Types of Maps

Read the images from the old text pages 20 – 23 then answer the following:

1. List the six basic map features and explain why each is needed.

● Title - Identifies the area shown on the map; states the topic, purpose
and focus
● Legend - Explains the meaning of symbols and colours
● Scale - Allows the reader to calculate area and measure distance.
Compares distance between points on the map.
● Date of Publication - Indicates if the information is recent
● Direction - Used to compare distances in relation to each other.
● Border - Sets the map apart from other information
2. Define “large” and “small” scale maps. Give an example of a very large and very
small map scale.

A scale of a map shows the connection between an object size in real life
compared to its size drawn on the map. Small scale maps show a small
amount of detail in a large area. For instance, a map of a continent such as
North America. A large scale map shows large amounts of in a small area.
For instance, a map of a subway system.

3. What is a “Thematic Map”? When is it useful?

A thematic map gives information about a specific purpose. They show

specific data themes for certain areas. They are designed to show only one
type of information. It is useful when trying to find out specific information
for selected area.
4. What is a “General Purpose Map”? When is it useful?

General Purpose maps provide a lot of information. These maps give an

understanding of the locations and features of the area. For example, they
provide information about water features, population, roads, highways, etc.
Most atlas maps fall under this category.

5. What is a “Topographic Map”? When is it useful?

Topographic Maps have symbols to lots of features. The two most
important features are elevation and grid-system. A topographic map is
useful when examining characteristics of a small area in detail.

6. What kind of map is below? Justify your choice.

The map below is a thematic map of Canada showing the soils. It only
represents a specific data theme which is the soil climate. It is not a
topographic map because there is no grid system or elevation shown. It is
also not a general-purpose map because there is no other information
other than the soil climate.
