Science 8 - Q1 - DW2

1) The document describes three science activities that explore Newton's laws of motion through simple experiments involving rolling balls with different masses and pushing grocery carts that are empty vs. full. 2) The activities guide students to observe how objects with greater mass require more force to achieve the same acceleration, based on applying equal net forces to balls of different sizes and pushing grocery carts of different weights. 3) The document also includes word problems for students to solve applying the law of acceleration, and discusses the importance of an ordinance against panic-buying during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Title of the Activity: “Rolling Balls”

Activity No.: 1
Learning Competency:
The learners should be able to show the effect of force and mass on acceleration.
S8FE-Ia-15.6

Direction: You may do this simple activity at home with the help of any home companion.

Materials:
- ping-pong ball
- tennis ball
- marker / pentel pen
- ruler
(NOTE: you may use other kinds of balls, but the balls must differ in mass)

Procedure:
1. Using a ruler, measure a 24-inch distance between two points. Mark one point as
Point A and the other as Point B. Draw lines to indicate each point.
2. Place the ping-pong ball and the tennis ball at the line before Point A. Using the same
amount of force, push the two balls towards Point B.
3. Observe as the balls roll. You may repeat the procedure several times.

Guide Questions:
1. How will you compare the masses of the two balls that you used? Which one is lighter,
which one is heavier?

___________________________________________________________________________________
2. Which ball moved faster and covered a longer distance? Why do you think is this so?
___________________________________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________________________________

Closure: How will you relate the masses of the two objects to their acceleration, provided
that an equal net force is applied?

Title of the Activity: “Law of Acceleration”

Activity No.: 2
Learning Competency:
The learners should be able to solve problems involving the Law of Acceleration.
S8FE-Ia-15.8

Direction: Solve the following problems on the Law of Acceleration.

1. What force must 2. What is the net 3. A tennis racket hit

act on a 50kg mass force needed to a sand-filled tennis
to give it an accelerate a 4.5kg ball with a force of
acceleration of laundry cart to 4.5N. While the

contact with the
racket, what is its
acceleration?

Title of the Activity: “Shop and Push”

Activity No.: 3
Learning Competency:
The learners should be able to show the effect of force and mass on acceleration.
S8FE-Ia-15.6

Direction: Considering the three variables involved in Newton’s Second Law of Motion: force,
mass and acceleration, study the pictures below and answer the questions that follow.

Guide Questions:
1. Which grocery pushcart do you think is easier to push, the cart that is empty or the
cart that is full?
___________________________________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________________________________
2. Defend your answer in Question No 1. Relate the three quantities in the Second Law
of Motion (force, acceleration, mass) in proving your answer.

Pasig City is one of the cities which

immediately implemented an ordinance
against panic-buying and hoarding in
groceries during the Enhanced Community
Quarantine.

Closure: Do you think the implementation of such ordinance is important in times of

pandemic? Why? Why not?
