Department of Education: Republic of The Philippines

(1) The document is a performance task from a Grade 10 Mathematics class in the Philippines that involves calculating costs for manufacturing honeycomb tables. (2) Students are asked to calculate (a) the cost of manufacturing the honeycomb core for a single 15-foot diameter table, (b) the total cost for 80 such tables, and (c) the final total cost including sales tax and shipping fees. (3) The task provides context as an engineering problem and evaluates students on showing their mathematical work, explaining their solutions, and obtaining accurate answers for each part of the problem.

PERFORMANCE TASK
GRADE 10 – MATHEMATICS
QUARTER 1

CONTENT STANDARDS
The learner demonstrates understanding of key concepts of sequences, polynomials and polynomial equations.

PERFORMANCE TASK
The learner is able to formulate and solve problems involving sequences, polynomials and polynomial equations
in different disciplines through appropriate and accurate representations.

HONEY COMB TABLE

Goal: To cite practical applications of sequence and patterns through a given situation.

Role: An Engineer

Audience: Teacher/Students

Situation: You are an engineer for Mandaue Foam Industries, Inc. who makes custom tables
of varying sizes for banquet halls. You have been asked to design and manufacture round
banquet tables with layered honeycomb cores. Each honeycomb in the core has a height of
one foot. The size of the honeycombs do not change, as the size of the table increases the
number of honeycomb layers increases.

a) Your team at Mandaue Foam Industries, Inc. has been asked to build a table that measures 15 feet in
diameter. Each individual honeycomb cell costs Php 1500 to manufacture, including material and labor costs.
What is the total cost to manufacture the honeycomb core for your table?

b) Mandaue Foam Industries, Inc. just got an order from the Mall of Ace Centerpoint for 80 tables that measure
15 feet in diameter. What is the total cost for the honeycomb cores used to build the 80 tables?

c) Since the Mandaue Foam Industries, Inc. is located in Cebu, Mall of Ace Centerpoint has to pay 6.35% sales
tax on the total cost calculated in part (b). Also Plasticore charges a shipping and handling delivery fee of 10%
of the pre-tax cost. Calculate those two extra fees and find the final total cost of the Mall of Ace Centerpoint
order of eighty 15 feet diameter honeycomb.

Product: Response Expectations

1. You are expected to clearly communicate your result for all three parts (a) & (b) & (c) by
 Showing all mathematics used in solving, including any possible tables, graphs and diagrams you might
have used.
 Explaining each part of the work with complete sentences and labels.
 Answer each part with a full complete sentence.
2. Present a layout of 80 layered honey comb tables.

Standards: Please refer to the rubric below.
