Lab Objectives

This first part of this lab is designed to familiarize the student with the Component Class drives
(PowerFlex 4M) keypad and programming. The second part is designed to familiarize the student with
Drive Explorer software and programming PowerFlex drives. At the conclusion of this lab, the student will
be able to:
• Be familiar with the drive’s status indicators and keypad.
• Be able to view and manipulate numeric parameters.
• Be able control the drive with the integral keypad.

• Connect to a local PowerFlex drive using DriveExplorer software

• Display the Status View

• Display and edit parameters with the Linear List View

• Display and edit parameters with the File / Group View

• Use the Control Bar to control a drive

• Use a Wizard

• Upload configuration from drive to PC

• Download configuration to drive from PC

• Use the Compare action.

Document Conventions

Throughout this workbook, we have used the following conventions to help guide you through the lab
materials.
This style or symbol: Indicates:
ATTENTION: Identifies information about practices or
circumstances that can lead to personal injury or death,
property damage, or economic loss. Attentions help you:
• identify a hazard
• avoid the hazard
• recognize the consequences

Words shown in bold (e.g., Any item or button that you must click on, or a menu name
RSLogix 5000 or OK) from which you must choose an option or command. This will
be an actual name of an item that you see on your screen or
in an example.
Words shown in bold italics, An item that you must type in the specified field. This is
enclosed in single quotes information that you must supply based on your application
(e.g., 'Controller1') (e.g., a variable).
Note: When you type the text in the field, remember that you
do not need to type the quotes; simply type the words that
are contained within them (e.g., Controller1).
The text that appears inside of this gray box is supplemental
information regarding the lab materials, but not information
that is required reading in order for you to complete the lab
exercises. The text that follows this symbol may provide you
with helpful hints that can make it easier for you to use this
product. Most often, authors use this “Tip Text” style for
important information they want their students to see.
Note: If the mouse button is not specified in the text, you should click on the left mouse button.

Energizing the Demo

ATTENTION: Hazardous voltages exist beneath the drive

cover. Contact with circuits under the cover can result in
death or serious injury by electric shock. Do NOT remove
the drive cover.

1. Prepare the control switches.

Position the selector switch “Drive/190E” in the “Drive” position.

2. Energize the demo, by switching the 120V AC switch to the on position.

Changing Numeric Parameter Data
There are two types of numeric parameters. One type displays data from the drive (e.g. volts,
frequency, time or percentage). The other type represents a particular configuration setting (e.g.
parameter P106 [Start Souce] option 0 = Keypad).

1. Use the integral potentiometer, located on the drive HIM rotate to the full
clockwise direction. This will set the commanded speed to 60Hz.

2. Press the to start the drive..

3. Once the drive reaches full speed. Press to stop the drive. Observe the time in
seconds, the motor ramps to zero speed. Record this time.

4. Press or . The parameter that was last viewed will appear.

Integral Keypad Control

Factory default parameter values allow the drive to be controlled from the integral keypad. No
programming is required to start, stop, change direction and control speed directly from the integral
keypad.

1. Press to start the drive.

2. Use the integral potentiometer to increase or decrease the output frequency or speed.

3. Use the integral potentiometer to increase the output frequency to “60.0” Hz.

4. Press to reverse the direction of the motor. Notice that the “Forward” (FWD) LED
flashes while the motor is decelerating, and the “Reverse” (REV) LED is steadily illuminated to
indicate the commanded direction. Notice also that the drive will decelerate in 2.0 seconds,
which is the deceleration time that was programmed in the previous exercise.

5. Press to again reverse the direction of the motor. Notice that the “Reverse” (REV)
LED flashes while the motor is decelerating, and the “Forward” (FWD) LED is steadily illuminated
to indicate the commanded direction.

6. Press to stop the drive. Notice that the drive will stop the motor in 2.0 seconds, which
is the deceleration time that was programmed in the previous exercise.

7. De-energize the demo by switching the 120V AC switch to the OFF position

Setting-up the Demo

Connecting and Energizing the Demo

ATTENTION: High Voltage Shock Hazards and Arc Flash

Hazards Exist. Do not remove cover unless ALL power is removed.
Verify this by checking if the Power switch is in the off position or
by unplugging the drive demo. The front cover must be in place
prior to applying power to the demo. Do not energize the
equipment while the cover is removed.

1. De-energize the demo by switching the 120V AC switch to the OFF position

2. Connect the 1203-USB converter.

• Connect the A style (larger) end of the USB cable to a USB port on the computer.

• Connect the B style (smaller) end of the USB cable to the converter.

• Un-Plug the grey cable from the drives RJ-45 connection.

• Connect the RJ45 end of the 22-HIM-H10 cable to the drive.

• Connect the other end to the converter.

3. Energize the demo.

Switch the 120V AC switch to the on position.

Starting DriveExplorer

1. Double-click the DriveExplorer icon to start the software.

2. If the Danger dialog appears, read it and click OK.

3. Maximize the DriveExplorer window, so it fills the entire screen.

If RSLinx is running, right-click on its icon in the service tray of the computer’s
task bar, and select Shutdown RSLinx.

Configuring Communications

1. If you are using a 1203-USB converter, you need to know which serial port is assigned to the 1203-
USB driver. Do this:

a. Open the Windows Control Panel and double-click on System.

b. In the System Properties window, click on the Hardware tab and then click Device Manager.

c. In the Device Manager treeview, expand the Port (COM & LPT) group. The assigned COM
port is shown in parenthesis at the end of the Allen-Bradley 1203-USB entry.

2. Select Explore > Configure Communication … to configure how DriveExplorer communicates with
the drive.

3. Click on the Serial radio button. Select the serial port assigned to the 1203 USB Driver for Port and
115200 for Baud and click OK.

4. Click on the Connect Serial icon to start communicating with the drive. The progress will be
displayed while DriveExplorer reads the drive information.

5. If there is a problem with the communication setup or physical connection, the pop-up window will
display “Connecting to Node 255”. Re-check the converter connections and the communication
settings.

6. When finished (and communication is successful), the Status View window is automatically displayed.

Note: Please ask an instructor for assistance if there is a problem
communicating with the drive.

Displaying the Status View

The Status View displays the drive’s User Text (“PowerFlex 4M” in the image above) as well as
important drive information, such as voltage and amp ratings, series, revision, and operational
status.

The Status View is automatically displayed the first time you connect to a drive. You can also
display it at any time by clicking on the drive name in the device tree (PowerFlex 4M in the
above image). You can display the status view for any peripheral (e.g. the serial adapter or
other communication adapter) by selecting the peripheral in the device tree.

Displaying Parameters with the Linear List View

1. Click on Parameter List in the device tree to display a linear list of the drive parameters.

2. Double-click on Parameter d002 [Commanded Freq].

This is a read-only parameter that displays the value of the commanded frequency. Adjust the
potentiometer to see the value change. Click Close.

3. Scroll down and double-click on Parameter P109 [Accel Time 1].

This is a writeable parameter that determines the time it takes to go from 0 Hz to Max. Frequency
(typically 60 Hz). To edit this parameter, a new value would be entered and then either OK or Apply
would be clicked. Click Cancel.

Displaying Parameters with the File / Group View

The File / Group view displays the parameters in logical groupings and as they appear in the User
Manual.
