Step 1: Determine The Midpoint For Each Interval

This document summarizes data on instructor length of service by calculating the mean, median, and mode. It contains two sets of data. For the first set, the mean is 12.75, median is 11.1, and mode is 7.74. For the second set on kilometers travelled, the mean is 53, median is 50.75, and mode is 47.17. The document shows the calculations for each measure of central tendency.

Find Mean: Mean: Σ mf / N N = 120

where:

m: The midpoint of the ith group

f: The frequency of the ith group

N: The total sample size

Step 1: Determine the midpoint for each interval.

For 0 to 4, the midpoint is 2.

For 5 to 9, the midpoint is 7.

For 10 to 14, the midpoint is 12.

For 15 to19, the midpoint is 17.

For 20 to 24, the midpoint is 22.

For 25 to 29, the midpoint is 27.

For 30 to 34, the midpoint is 32.

Note: The midpoint for each group can be found by taking the average of the lower and upper value in
the range. For example, the midpoint for the first group is calculated as: (0+4) / 2 = 2.

Step 2: Multiply each midpoint by the frequency for the class.

For 0 to 4, (15)(2) = 30

For 5 to 9, (37)(7) = 259

For 10 to 14, (25)(12) = 300

For 15 to19, (18)(17) = 306

For 20 to 24, (13)(22) = 286

For 25 to 29, (7)(27) = 189

For 30 to 34, (5)(32) = 160

Step 3: Add the results from Step 2 and divide the sum by 120

Mean = (160 + 189 + 286 + 306 + 300 + 259 + 30) / 120 = 12.75

Find Median: In the table N/2=120/2=60. Here, 10-14 is the class whose cumulative frequency is 77
which is greater than 60.

Where: Median = l + [N/2 – F/ f] x i

l = lower limit of the median class

f = frequency of the median class

F = cumulative frequency of the class preceding the median class

N = total number of observations

i = width of the median class

l = 9.5, N = 120, F = 52, f = 25, i = 5

Median = 9.5 + [120/2 – 52] / 25 x 5

= 9.5 + [(120 – 104 / 2)/25] x 5

= 9.5 + 0.32 x 5

= 9.5 + 1.6

Median = 11.1

Find Mode: Mode= l + [fm−f1 / (fm−f1) + (fm−f2)] x i

where l = lower limit of the modal class

fm = frequency of the modal class

f1= frequency of class preceding the modal class

f2 = frequency of class succeeding the modal class

i = width of the modal class

Here, the maximum frequency is 37 and the corresponding class is 5 - 9. So, 5 - 9 is the modal class such
that l=4.5, i=5, fm=37, f1=15 and f2=25.

Mode = 4.5 + [37 – 15 / (37 – 15) + (37 – 25)] x 5

= 4.5 + [22 / 34] x 5

= 4.5 + 3.24

Mode = 7.74
Therefore, the mean, median and mode of this group data are mean = 12.75, median = 11.1 and mode =
7.74

45 – 49 11 47 517 19
40 – 44 3 42 126 8
35 – 39 5 37 185 5

Find mean:

Σ mf / N N = 40

Mean: (144 + 469 + 186 + 285 + 208 + 517 + 126 + 185) / 40 = 53

Find Median:

Find Median: In the table N/2= 40/2= 20. Here, 50-54 is the class whose cumulative frequency is 23
which is greater than 20.

Median = l + [N/2 – F/ f] x i

l = 49.5, N = 40, F = 19, f = 4, i = 5

Median = 49.5 + [(40/2 – 19) / 4] x 5

= 49.5 + [1 / 4] x 5

= 49.5 + 0.25 x 5

= 49.5 + 1.25

Median = 50.75

Find Mode:

Here, the maximum frequency is 11 and the corresponding class is 45 - 49. So, 45 - 49 is the modal class
such that l=44.5, i=5, fm=11, f1=3 and f2=4.

Mode= l + [fm−f1 / (fm−f1) + (fm−f2)] x i

Mode = 44.5 + [11 – 3 / (11 – 3) + (11 – 4)] x 5

= 44.5 + [8 / 15] x 5
= 44.5 + 2.67

Mode = 47.17

Therefore, the mean, median and mode of this group data are mean = 53, median = 50.75 and mode =
47.17
