DECIMAL NUMBERS

II. Learning Objectives

At the end of the lesson, you should be able to:

A. add and subtract decimal numbers through thousandths without and with regrouping;

B. solve routine or non-routine problems involving addition and subtraction of decimal numbers
including money using appropriate problem-solving strategies and tools; and

C. appreciate the value of decimals through a situation that needs computations involving
everyday quantities such as money.

III. Challenge Yourself

Directions: A. Add and subtract the numbers mentally. Item number one is done
for you.

IV.Let’s Say!

In this module, you will learn that decimals are simply fractions written in
different forms. Decimals represent part of or more than a whole number.
Strategies for adding and subtracting decimals are the same strategies we have
always used with whole numbers.

V. Let’s Think!

How to add and subtract decimals?

VI. Let’s Extend your Understanding

When adding or subtracting decimals, write the decimal numbers vertically and align the
decimal points.

Is the procedure in adding/ subtracting whole numbers the same

with decimals?

You are asked to buy ingredients for spaghetti. The price list
of the ingredients is on the table below. How much do you
have to pay? If your money is ₱500, how much is your
change?

Goods Price
Spaghetti Sauce ₱89.75
Ground Pork ₱105.5
Spaghetti Noodles ₱35.75
Hotdogs ₱125.35

Solutions: 89.75
105.50 To add decimals, we just have to
35.75 align the decimal point of the
125.35 numbers, then add.

356.35

Mathematics 5- ADDING AND SUBTRACTING DECIMAL NUMBERS

MODULE 2 LESSON 2 Jonalyn H. Almazan, LPT
500.00 To subtract decimals, we just have to align
the decimal point of the numbers and the
- 356.35 digit according to its place value, then
subtract. We add zeros if there is no
143.65 decimal number.

Therefore, the total amount is ₱356.35 and the change from ₱500 is ₱143.65.

Other examples: Steps:

1. Find the sum of 83.54,71.632 and 305.7. 1. Align the decimal
83.540
71.632
points in column.
305.700 2. Add the way you add
460.872 whole numbers.

2. Find the sum of 8.53, 0.921, and 13.64.

8.530
0.921
13.640
23.091

3. What is the difference between 12.5 and 3.756?

Steps:
12.500 1. Align the decimal points
- 3.756 in column.
8.744 2. Subtract the way you
4. Find the difference between 5.12 and 3.5. subtract whole
numbers.
5.12
- 3.5
1.62

TRY THIS!
Directions: Give the missing number. Write your answer on the blank.

1. 378.27 - ___________= 196.956

2. 43.297 + ___________= 150.9
3. ___________+ 917.28 = 1000. 5

Read Up! Absorb! Discover!

Sebastian ran 6.5 km on the first day. On the next day, as he conditioned his body, he ran
1.75 km more than the first day. How many kilometers did he run on the second day?

We add 6.5 and 1.75 to get the number of kilometers Sebastian ran
on the second day.

Solutions:

6.50
+ 1.75
8.25 km

Mrs. Cruz bought 8.7 kg. of chicken legs. She used 5.35 kg. in cooking mixed
vegetables. How much chicken legs were left?

Solutions:

8.70
- 5.35
3.35 kg

VII. LET’S Remember

To add or subtract several mixed decimal numbers,

align first the decimal points, and then add or subtract.
When subtracting decimals, affix zeros after the
decimals of the minuend to align the digits to the
subtrahend.
