DVD To DVDR For Beginners

This document provides step-by-step instructions for backing up a DVD to a DVD-R disc using Mac applications DVDBackup 1.3, DVD2ONE, and Toast Titanium. The process involves opening the DVD in a DVD player to extract encryption keys, using DVDBackup to copy files to the hard drive, processing the files with DVD2ONE to create a DVD-R compatible version, and burning the DVD-R using Toast Titanium. When completed, the original DVD contents can be played back from the new DVD-R disc.

DVD to DVDr For Beginners

Example using Patch Adams Widescreen DVD

Applications Needed:
1. DVDBackup 1.3
2. DVD2ONE
3. Toast Titanium

Step 1. Insert DVD Into Your Mac

1. Inserting the DVD will cause it to mount to your
desktop. As seen in the picture to the right, the
DVD mounted and is called PATCH169_CE.
2. Create a new folder on the desktop and name that
DVDNAME_BACKUP. For example, I named the
folder PATCH_BACKUP.

Step 2. Open DVD in DVD Player

1. Depending on your setup this may have happened
automatically. If it did not, go to
HD/APPLICATIONS/DVD PLAYER and open the
application. It will automatically begin to read the
DVD. It’s a good idea to let the disk load to the
menu, click SCENE SELECTIONS and watch each
chapter for a few seconds. This stores the DVD keys which will be
used by DVDBackup later.
2. When you have viewed each chapter for a few seconds, close the
application by quitting it.

Step 2. Open DVDBackup 1.3

1. Once the window for the application is open, drag the DVD from the
desktop into the area that says DVD Files to Backup (as seen in this
picture)
2. Once you have done this you will see the list of files contained on the
DVD that need to be copied to the HD. Additionally, you can see the
total number of files and the total size of all of these files. As seen
below, for this dvd there are 24 Files totaling 7.6 GB. This is how large
this commercial dvd is. (It is greater than 4.4 GB so It wont fit onto a
DVDr yet.)
3. To begin copying the files over, click PROCESS FILES and choose the
folder you made on the desktop called PATCH_BACKUP as the save
location. This will put a new VIDEO_TS folder into that
PATCH_BACKUP folder which is the same as the DVD disk. When it
is processing it will look like this….
4 . When the process is complete, the window will return to how it
appeared in part 1 of this step.

Step 3. Create A New Folder For The DVDr You Will Burn
1. Create a new folder on the desktop and rename it
to DVDNAME_DVDr. My example would then be
PATCH_DVDr as seen in the picture to the right
2 . This folder is where you will save the NEW
VIDEO_TS folder as a result of DVD2ONE and
this will help you keep straight which one is
which.
Step 4. Open DVD2ONE
1 . With the application open, click on the button
called (…) to select the input file. You will see a
screen that looks like this…
2. Click DESKTOP, then PATCH_DVD and you will see that it is
selecting all of the files you just created using DVDBackup 1.3
3. Click select
4. You will now see DVD2ONE change into a window that looks like this..

5. Set OUTPUT to USER DEFINED and enter a value of 4444 as I have

done.
6. Next set COPY to either DISC COPY (to copy the DVD exactly the
same as the commercial dvd: Menu, Scene Selection, Extras…) OR
choose MOVIE ONLY and this will copy only the movie portion of the
DVD. IF you pick MOVIE ONLY move to step 9, otherwise continue.
7. Next, decide if you want RATIO to be VARIABLE or CONSTANT. My
experience shows Variable is faster, but lower quality than
CONSTANT which takes longer and looks better.
8. Choose the AUDIO you want by clicking on the button next to the
audio options in the AUDIO/SUBTITLES window. For this particular
DVD we see AC3 6ch English (English audio track), AC3 2ch French
(French audio track) and AC3 2ch English Directors Comments. If
doing a Disc Copy you should select your language of audio AND the
Directors comments if you want to be able to hear the directors
comments when the option is chosen from the DVD menu.
9. MOVIE ONLY PEOPLE: Your window will look different. It will look
like this…

10. Notice there are 7 Titles on this DVD yet only ONE has a large amount
of Chapters and a long Duration… *19 chapters and duration of 1:55:16.
This is the MOVIE, you should select it by clicking on Title 6 once.
NOTE: your DVD may not be Title 6 so pick whichever one is the
longest in length
11. Next choose the audio you want for the Movie. Since its movie only
just choose 1 audio type and have that be your language of choice.
12. If you want to have subtitles for the movie decide, if so for this DVD
the only option is ENGLIGH. Some have other languages. Again, click
the ones you want.
13. DISC COPY and MOVIE COPY PEOPLE: Click START
14. A window will appear asking you to choose a SAVE location. Select
PATCH_DVDr as seen
15. Click Select
1 6 .DVD2ONE will now begin to process the DVD. When it shows
FINISHED quit the application.

Step 4. Open Toast Titanium 6.0.x

1. Click on DATA, then using the menu on the left hand side choose DVD-
ROM (UDF)

2 . Next, Drag the PATCH_DVDr folder from the desktop to Toast’s

Window as seen above. This will then list the files contained within
that folder in the window. Note that the DVD disk name is
PATCH_DVDr and the VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders a below the
disk name. THIS HAS TO BE, otherwise it may not play.
3. Notice also how there is a file called .DS_Store under the DVD name
and ALSO in the VIDEO_TS folder. If these are present for you,
highlight them and lick the (-) REMOVE button to take them off the
DVD. These can affect DVD playback on some settop players.
4. Click BURN

5. This window will appear and ask you to verify the Recorder you are
using (the drive) and to select a write speed for the disk. Likewise if
you enter more than 1 for NUMBER OF COPIES, after the disk is
burned and ejected all you need to do is put a new DVDr into your
drive and it will begin to burn a 2nd disk (and so on)
That’s it! You now have a DVD backup of the Commercial DVD.
Congratulations!
