The goals of prenatal care are to ensure a healthy pregnancy and delivery of a healthy infant, identify and treat any high risk conditions, and individualize care for the patient. Prenatal care involves health assessments including medical history, physical exams, and laboratory tests to screen for risks and promote maternal and fetal well-being. Health promotion addresses self-care needs of the mother such as nutrition, exercise, and hygiene.
