PART I.

1. Explain the veracity of this statement (5 pts)

“ If you do not know where you’re going, any road will take you there.”

In a business, there are so many directions one can go in order to thrive. They can either
enter an already thriving business, restart a dead market, innovate new things and
introduce it to the global market. There are options for a starting business to go to, same
with life. You must think of a goal for you to focus and direction and see if it succeeds on
your endeavor and you can choose other. There is endless possibilities.

2. Planning is often called the primary management function because it establishes the basis
for all the other functions that managers and leaders perform. AGREE OR DISAGREE.
Support your answer with explanation. (5 pts)
I AGREE with this statement. Planning is a necessary step to establish a specific direction in
which a company could follow. It sets a precedent on the decision-making of the company
because in planning, it establishes goals and sets up a structure that will determined the success
and failure of the company. It requires people with the ability to analyze everything, judge and
communicate what they saw and plan everything so that it is orderly constructed and
established.

3. An organizational structure is the organizational formal framework by which job tasks

are divided , grouped, and coordinated. When managers/leaders develop or change an
organizational structure , they are engaged in organizational design. Instruction : Develop
a simple organizational structure for Company Fruits . It has the following work force:
one manager, one assistant manager, and two supervisors. Each supervisor is tasked in
overseeing five workers (non-managerial). (20 pts)
Manager

Assistant
Manager

Supervisor Supervisor
1 2
The manager is the top on the chart since he is handling the managerial duties and the
assistant manager is the one who assist the top manager in handling the duties. The
supervisors are the lowest on the chart since they only received instructions from the top
managers and relay it to their workers.

PART II

Analyzing the external and internal environment of the organization

CASE 1 – Vehicle indusrty

Wealth can be quickly made and lost in the small passenger vehicle industry in the
Philippines. Competitors range from garage shop operations to the Philippines’ largest
corporations such as Palmeras Motors, Javier Motors, and Flores Motors. As one of the
country’s most profitable firms, Palmeras became interested in small vehicles when
businesses started to rapidly adopt midget tri-wheel or small 4-wheel vehicles designed for
many small and congested roads in the country, thus reducing the demand for the larger
vehicles which Palmeras historically dominated. Although the midget passenger jeepney
market grew rapidly in the late 1970’s, Palmeras did not enter until 1981. Prior to that time,
the market had been dominated by small and nimble competitors, such as Flores Motors. (5
pts each)

1. From Palmeras’ perspective, the displacement of wide-body vehicle by midget

vehicle in the late 1970’s was:
a. A strength.
b. A weakness.
c. An opportunity
Their dominance in the motor industry either small or large vehicles
could be used in entering a potential thriving industry where small
vehicles were reliable and cheaper acquiring them unlike larger and
much more complicated large vehicles.
d. A threat.

2. From Palmeras’ perspective, their large cash reserves relative to the smaller
vehicle producers would be considered:
a. A strength
Their large cash reserves is a strength because they can use it to invest
in research and development, production of resources, and acquiring
human resources to produce vehicles. They have the funds to support a
thriving small vehicle business.
b. A weakness.
c. An opportunity.
d. A threat

3. From Palmeras’ perspective, their large bureaucratic organizational structure

and complex decision -making procedures relative to the entrepreneurial small
firms in small vehicles would be considered:
a. A strength.
b. A weakness.
Their complex decision- making process could either backfire or led to
growth because of their larger organizational structure which means
that there might be some conflicts in perspectives and confusion in
objectives and goals that small firms might have no problem with.
c. An opportunity.
d. A threat.

4. From Flores perspective, the entry of Palmeras into the smaller vehicles
production would be considered:
a. A strength.
b. A weakness.
c. An opportunity.
d. A threat
The entry of a large firm and a proven company into the small vehicle
business could posed a threat to companies such as Flores who had thrived in
the market. Their expertise in the motor industry could be a key advantage
against the small companies.
