LESSON 3
LET’S ACHIEVE THESE!
• Determine culturally-appropriate terms, expressions, and
images (sensitivity to gender, race, class, etc.)

• Adopt cultural awareness and sensitivity in communication

of ideas
• Living in a globalized world, you encounter people with
diverse cultural backgrounds. Such interactions occur in
social, educational, political and commercial settings.

• Hence, in today’s era of increased global communication, it is

imperative to understand intercultural communication for us
to enhance our intercultural awareness and competence.

• Intercultural competence is essential for us to live

harmoniously despite our differences in culture.

• Parapak (1995) describes our world as a world of diversity.

INTERCULTURAL
COMMUNICATION
• Refers to interaction with people from diverse cultures (Jandt, 1998)
• According to Gamble and Gamble (2008), communication style among cultures
differs; it may be high-context or low-context communication.
• High-context communication is a tradition-linked communication system which
adheres strongly to being indirect. Such as message cannot be understood
without a great deal of background information. Asian, African, Arab, central
European, and Latin American cultures are generally considered to be
high-context cultures. Therefore, a high-context individual is more likely to ask
questions than attempt to work out a solution independently.
• Low-context communication is a system that works on straightforward
communication. It is rule oriented; more knowledge is public, external, and
accessible; shorter duration of communications; knowledge is transferable; and
task-centered, decisions and activities focus around what needs to be done and
the division of responsibilities.
FORMS OF INTERCULTURAL
COMMUNICATION
• INTERRACIAL COMMUNICATION-communicating with people from different
races.

• INTERETHNIC COMMUNICATION-interacting with people from different ethnic

origins.

• INTERNATIONAL COMMUNICATION-communicating between representatives

from different nations.

• INTRACULTURAL COMMUNICATION-interacting with members of the same

racial or ethnic group or co-culture.
GUIDELINES IN IMPROVING
INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION
COMPETENCE
• Recognize the validity and differences of communication styles among
people.

• Learn to eliminate personal biases and prejudices.

• Strive to acquire communication skills necessary in a multicultural
world.
FIRMING UP!
1. In what specific ways can you enhance your ability to communicate with
people from diverse cultures?

CONCRETIZING!
1. “Human beings draw close to one another by their common nature, but
habits and customs keep them apart.” (Confucius) Do you agree or disagree?
Give concrete situations to support your stand.
2. Identify a country where graduates of your program or field of specialization
are in demand. Research on the various cultural modes of communication that a
newly hired employee in that country should remember. Based on your
research, prepare a three-to-four minute presentation.
