EFB Graph Writing

- Now that you have slightly studied how to make a graph/chart writing, I will summarize
the whole points and add some more details to make you writing much better.

- Let’s study the following line graph as an example:

Paragraph One: Introduction

- What to do in the first paragraph is to explain what the line graph is about. In order to
do this, we have to ask wh-questions like what it is about, when does it happen, who
are the participants and etcetera.

- If we look at the line graph, it can be seen that the line graph is about the number of
consumption of three kinds of fast food namely pizza, fish and chips and hamburgers by
Australian teenagers. The consumption is measured in the year of 1975, 1980,1985,
1990 to 2000. This means that the measurement is counted per 5 years. During those
periods, the consumption for each of the fast food have been changing.

- Use present tense for the introduction.

- Therefore, based on those information, it can be summed up that our first paragraph
will be an introduction as follows:
The line graph depicts the changing number of Australian teenagers’ consumption
of three different kinds of fast food measured in every five-year period, starting from the
year of 1975 to 2000.

Paragraph 2-4: Analysis

- Next, in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th paragraphs, we are going to analyze each of the line graphs.
Let’s start with the line graph of pizza, followed by the line of the hamburgers and finally
the line of fish and chips.

- Before we start the analysis, what needs to be inserted in the analysis is the vocabulary
of movements as follows:

- The next important thing to remember is that we do not need to detail all the line
movements. Choose only the significant ones. Normally, the important ones are the
ones that show the trend of rising, falling or being stable.

- It is also a must to include degrees of comparison in your analysis, which means there
will be words like ‘the lowest’, ‘higher’, ‘as many as’, etcetera.

- Use past tense for the analysis.

- It is also important to note down the number of the change. Prepositions can be used to
do this as follows:

‘by’ means ‘sebanyak/sejumlah’

‘to’ means ‘menjadi’
‘at’ means ‘di-/pada posisi’

- To make it clearer, let’s make our 2 nd paragraph which focuses on the line graph of pizza
as follows:

The number of consumption of pizza by Australian teenagers was the lowest in 1975, only 5
in that year. However, in the next five years, the number rose quite significantly by 13
consumptions. The increase was even sharper in the following years and reached its peak at 82
in 1995. Starting from that year, the number of the pizza consumption remained stable in the
particular number till the year of 2000.

- Now that we have finished the 2nd paragraph, let’s continue our analysis to the 3rd one. It
is advisable that you use transition word before moving to another paragraph like one
the other hand, however, therefore, furthermore, besides and etcetera. The 3rd
paragraph will detail the analysis of the line graph of pizza as follows:

- Let’s continue the 3rd paragraph with the line graph analysis of hamburgers as follows:

Quite similar to pizza, the number of hamburgers consumed had a significant. It started at
10 consumptions. However, in the next ten years, it went up sharply by more than eight times.
And yet, from 1995 to 2000, the consumption remained constant, which was similar to the
trend of pizza but in a different number of consumption.

- Let’s continue the 4th paragraph with the analysis of fish and chips as follows:

On the other hand, fish and chips had the highest consumption at 100 in the initial year,
1975. However, the consumptions had a sharp decrease to 82 in the next five years. Though the
number had a rise to almost 100 in 1985, the number of fish and chips eaten plunged steeply by
more than 60 consumptions in the year of 2000.

Paragraph 5: Conclusion

- What makes analysis different from the conclusion is that in the conclusion, we have to
conclude the overall findings of our analysis.
- Use transition words like in conclusion, to conclude, overall, as a conclusion and
etcetera.
- Use past tense.
- Don’t come up with new points in the conclusion.
- It mustn’t be too long, 2 or 3 sentences will do.
- Let’s make our conclusion as follows:

Overall, the line graphs of hamburgers and pizza had an increasing trend and levelled off
in their final years. As for fish and chips, it showed the opposite trend. Though it started at the
highest number of consumption in the initial year, it ended up at the lowest of the three in the
final year.
