Electrical Grounding and Bonding

The document discusses electrical grounding and bonding, explaining that grounding connects to a common point which may or may not be connected to earth, while bonding permanently joins metallic parts to ensure electrical continuity. It outlines three primary functions and discusses equipment grounding and system grounding schemes and protection, providing general requirements for grounding and bonding electrical systems and equipment.

Electrical Grounding and Bonding

WHY GROUND?
Effects of Electrical Current on the Human
Body
The most important reason is to protect
people!
Secondary reasons include protection
of structures and equipment from
unintentional contact with energized
electrical lines.
The grounding system must ensure
maximum safety from electrical system
faults and lightning.
Grounding
Grounding is connecting to a common point which is
connected back to the electrical source. It may or may
not be connected to earth. An example where it is not
connected to earth is the grounding of the electrical
system inside an airplane.
Bonding
Bonding is the permanent joining of metallic parts to
form an electrically conductive path that will ensure
electrical continuity and the capacity to conduct safely
any current likely to be imposed.

General Requirements for
Grounding and Bonding

● Grounding of electrical systems. Electrical

systems that are required to be grounded
shall be connected to earth in a manner that
will limit the voltage imposed by lightning,
line surges, or unintentional contact with
higher voltage lines and that will stabilize the
voltage to earth during normal operation
General Requirements for
Grounding and Bonding

● Grounding of Electrical Equipment.

Conductive materials enclosing electrical
conductors or equipment, shall be connected
to earth so as to limit the voltage to ground
on these materials
General Requirements for
Grounding and Bonding

● Bonding of Electrical Equipment. Where the

electrical system is required to be grounded,
these materials shall be connected together
and to supply system grounded conductor.
Where the electrical system is not solidly
grounded, these materials shall be connected
together in a manner that
