Lesson 2: The Tools Needed in Critical/Creative Reports

LEARNING TASK #1: LET’S EXPLORE YOUR MIND!

Directions: Answer the following questions as precisely yet as thoroughly
as possible.

1. Why is public speaking a performance?

● Public speaking is a performance because there is only
one time, in one place, with one audience that that speech
will be made. It could be brilliant . It could be disastrous.
(When the speech is made again, the same comments will
be made again).

2. Is a good public speaker born, not made? Or is it a mixture of both?

Explain your answer.
● Great public speakers aren't just born that way, they work
at it. While natural talent and confidence can play a big
part, so much more goes into being a great public speaker.

3. As an audience member, what affects you the most when it comes to

the effectiveness of a speech? What qualities of the speaker give the
greatest impression to you?
● The most important points for a member of the audience is
to have been able to hear clearly and understand the talk
and to have found it educational and interesting.If you
cannot hear and understand the speaker, then whatever
they say and however good is going to be lost to you.

4. Do you want to be a good public speaker? Why or why not?

 ● I am a good public speaker. I can teach, engage, inform,
amuse and inspire audiences. I know this because I have
done all these. I am passionate about improving my skills. I
care about what the audience needs as opposed to what I
want to say.I am willing to share my knowledge and offer
support to others who want to become good speakers. I
know that the most important element of good speech is
passion: passion for the topic, passion for the listeners.

5. What public speaking practices do you think should be practiced

more in your school or in your class? Why?
● Observe other speakers:Take the time to watch other
speakers who are good at what they do. Practice imitating
their style and confidence. Organize your talk: Every
speech should have an introduction, a body, and a
conclusion. Structure your talk so that the other students
know what to expect.

6. Why is it important to match one’s appearance to one’s audience?

● It is important and advisable to match your appearance
when you talk and engage with your audience because it
can make you look professional and neat. And it won't take
much attention.

7. When are visual aids effective when people give speeches and
reports?
● When you are giving a speech, you ideally want the
audience to pay complete attention to your voice and
message. A visual aid is an invitation for them to pay
attention to something else, if even for a moment.
Therefore, this visual aid must reinforce your message.

● Communication style, a way in which they interact and
exchange information with others. The famous person I know
is Ellen DeGeneres.

How?
● Yes, definitely. Slow down while speaking, don't forget to
breathe, stand properly or be in a proper posture, avoid
shouting or yelling, drink water if needed.

LEARNING TASK #2: REFLECTIONS ON SPEAKING STYLE

Directions: Answer the following questions as precisely yet as thoroughly
as possible.

1. How would you describe your speaking style? Can you think of any
famous person who has the same speaking style? What can you
learn from that person?
● There are four basic communication styles: passive,
aggressive, passive-aggressive and assertive. It's
important to understand each communication style, and
why individuals use them. It is the famous Ellen
DeGeneres. So here it is, what I have learned from Ellen
DeGeneres, laugh as much as possible, dance everyday,
be yourself, it is okay to act like a fool as long as you are
having fun doing it, confidence is key and be kind to one
another.

2. How can you improve your speaking style?

 ● You can improve your speaking style through practicing it
everyday.You should learn how to improve your speaking
style.
● Cut out the filler. Cut out filler words like “um” or “ah,” which
might distract from your message.
● Speak slowly and enunciate.
● Speak more slowly than you would in normal conversation to
ensure your words are heard clearly.
● Pause.
● Use the correct tone of voice.

3. What kind of speaker would you like to become, and why?

● Public Speaker, wherein I can improve my self confidence
in facing the public with that I can avoid having stage
fright.

LEARNING TASK #5: PREPARING FOR THE INFORMATIVE REPORT

1. You will give an informative report.

2. The topic should be something you are interested in. Come up
with three topics, and pick the most appropriate or interesting topic
 for you to report on (Choose any informative topic which suits
the current situation of our country).
3. When researching for one’s report, it is not enough to report on
what one already knows. It is important to find about the topic, and
that is probably one of the chief distinctions between an academic
report and a non-academic report. For academic reports, one must
know the literature surrounding one’s subject, so when one
reports, the details come from a broad spectrum of knowledge
instead of just speaking from one subjective experience or
regurgitating what may be found in one’s echo chamber (as found
in one’s Facebook newsfeed).
4. According to the University of Adelaide, “Choosing good sources
means paying attention to who wrote the information, why and how
they wrote it,” and they provide a checklist to help students gauge
whether their print sources are credible or not. It might be helpful
to pay a visit to their website to get a more thorough appreciation
of what one should watch out for.
5. When it comes to choosing between print sources and Internet
sources, it is good to remember what the Purdue Online Writing

FINAL TASK: PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER IN A SPEECH

1. Make sure that all the preparations made in this lesson are
incorporated in the report, such as using good visual aids,
preparing and delivering a report with a PowerPoint presentation
effectively, and paying attention to one’s audience.
2. When read aloud, the report should last from five to ten minutes.
3. For each paragraph, place the keywords or phrases in one index
card that should help you remember what you wrote.
4. Be conscious of your voice. Ensure that it is loud enough to reach
the whole room.
5. Be conscious of your posture. Do not slouch or look at the floor.
6. Be conscious of your hand gestures. Strive for a happy balance of
meaningful hand gestures and poise.
 7. Be conscious of your body language. Avoid crossing your arms too
much or inching toward the back of the room. Try to be more open
with your gestures.
8. Be conscious of your eye contact. Try to make eye contact with at
least three people you feel comfortable with in different parts of the
room.
9. Your report will be graded using the Rubric in Public Speaking
Activity embedded in the fourth lesson.
