Research Proposal 1

This document presents a research proposal for studying the effectiveness of an aloe vera and honey face wash. The researchers aim to develop a natural, inexpensive face wash using aloe vera and honey as the key ingredients. They will test the face wash on 6-8 people to evaluate its properties, such as aroma and efficiency, and determine how long the product lasts and can be preserved. The researchers hypothesize that the face wash will exfoliate dead skin cells and reduce acne for a smooth complexion, comparable to commercial products but at a lower cost since the ingredients can be found at home. If shown to be effective, the face wash could benefit consumers, the environment, and future researchers.

I. INTRODUCTION

Cleanliness is wealth. It is important, and must be considered due to the environment

around us. There are various bacteria, dust, and pollution which causes a lot of impurities and

diseases. Acne appears as one of its signs. To prevent the occurrence of the future problems it

may cause, handling it from outside the body by using a natural face wash is one of the solutions

hereby presented today.

One of the herbal products that are often used in cleansing skin is Aloe vera. It is a

medicinal plant traditionally used since 1500 BC in various countries including Greece, China and

Mexico. Aloe vera have also been used for treating diseases and skin lesions. It belongs to the

Liliaceae family, is similar to cactus, and is herbaceous, perennial plant with thick, fleshy long

leaves. Aloe vera is known for being an anti-tumor, anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic, anti-bacterial,

anti-viral and antiseptic plant. It is also used for skin protection and healing wounds.

Another herbal product that is often used to heal wounds is Honey. Honey is a bee-derived,

supersaturated solution composed mainly of fructose and glucose, containing proteins, amino

acids, vitamins, enzymes, minerals, and other minor components. Honey plays an important role

for being antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial agent and augments the adherence of skin

grafts and wound healing process. The role of honey has been acknowledged in the scientific

literature and there is convincing evidence in support of its antioxidant and antibacterial nature,

cough prevention, fertility and wound healing properties.

The researchers hereby present an adhering solution to prevent the aforementioned side

tracks that may harm the face. To make an organic, non-factored and natural face wash is what

the researchers aim to make. It would be much practical and safer for sensitive skin and is

environmental friendly, does not cause pollution and harnessing the use of natural producing

materials.

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

A good skin care routine equates to the product you use. While good quality products can

help your skin look better now as well as in the future, poor quality products can be ineffective and

even cause harm. As you age, your skin’s cells turn over more slowly, make it look duller and less

radiant. Using a natural skin care product can help remove dead skin cells, wherein your body will

replace them with newer and more youthful cells. Certified organic products are derived from

plants and other naturally occurring ingredients. More importantly, those organic ingredients are

grown without the use of pesticides, herbicides, synthetic fertilizers, genetically modified

organisms (GMOs), and other additives or chemicals. With that, you can assure your skin and

body absorb only real, natural ingredients that are not harmful for the skin. Without harsh

chemicals, organic skincare products are less likely to cause allergic reactions, inflammations or

irritations. So therefore, the researchers thought of making honey and aloe vera facial wash to

make a cheaper yet skin-friendly product.

Honey is one of the most appreciated and valued natural products introduced to humankind

since ancient times. Honey is a natural product formed from nectar of flowers by honeybees (Apis

mellifera; Family: Apidae). It has been used by humans since ancient times, nearly 5500 years

ago. Most ancient population, including the Greeks, Chinese, Egyptians, Romans, Mayans, and

Babylonians, consumed honey both for nutritional aims and for its medicinal properties. It is the

only insect-derived natural product that has nutritional, cosmetic, therapeutic, and industrial

values. Honey no needs to refrigerate, it never spoils, and it can also be stored unopened at room

temperature in a dry place. In its natural form, honey is produced by enzyme activity, plant matter,

and live bacteria coming together to create a powerful ingredient with hundreds of practical uses.

The unique process that creates honey makes it especially valuable for cosmetic uses, such as

clearing acne, healing scars, and evening out skin tone. Honey speeds up your skin cells’ healing

processes. Using it on your face can eliminate dead skin cells that make your skin look dull, and

can even make the skin brighter.

The Aloe vera plant has been known and used for centuries for its health, beauty, medicinal

and skin care properties. Aloe vera is safe to use on the face, preventing skin conditions such as

eczema, rosacea, or minor wounds. It contains enzymes that helps in reducing excessive

inflammation when applied to the skin topically, while helping in the breakdown of sugars and fats.

Aloe vera gel has been reported to have a protective effect against radiation damage to the skin. It

has great antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and skin healing properties, and is also known to fight

the damaging effects of pollution and UV rays on the skin. Moreover, aloe vera deeply moisturizes

the skin without leaving it greasy and makes a smooth, light facial cleanser. Inventing a natural

facial wash product made of honey and aloe vera will help to clear acnes, heal scars, and help the

skin to be brighter. And at the same time, it is skin-friendly and does not contain chemicals.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

RELATED LITERATURE

The findings that are found that have connection about the research topic will be part of the

evidence or proof for the work of the researchers. The review of related literature about aloe vera

and honey as face wash will be reviewed thoroughly in the corresponding chapter.

Aloe vera is a natural product that came from a plant in the genus Aloe. Nowadays, the said

extracted product of the plant is mostly used in cosmetology. Hamman, Josias (2008) stated that

many of the health-related parts of aloe vera is connected in the polysaccharides located at the gel

of the leaves. Polysaccharides is one of the carbohydrate’s three types. It is a major class of

biomolecules, and serves as a structural organization in both animals and plants. They provide

support to the cells, store energy in organisms and a lot more. Together with the biological

activities, aloe vera promotes wound healing, antifungal activity, hypoglycemic or antidiabetic

effects, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, immunomodulatory and gastroprotective properties.

Dermatol, Indian (2008) stated that aloe vera contains enzymes which helps in reducing

excessive inflammation while applied and helps down in breaking sugar and fats. In the same

review, it was claimed that aloe vera can prevent or protect radiation damage in your skin. Aloe

release fibroblast which produces collagen and elastin fibers that makes the skin more elastic

and less wrinkly. Achieving a softer skin with aloe vera is one of the benefits it possesses,

namely because of the consistent effect on the superficial flaking epidermal cells which sticks

them together. It also has an anti-acne effect, which comes with the amino acids that softens

hard skin and retain skin moisture and integrity.

Ediriweera ER (2012) concluded that honey is an invaluable natural substance that can be

of many uses. Effective as medicine, a safe home remedy, cosmetic and nutrient usable of any

age. Honey is a rejuvenator because of its antioxidant characteristics, and it is used as a

moisturizer and conditioner in the cosmetics industry. Honey can be used as a skin moisturizer,

softener, and healer. Honey is useful in terms of skin illnesses, according to studies. It improves

rehydration, is readily digestible, increases immunity, and is beneficial in terms of skin disorders.

With its comforting as well as moisturizing impacts, raw honey can moisten the skin, leaving

it soft, glowing, as well as radiant,” states Ildi Pekar.  “The sugars in honey work as all-natural

humectants and moisturizers that boost the water web content and minimize dry skin in the skin

after they have been cleaned off.”

The sugar that belongs to honey act as humectants and emollients which increases the

water content and is a cause of reducing dryness in the skin as they’ve washed off. Honey

could be considered as a natural therapeutic agent for several medicinal purposes. Since

ancient times, honey has been known for nutritive and therapeutic values. Honey is a great

remedy in fighting acnes. It is anti-inflammatory which reduce the redness and swelling of pimples.

Even so, honey helps in fighting acne-caused bacteria with propolis infused.

Some pre-measures warned that the use of honey is implacable if you are allergenic to

pollen or bees. In order to proceed, having a patch test would be the best way for testing

honey on your skin.
