LET’S REMEMBER THE PAST


OBJETIVO DE LA UNIDAD.

Al finalizar la unidad el estudiante podrá reconocer el pasado del verbo to be en contexto en


diferentes tipos de texto.

I. SIMPLE PAST OF TO BE. PASADO SIMPLE DEL VERBO SER O ESTAR.

El pasado simple se usa, para describir una acción, evento o condición que ocurre en el pasado. A
diferencia del presente solo tiene dos formas:

PRESENT PAST

I am I

He He
was
She is She

It It

We We

You are You were

They They

Conjugación del pasado simple del verbo to be


POSITIVO NEGATIVO INTERROGATIVO

I was I was not Was I?

You were You were not Were you?

He was He was not Was he?

She was She was not Was she?

It was It was not Was it?

We were We were not Were we?

You were You were not Were you?

They were They were not Were they?

Para conjugar la oración negativa añadimos la palabra not después del verbo to be y en la oración
negativa anteponemos el verbo al sujeto como pueden observar en el gráfico anterior.

Veamos el pasado del verbo to be en contexto:

POSITIVE SENTENCES. ORACIONES POSITIVAS.

Ejemplos:

- The Second World War was in 1942.


La Segunda Guerra Mundial fue en 1942.
- It was so cold this morning.
Estaba muy frio está mañana.
- Mary was 20 years old last year.
Mary tenía 20 años el pasado año.
- The Beatles were from Liverpool in England.
Los Beatles eran de Liverpool en Inglaterra.
- John and Paul were good students when they were at University.
John y Paul eran Buenos estudiantes cuando estaban en la Universidad.

NEGATIVE SENTENCES. ORACIONES NEGATIVAS.

Ejemplos:

- The Second World War was not in 1952.


La Segunda Guerra Mundial no fue en 1952.
- It wasn’t hot this morning.
No estaba caliente está mañana.
- The students were not at University these months.
Los estudiantes no estaban en la Universidad estos meses.
- The Beatles weren’t from the United States.
Los Beatles no eran de los Estados Unidos.

En los ejemplos anteriores vemos que el verbo to be puede contractarse was not / wasn’t, were
not / weren’t.

QUESTION FORMS. ORACIONES NEGATIVAS.

Yes/No Questions Preguntas de si y no.

- Was Mary 20 years old last year? Yes, she was.


¿Mary tenía 20 años el pasado año? Si.
- Were the Beatles from Liverpool? Yes, they were
¿Los Beatles eran de Liverpool? Si.
- Was the Second World War in 1942? Yes, it was.
¿La Segunda Guerra Mundial fue en 1942? Si.
- Were the students at university these months? No, they weren’t.
¿Los estudiantes estaban en la Universidad estos meses? No.

Information Questions. Preguntas de información.

- Where were the Beatles from? They were from Liverpool.


¿De dónde eran los Beatles? Eran de Liverpool.
- When was the Second World War? It was in 1942.
¿Cuándo fue la Segunda Guerra Mundial? Fue en 1942.
- How old was Mary last year? She was 20 years old.
¿Cuántos años tenía Mary el año pasado? Tenía 20 años.
- How were you yesterday? We were fine thank you.
¿Cómo estaban ayer? Estábamos bien gracias.

También podemos observar el pasado de las expresiones there is / there are.

PRESENT PAST

THERE IS THERE WAS

Hay en singular había en singular

THERE ARE THERE WERE

Hay en plural Había en plural.

Ejemplos:

- There was an accident yesterday morning.

Hubo un accidente ayer por la mañana.
- There were 51 students last exam.
Había 51 estudiantes el último examen.

NOTA En el texto realizar las siguientes actividades:

- Subraya todas las formas verbales del verbo to be en pasado sea positivo, negativo o
interrogativo en el texto de la página 34.
- Realiza todos los ejercicios del tema.
- Traduce al español el texto de la página 34.
