Direct Quotation: Short Quotations

Direct quotations reproduce word-for-word material from another source. They must be enclosed in quotation marks and attributed to the original author. Quotations less than 40 words should be incorporated into a sentence, while longer quotations are formatted as a block without quotation marks. Proper citation of the source, including author, publication date, title, and page number is required. Direct quotations should be used when representing an expert opinion or reproducing a passage that would change meaning if summarized.

Direct Quotation

 A Direct Quotation reproduces word-for-word material taken directly from another

author’s work
 Usually short part of the text
 Cited part appears between quotation marks “ ” ”
 Does match the original source word for word
 Must be attributed to the original source

Guidelines/Steps in Direct Quotation:

1. Copy exactly the part of the text that you want to use
2. Use the quotation mark to show the beginning and ending of the quote.
3. Record the details of the original source
(author’s name/s, date of publication, title, publisher, date of publication, title,
publisher; place of publisher, URL [if on-line] and page number/s).
4. Indicate the page number/s.
5. Format your quotation properly.

Format in Direct Quotation:

SHORT QUOTATIONS
 Quotations of less than 40 words are enclosed in "double quotation marks" and
incorporated into the text of your sentence.
Ex. 1 (Narrative)
According to Palladino and Wade (2010), “a flexible mind is a healthy” (p.147)
Ex. 2. (Parenthetical)
“From the point of view of a US based food company the EU rules may appear to be
trade protectionism rather than reasonable consumer protection.” (Andersen, 2010,
p. 141)

BLOCK QUOTATIONS
 Quotations of more than 40 words or more should be intended and omit the
quotation marks
- Ex. 1 (Block quotation with parenthetical citation)
Researchers have studied how people talk to themselves:

Inner speech is a paradoxical phenomenon. It is an experience that is central to

many people’s everyday lives, and yet it presents considerable challenges to any
effort to study it scientifically. Nevertheless, a wide range of methodologies and
approaches have combined to shed light on the subjective experience of inner
speech and its cognitive and neural underpinnings. (Alderson-Day &
Fernyhough, 2015, p. 957)
- Ex. 2 (Block quotation with narrative citation)
Flores et al. (2018) described how they addressed potential researcher bias when
working with an intersectional community of transgender people of color:

Everyone on the research team belonged to a stigmatized group but also held
privileged identities. Throughout the research process, we attended to the ways
in which our privileged and oppressed identities may have influenced the
research process, findings, and presentation of results. (p. 311)

When to use Direct Quotation:

- If the author's opinion represents a large group of experts or scholars.
- It's hard to summarize the original paragraph, and if you do you will change the
meaning.
