DECIMAL NUMBERS
A. add and subtract decimal numbers through thousandths without and with regrouping;
B. solve routine or non-routine problems involving addition and subtraction of decimal numbers
including money using appropriate problem-solving strategies and tools; and
C. appreciate the value of decimals through a situation that needs computations involving
everyday quantities such as money.
Directions: A. Add and subtract the numbers mentally. Item number one is done
for you.

In this module, you will learn that decimals are simply fractions written in
different forms. Decimals represent part of or more than a whole number.
Strategies for adding and subtracting decimals are the same strategies we have
always used with whole numbers.

V. Let’s Think!
When adding or subtracting decimals, write the decimal numbers vertically and align the
decimal points.
You are asked to buy ingredients for spaghetti. The price list
of the ingredients is on the table below. How much do you
have to pay? If your money is ₱500, how much is your
change?
Goods Price
Spaghetti Sauce ₱89.75
Ground Pork ₱105.5
Spaghetti Noodles ₱35.75
Hotdogs ₱125.35
Solutions: 89.75
105.50 To add decimals, we just have to
35.75 align the decimal point of the
125.35 numbers, then add.
356.35
Therefore, the total amount is ₱356.35 and the change from ₱500 is ₱143.65.
TRY THIS!
Directions: Give the missing number. Write your answer on the blank.
Sebastian ran 6.5 km on the first day. On the next day, as he conditioned his body, he ran
1.75 km more than the first day. How many kilometers did he run on the second day?
We add 6.5 and 1.75 to get the number of kilometers Sebastian ran
on the second day.
Solutions:
6.50
+ 1.75
8.25 km
Mrs. Cruz bought 8.7 kg. of chicken legs. She used 5.35 kg. in cooking mixed
vegetables. How much chicken legs were left?
Solutions:
8.70
- 5.35
3.35 kg
