The document discusses the objectives of a pilot limestone contactor plant study which is to determine the cost, performance and feasibility of using limestone contactors for water stabilization. The suitability depends on raw water characteristics and design/operating variables which are determined through piloting.

The objective of a pilot limestone contactor plant study is to determine whether it is
suitable as a stabilization treatment by assessing the cost, performance and feasibility of the process. The suitability of the limestone contactor is mainly dependent on raw water characteristics such as pH, alkalinity and temperature. These along with using correct choices of design and operating variables will determine the success of a limestone contactor operation. These variables are determined from pilot study.
Engineering Design Variables:
1. Media size 2. Chemical constituents / purity of media 3. Filtration rate 4. Maximum flow rate 5. Contact time 6. Limestone bed depth 7. Recharge level 8. Location in the treatment train
Operating Variables: 1. Filter backwashing frequency 2. Limestone media recharge frequency 3. Period before total media replacement is needed 4. Seasonal treatment performance
