Waves For Communication P5

Visible light, radio waves, microwaves, and infrared waves are used for communication. Optical fibers use infrared and visible light to transmit information through total internal reflection. Radio waves are used for television and radio communication by transmitting from an antenna and receiving at another antenna. Microwaves are used to transmit signals to satellites due to less atmospheric interference than longer wavelengths and can carry more data than radio waves. Mobile phones use microwaves to communicate between handsets and base stations.

Waves for Communication P5

The only waves in the electromagnetic spectrum that are used for
communication are visible waves, radio waves, micro waves and infra-red.

Optical Fibre Communication

Infra-red and Visible light are used to send information through optical
fibres. These waves can only travel in straight lines but optical fibres
are bendy and will need to bend around corners. So, inside the optical
fibres the waves reflect off the sides of the cables completely. This is
called total internal reflection.

Light wave

Radio waves

Normal (terrestrial) TV and radios use radio waves to communicate.

They can send information over long distances. The radio waves are
emitted by a radio or television transmitting aerial and picked up by a
receiving aerial . The waves reach an aerial… on the radio or television.

Microwaves

Microwaves pass through the Earth’s

atmosphere with less interference than
longer wavelengths so they are used to
carry signals to satellites orbiting the
Earth. They can carry much more data
and information that radio waves too.

Mobile phones use microwaves to

communicate. When you make a phone
call your phone transmits to the
nearest base stations at one
frequency When the signal reaches a
base station it is transmitted to the
main telephone network, either by
telephone call or by another radio link
at a different frequency The signal is
then sent to the mobile phone you are
calling by their nearest station. Incoming and outgoing signals from the
same phone have different frequency so they don’t interfere with each
other. Base stations continuously transmit microwaves to handsets.
Handsets only transmit microwaves when a call is happening.
