1. What have you learned about the factors that contribute to cause suicide?

Suicide is a serious matter and a thing that occurs by not just simply ending one’s life.

There are a lot of reasons why a person wants to commit suicide. I’ve learned that it is hard to

distinguish the exact reason behind it. Just like what the speaker said, there are many underlying

reasons why a person tries to commit suicide and you cannot just say that it’s just because of

depression. One risk factor that many people are most commonly aware of is depression. At first,

my knowledge about suicide is that it happens because a person wants to just disappear. But as I

listened to the webinar, I’ve learned that people commit suicide because they want to end the

pain that they’re going through, but they don’t want to die.

It is important that we are aware of the factors that contribute to suicide, for it will really

help in distinguishing if a person close to us is showing some signs of attempting to do it. At the

same time, it is important for us so we can be aware of how to handle and face it. Being mindful

of the factors is one way for us to prevent someone from doing it. Through it, you will know how

you can help and be there for that person and it’ll be easier for you to figure things out.

Experiencing risk factors doesn’t necessarily mean that a person will think about

attempting to take their own life. We all have different ways of coping with challenges, and

strong family relationships and connections also help to balance out difficult or negative life

issues. The main thing is to be aware of any challenges that the people around you are facing,

keep an eye on them, and show that you are genuinely concerned.
2. As a psychology student, how can you help in preventing suicide to other people, including

yourself?

As a psychology student, I can help prevent someone from attempting suicide by

applying what I've learned about how to handle and be present when someone I know is suicidal.

First thing I should be mindful of is knowing the warning signs. Prevention involves being able

to recognize the warning signs of suicide. Being aware of the signs can help you pick out the best

thing to do with a person who wants to try to commit suicide. Suicide is a serious problem, and

any suicide threat or attempt should be taken seriously. There’s no such thing as a simple

problem, so it’s necessary that we know how to validate someone’s feelings.

Being a good listener is another way of preventing suicide. Being able to talk with a

caring friend and unburden yourself of your troubles can go a long way towards relieving the

unbearable build-up of pressure that can lead to suicidal attempts. Sometimes people just need to

let their emotions out and they just need someone who will listen. Being a good listener doesn’t

require any special skills. All you must do is be patient and accepting, but you must be reminded

that the person you’re talking to is in a sensitive situation, so you should avoid offering

simplistic solutions because it might just turn into an argument.

The best way to prevent other people and yourself from attempting suicide is to be

mindful and concerned about the struggles a person is facing. Constantly checking how a person

is doing can really go along the way. It is important to show people that they matter to you and

that you are always there for them, but as you try to look out for other people, don’t forget to

check on yourself also.
