Responsible Use of Media and Information

Background Information for Learners

Media and information literacy are very essential for lifelong learning, especially in socializing and
becoming more active citizen but, as a user, we must responsible for it, so that we will enjoy Media and
Information benefits. Although Media and Information provides us advantages, we cannot assure that it has
no disadvantage therefore, we must be preparing for it and it is becoming responsible user of Media and
Information.

What is Media and Information?

Media are the communication outlets or tools used to store and deliver information or data. The
term refers to components of the mass media communications industry, such as print media, publishing,
the news media, photography, cinema, broadcasting (radio and television), and advertising.
Information is knowledge communicated or received concerning a particular fact or circumstancee.
Information is knowledge gained through study, communication, research, instruction.
The characteristic of a responsible user of media and information:
1. As a user apply the Netiquette, the internet etiquette or the code of behavior of using an internet.
 Avoid posting offensive comments online.
 Don’t share or post photo's, videos of other person without permission.
 Never send a spam email
 If you are an online gamer, respect other whether you win or lose.

  Do not nag or annoy people in web forums or website comment.
 If you are commenting on post online such as YouTube and Facebook comments stick to the
topic.
 Never use an offensive language
 Avoid replying to negative comments, instead break the cycle with a positive post.
 If someone ask a question, answer it. Offer a help if there is someone needs it.
 Be thankful to someone who helped you online.
2. Remember that we are human and we should handle media information rationally and good purpose.
3. Respect other's time and bandwidth.
4. We should share expert knowledge, not just sharing nonsense media information.
5. Do not abuse our power in handling media information. Make sure its beneficial to others and
knowledgeable. Since having the power comes a great responsibility.

What is Fake News?

Where Does Fake News Come From?

Fake news is not new, what is new is how easy to share information – both true and false – on a
massive scale. Social media platforms allow almost anyone to publish their thoughts or share stories to the
world. The problem is, most people don't check the source of the material that they view online before they
share it, which can lead to fake news spreading quickly. But, not all fake news stories are found online.
Gossip in a workplace or in the community, also guilty of spreading misinformation even if inadvertently
are example of fake news.

The Impact of Fake News in the Workplace

Fake news can affect behavior. It encourages people to invent excuses, to dismiss others' ideas, to
exaggerate the truth, and to spread rumors. Misinformation and fake news can also harm your business.
Invented reviews of your products or inaccurate financial updates, for example, can do serious reputational
damage.

Six Ways to Spot Fake New

1. Develop a Critical Mindset. One of the main reasons fake news is such a big issue is that it is often
believable and also written to create "shock value," that is, a strong instinctive reaction such as fear

 or anger. It is important that you keep your emotional response to such stories in check. Instead,
approach what you see and hear rationally and critically.
2. Check the Source. Check the web address for the page you're reading. Spelling errors in company
names, or strange-sounding extensions like ".info net" and “. offer," rather than ".com" or “. co.uk,"
may mean that the source is suspect. Trusted online fact-checking sites like Snopes can help you to
verify stories that sound too good to be true.
3. See Who Else Is Reporting the Story. Has anyone else picked up on the story? What do other
sources say about it? Professional global news agencies such as Reuters, CNN and the BBC have
rigorous editorial guidelines and extensive networks of highly trained reporters, so are a good place
to start.
4. Examine the Evidence. A credible news story will include plenty of facts – quotes from experts,
survey data and official statistics, for example. Or detailed, consistent and corroborated eye-witness
accounts from people on the scene. If these are missing, question it!
5. Don't Take Images at Face Value. Modern editing software has made it easy for people to create
fake images that look real. In fact, research shows that only half of us can tell when images are fake.
Google Reverse Image Search is one of the tools use to check where an image originated and
whether it has been altered.
6. Check That it "Sounds Right"
7. Finally, use your common sense! Bear in mind that fake news is designed to "feed" your biases,
hopes or fears.
