Objectives

Background/Overview
Commodore is a community located in East Portland with a population of approximately 550
residents. A large amount of the adult population are returning residents. The main economic
activity is Agriculture which includes crops and animal rearing. This is mostly done by persons
over forty years old. Most of the Youth who have completed school remain idle or leave the
community to seek employment or study. There has been an upsurge in criminal activities
within the past 4 years, particularly praedial larceny.
Methodology

Description of Sample
The sample for this study included 20 selected residents. There were 10 males and 10 females
and a mixture of youth, young adults and senior citizens. Employed and unemployed persons
were included.

Data Type
The data type was quantitative.

Data collection strategies


A total of 20 questionnaires were used in order to collect information from members of
the community to ensure accurate conclusions on “ effects of unemployment within the
community of Commodore.”

The persons were carefully selected to represent a wide cross section from the
community to cater for all the requirements necessary. The researcher chose 50% male
and 50% female to ensure fairness. They were then supplied with the questionnaires
and arranged for a time to collect them within ten (10) days

Figure 2 is a pie chart showing reasons for unemployment. Figure 2 indicates that of the 20
respondents, 75% said there are not enough jobs available while 15% said they are not qualified
and 10% said they are not interested in the jobs available.

Family size

The bar graph above shows that 5 persons (25%) live in family size of 1 to 4 persons, 8 persons

( 40%) have families of between 5 and 6 and 6 persons (30%) live in households with 7 to 10

persons. Only 1 person (5%)lived in household with more than 10 persons.

The chart above shows that 85% of the crimes committed are done by unemployed persons
while persons from outside the community account for 10%. Only 5% of the crimes are done by
employed persons who crave for more.
