... In [28] , a UM speed control system, employing a PWM AC chopper (Fig. 16), is described and simulated,
analyzing different figures of merit: mains power factor, motor speed and current, for different load
conditions; moreover, a harmonic analysis of the motor current and voltage are performed. Fig. 17 shows
that the harmonic line current components reduce if compared with a phase control technique (like in fig. ...

The universal motor: A classic machine with evergreen challenges in design and modeling
... As universal motor is widely used in home appliances so the controllers are designed to operate on ac
voltage [4]. SP-PWM inverter -fed drive is common technique that is used to adjust the voltage applied to
motor [5] . With PWM inverter-fed drive harmonics are generated because of application of power electronic
devices used in the circuitry. ...
... So variation of modulation index is analyzed [6]. With the application of single phase PWM inverter-fed
drive the iron loss in electric sheets of stator and rotor can be reduced significantly [5] . The increased
awareness of harmonics in recent years is the result of concerns that harmonic distortion levels are
increasing on many electrical power systems [7], however, this is the hot research direction now-a-days, the
emphasis is on the cost effective exploitation regarding power quality and reliability [8]. ...
... gle-phase, and three-phase systems are proposed for buck, boost and buck-boost types. The advantages
of their proposed topologies for AC choppers include increased power factor, low harmonic input current, fast
dynamics, high efficiency and high reliability. They have compared their results with the phase-controlled AC
controller using thyristors. Bodur et. al. (2000) have carried out research on universal motor speed control
with current controlled PWM AC chopper using a microcontroller. The proposed method proved that the
universal motor speed control system has stable control in a wide range of speeds, and also found that the
motor shows good response to sudden load changes, which is suitable for ...

... Speed control techniques of universal motor have remained interest area for researchers. Several PWM
techniques are used to produce variable frequency and voltage source (Bodur, et. al. 2000) . Universal
motor when supplied with Variable Frequency Drives (VFD), produces harmonic distortions in the system.
Harmonic distortions in motors also cause temperature rise and affects their normal operation. Significant
improvements can be achieved by using PWM controlled Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor (IGBT) convertor,
which decrea ...

... So, the speed drive systems draw the attention of many researchers and industrials. In these systems, the
three phase induction motors (IM) operating at variable speed can be powered by AC/DC/AC converters [1]
[2] [3] . For such dual power supplies, diode rectifiers( AC/DC) are widely employed in industrial fields and
consumer products thanks to advantages of low cost, simple structure, robustness and absence of control.

... In the inverters, in order to control the load current, HBCC among the various PWM techniques is widely
used because of its inherent simplicity and fast dynamic response [7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14]. In [15, 16] , the
AC load current is controlled by using HBCC in the single phase AC chopper. ...
A novel hysteresis band current controller scheme for three phase AC chopper
... A four-quadrant high-frequency AC chopper operation is given in [8] where chopper feeds an
inductorcapacitor load. In another application, PWM AC chopper is used to control the speed of a universal
motor [9] and a single-phase induction motor [10] at a switching frequency of 1.8kHz. ...
