Abstract

Facebook is a social media that is widely used by people today. Facebook is also currently very
useful for teachers in student learning, especially through Facebook groups. Facebook groups
provide many benefits and strategies in the student learning process, especially in writing short
sentences. If the teacher chooses to use Facebook, then the teacher needs to know whether the
Facebook group can support the teacher in guiding students to write short sentences. This
article will discuss using Facebook groups to guide students in writing sentences. This data is
based on the results of reading journals and books that discuss Facebook media to find out
whether Facebook groups can be used to guide students in writing effectively.

Background

Writing skills are one that every student who learns languages, especially English, must
have. Through good mastery of writing skills, students can communicate their ideas in writing
with the help of the media. Mastery of good writing skills really helps students in writing short
sentences in a day. However, the students' ability in writing is said to be still very low because
there are several problems in writing, such as spelling, punctuation, and structure. To overcome
this problem, a strategy that is able to build students in writing is needed. This strategy is also
expected to be able to practice student writing skills. One interesting strategy for students to use
in writing is Facebook. This media is expected to be able to improve students' writing skills.
Currently, there are many types of social media applications used, one of which is Facebook, the
use of Facebook is not only for communication purposes or for status updates, but Facebook has
also been widely used in education.

Prescott (2014) states that Facebook can be used as a medium for interaction between
students and teachers, for example conducting discussions in the Facebook group, as well as
being a useful tool for students such as communicating with their friends as well as sharing
information about the problems they experience. Teachers who use Facebook groups in teaching
get more positives than negatives. There are several things in using the Facebook group as a
medium for language learning, especially to improve students' writing skills. The first is that
most students have used Facebook, the second Facebook group allows students to iterate, for
example giving comments to people in the group.
