Dca20072 Practical - Levelling

This document outlines a practical lab assignment on contouring for a diploma program in architecture. The objectives are to conduct fieldwork according to standard procedures for long sections and cross sections, and produce a report. The fieldwork involves using a level and staff to take elevation readings at stations in a grid pattern to determine contours. Students will calculate and plot the results, and write a report covering the introduction, objectives, instruments, procedures, observations, data adjustment and conclusion. Performance will be assessed based on multiple criteria.

THEORY

Levelling is involved with the use of a (usually) optical level to determine elevations. We do
this by starting from a point of known elevation (a benchmark), and proceeding to calculate
differences in elevation, until we get to another point of known elevation (often the original
benchmark). We can then calculate whether any errors (miss closure) exists in our measurements. If
the miss closure is small, we can distribute the error over all our measurements.

2. TRIPOD 4. WOODEN PEG

6. ARROW SURVEY

******REMINDER :
DAMAGE AND LOSS OF THE EQUIPMENT IS STUDENT RESPONSIBILITY.
1. Never place the instrument in its case when wet.
2. Check the accuracy each time before using the instrument, as we cannot assume any
responsibility for ANY errors and DAMAGED.
3. Follow the instructions for handling the batteries.
4. Treat the instrument with care.
Field Work : Contour using grid method
OBJECTIVE :

- Conduct the field work according to the requirement

- Follow the standard procedure in long section and cross section,
- Accomplish the task within a time line
- Calculate and plotting
- Produce the report.

2. Set-up a level at point of station 1 and perform temporary adjustment .(Refer Figure 8)
3. Set-up staff on BM/TBM as back sight (BS) and at point a1 until point c2 as intermediate sight
(IS). c3 as a Fore sight (FS). Take and record the reading.

4. After that, move a level to station 2 and set-up it. Make sure the staff is still at point c3 as a back
sight (BS) and the other staff move to point d1 until point e3 as a intermediate sight (IS). Take and
record the reading.

5. Close at BM/TBM (started point) as a fore sight.

6. During the process, make sure the bubble of staff and a level always centre.

7. Then, determine the adjustment reduced level.

8. Calculate and plotting the result use the interpolation method.
