Integrated Projects and STEAM G7

This document outlines an integrated STEAM project for 7th grade students. The project involves students working in teams to create a "Class Bank" over 8 weeks. As part of the project, students will study cell structures in science, learn math banking concepts, design the bank in art class, and code an app for the bank in technology class. Additional related mini-projects will cover regions of North America in English class and countries in Western world history. The projects aim to develop students' 21st century skills like collaboration, problem solving, and communication through an integrated, meaningful learning experience.

Academics, educators, business groups, and policymakers are finding common ground in a movement to
bring “21st century skills” to the classroom. Although definitions vary, most lists of 21st century skills include
those needed items to make the students be able to cope with global challenges. Like creativity and those
considered vital to working and living in an increasingly complex, rapidly changing global society “Some of these
skills have always been important but are now taking on another meaning—like collaboration. Now you have to be
able to collaborate across the globe with someone you might never meet.

Students will be ready for college, citizenship, and employment. Teaching 21st century skills does not
necessarily mean using a lot of technology, although projects may involve computers, software, and other devices.
Sometimes it is simply a matter of approaching an assignment differently to allow students to demonstrate skills
like teamwork, collaboration, and self-directed learning. Equally important is making sure teachers are able to
coach students on how to advance to the next level of a particular skill. This is often done with rubrics that explain
clearly, what are the expectations desired for each project and the objectives of each project.

One of the tools to emphasize these skills is integrated and STEAM Projects. Integration is to combine
into a whole. Thus, when integrating projects, the emphasis is on a comprehensive understanding of a "whole,"
rather than many unrelated "parts."

Teachers and students are working together to build an education based upon what students' experiences and what
they know, so that learning becomes meaningful.
