Math8 Q1 Week5

The document discusses the rectangular coordinate system, also known as the Cartesian coordinate system. It was created by the French mathematician and philosopher Rene Descartes. The system uses two perpendicular number lines, the x-axis and y-axis, that intersect at the origin (0,0). Any point in the plane is identified with an ordered pair of numbers (x,y) representing its coordinates relative to the axes. The document provides examples of plotting points and finding their coordinates, as well as questions to assess understanding of the coordinate system.

Quarter 1 _ Week 5
RECTANGULAR COORDINATE SYSTEM
Rectangular Coordinate System
⮚ known as Cartesian Coordinate System
⮚ it is attributed to the seventeenth century French Mathematician and
philosopher Rene Descartes
Rene Descartes
⮚ bridged the gap between Algebra and Geometry
⮚ He is known as the ― Father of Modern Geometry
Rectangular Coordinate System
⮚ consist of two number lines which are perpendicular to each other called
coordinate axes
⮚ x-axis - horizontal number line > y-axis- vertical number line -these two axes intersect
at a point (0,0) called the Origin
⮚ The x- and y- axis divide the plane into four sections called Quadrants properly labeled
as I ( upper right), II ( upper left), III ( lower left) and IV ( lower right)
⮚ The coordinates of quadrant I (+x, +y ), quadrant II (-x, + y), quadrant III( -x, -y) and
quadrant IV (
+x, -y).
⮚ Any point in the plane is identified by an ordered pair of numbers denoted by ( x, y)
where x and y are called coordinates of a point.
⮚ Abscissa- x-coordinate, it is always the first coordinate in the ordered pair
⮚ Ordinate-y-coordinate, it is always the second coordinate in the ordered pair.
The center of the plane is the point at which the two axes cross. It is known as the origin, or
point(0,0).From the origin, each axis is further divided into equal units: increasing, positive
numbers to the right on the x-axis and up the y-axis; decreasing, negative numbers to the left on
the x-axis and down the y-axis. The axes extend to positive and negative infinity as shown by the
arrowheads in the figure below.

Counter Clockwise
direction

(0 ,0) or the origin
is the CENTER

Example 1: Find the coordinates of point A.

Step 1: Point the tip of your pen at the origin (0,0)

Step 2: Count the number of units horizontally. In this case, you have to move
going to the right. ( 3 units)

Step 3: Count the number of units vertically. In this case, going up. (2 units)
Step 4: Write it as (x, y) indicating its sign So, the coordinates of point A is A(
3, 2)
Step 1: Point the tip of your pen at the origin (0,0)
Step 2: Move it 4 units to the left Step 3: Move it 5 units up
Step 4: Then, mark a dot.

Example 2: Plot B ( -4, 3 ) in a Cartesian plane.

Note:
Note: Horizontal: going to the right - positive (+)
Horizontal: positive(+) -move to the right Going to the left - negative ( -)
Negative(-)-move to the left Vertical: going to up - Positive (+)
Vertical: positive(+) -move up Negative(-)-
move down
