
While the CFDS is intended to a ssist line maintenance in isolating
faults detected by the BITE functi ons of the individual aircraft sys-
tems, the main objec tives for AIDS are more of a preventative na-
ture.
Long term trend monitoring of the en gines and the APU avoid ex-
pensive unscheduled maintenance actions. Continuous monitoring
of the engines and the APU is also intended to substitute fixed in-
terval inspections for on demand maintenance.
In addition, AIDS is used for various tasks like hard landing detec-
tion, crew proficiency monitoring, and any type of special investiga-
tions and trouble shooting on a system level.
The intent of this bo oklet is to sho w the technician how to access
system data through the MCDU by either a alpha lab el call-up or a
parameter label call-up. Basic system parameters can be accessed
by alpha call-ups. When an alpha call-up is not available, the pa-
rameter label call-up will allow the necessary date to be accessed.

PRINTING ALPHA CALL-UP PARAMETERS

Any parameters that are displayed on the MCDU screen can be
printed by selecting the “PRINT” function through LSK 6R. If there
is more than one page of parameters entered, the report will print
the contents of all the parameters.

ACCESSING PARAMETER LABEL

CALL-UP PARAMETERS
On the MCDU display:
 Select the MCDU MENU Key.
 Select the line key adjacent to "AIDS". The AIDS menu is dis-
played.
 Select the line key adjacent to "< CALL-UP PARM". The "AIDS
PARAM CALL-UP" menu is displayed.
 Select the line key adjacent to "< PARAM LABEL CALL-UP".
The "AIDS PAR LAB CALL-UP" menu is displayed.
 Enter the correct Parameter Label Call-up into the scratchpad
on the MCDU using the following format: EQ/SYS/LAB/SDI/
and optional /DATABITS. The Parameter Label Call-Up ap-
pears at the bottom of the display (scratchpad).
Example: The Parameter Label Call-Up for APU hours is not accu-
rate unless the databits /14 is added to the end of the la-
bel. The complete label would be 7A/1/132/01/14.
 Select the 1L or 4L key to display system data. The Parameter
Label Call-Up is displayed on the related data line.
NOTE: Two Label Call-up parameters can be displayed at one time
on a MCDU screen. Eight pages of parameter label call-ups
can be entered.
 To exit AIDS, select the MCDU MENU key on the MCDU. The
Main Menu appears on the MCDU display.

Menu Definitions:
 EQ = The ARINC 429 equipment identification is a two digit
character.
 SYS = The system number is a one character entry
(1-4).
 LAB = The ARINC 429 label is a three digit character entry.
Valid entries are 000-377.
 SDI = Source Destination Identifier entries are 00, 01, 10, 11
and „XX‟. „XX‟ represents a case in which the DMU samples
the parameter without looking at the SDI field.
 DATABITS = Identifies which ARINC 429 bits to extract from
the label call-up parameter and display as decimal
 VALIDITY
Validity of the requested parameter:
“>” parameter has not been transmitted/updated.
“Blank” parameter has been updated.
 SSM = The Sign Status Matrix is taken from bits 31-29 of the
parameter and is displayed in binary form.

22

 DECIMAL VALUE = Decimal value of the parameter calculated

using the “DATABITS” entry to specify the number of bits to use
as data. For example, a “DATABITS” entry of 12 results in the
decimal display of bits 28-17. A “DATABITS” entry of 20 would
result in a decimal display of bits 28-09. If bit 29=0, the
“DATABITS” value will be preceded with a negative sign (-).
 Binary Data = Binary data (bits 28-11) of the parameter are dis-
played on the line below the label “DATABITS 28-11”.

PARAMETER LABEL CALL-UPS EXPLANATION

There are usually two types of label call-ups that will be performed.
One is looking at bit position in a string of databits to determine if it
is a 1 or 0 such as determining whether the APU bleed valve is
open or closed. Another type of call-up will be performed to acquire
a range of databits to produce a decimal value such as the total
hours on the APU.
NOTE: It is necessary to have the equipment number of the system
that is being accessed. The equipment number is usually at
the top of the parameter lists found in the maintenance man-
ual. The parameter lists are organized according to the con-
nected ARINC 429 data buses.
The table on page 28 can be used to find the equipment number of
the system to be accessed and the relevant ATA of where to find
the systems associated label call-up parameter lists.
The following two examples will show the parameter label call-up
lists for the Electronic Control Box (ECB) of the APU. In this exam-
ple, the parameter lists are located in 49-61-00. The parameter lists
are organized according to the connected ARINC 429 data buses.
In the first example, the ECB is being accessed to find out the posi-
tion of the APU bleed valve by looking at the status of bit 12 by
requesting the label call-up 7A/1/037/01.
In the second example, the ECB is being accessed to find out the
total operating hours on the APU. The first 14 databits is used on
label call-up 7A/1/132/01/14 to give the decimal value of 36. There
is 36 hours on the APU. In this example, the optional databits field
was used by adding /14 to the end of the label call-up.
NOTE: If the databits field is not entered, the value obtained from
the call-up will be incorrect.

LABEL CALL-UP TO DETERMINE BIT POSITION

The following example shows a parameter label call-up

to determine if the APU bleed valve is closed. The bit
status of position number 12 is 0. Using the chart from
the AMM, we can see that the APU bleed valve is not

LABEL CALL-UP TO DETERMINE DECIMAL VALUE

The following example shows a parameter label call-up

to find the total operating hours on the APU. In this par-
ticular case, a range of databits must be specifed to ob-
tain a decimal number value of 36 hours. If a the databit
range is not entered, the value obtained will be incor-
rect.
The label call-up parameters are found in a systems re-
spective ATA chapter. In this particular case, ATA 49-61
-00 would be used to find the parameter lists for the
Electronic Control Box of the APU.
