 Students should be familiar with the basic concept of the various economic systems.
RECOGNITION OF EXCEPTIONAL LEARNERS:
 Very quiet students (do not participate in class) as well as those students who work very
quickly and accurately. Perhaps treats will be offered to encourage the introverted students
to participate more and the usual additional worksheets will be provided for the students
who need them.
OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson students should be able to:
 Identify the three basic economic systems,
 Examine the three basic economic questions as it relates to economic systems,
 State the advantages and disadvantages of the systems

Economic Systems
Basic economic questions
No two countries that are organized in the same way. They all have to make certain decisions
which are influenced by political situations. Decisions of:
• What to produce?

(eg. What quantity of food, machinery, or service should be produced?)
• How should it be produced?
What is the best way to combine the factors of production? Should automated or manual
methods be used? What technological equipment (eg. Computer) is required? Where should
production take place?
•For whom should production take place?
Should everyone be entitled to an equal share of production, or should some receive more than
others?
Economic Systems and the Basic Questions
1. Traditional Economy
What to produce, how it is to be produced and shared out, are not seen as economic problems
because these have been decided long ago by families, tribes or ethnic groups.

2. Market Economy

Individuals decide what to consume and how to spend their income, firms decide what and how
they should produce.

3. Command Economy

Government makes all economic decisions (including the what, how and whom of
production/three basic questions)

4. Mixed Economy

Both individuals and Government makes economic decisions

Hot Potato - Teacher will play music; while music is playing students will pass a ball
around. When the music stops the student who is left with the ball will categorize a characteristic
