Mid Semester Examination

The document is a mid-semester exam for a course on instrumentation and calibration. It contains two questions assessing students' understanding of key concepts: [1] defining measuring systems and comparing direct and indirect measurements, deriving equations, and calculating sensitivity; [2] distinguishing active and passive instruments, discussing null and deflection types, and identifying elements in a measuring system diagram. The exam tests comprehension of fundamental instrumentation topics through explanations, comparisons, derivations, and diagram analysis.

Level 2 (Semester 2) Mid Semester Evaluation, June 2021
Academic year 2018/2019

Course Unit: ENT2232 Instrumentation & Calibration Duration: 1 hour

Rubric/instructions to candidate of the question paper.

• Answer all two (02) questions.

• Follow the instructions state in the LMS submission page.

1.
a) Explain the meaning of measuring system.
b) Compare Direct measurement and Indirect measurement using two examples for
each.
c) Briefly describe the process involved in a measuring system using the element block
diagram.
d) Derive dimensions for the following quantities.
1
I. Kinetic Energy (K.E) 𝐾. 𝐸 = 2 𝑚𝑣 2
1 𝑞1 𝑞2
II. Electric permittivity (Ɛ0) 𝐹 = 4𝜋𝜀 ( )
0 𝑟2

III. Universal gas Constant (R) 𝑃𝑉 = 𝑛𝑅𝑇

e) A thermocouple having a sensitivity of 4.8 mV/0C has been used for the
measurement of temperature. Its output is connected to a moving coil millivoltmeter
which has a sensitivity of 10C/mV. If the length of the pointer of the instrument is 30
mm, determine the overall sensitivity of the temperature-sensing system in mm/0C
Hint: angle measurement to linear measurement can be done by converting degree to
radian; degree x (2π/360)

2.
a) Explain what is meant by:
I. active instruments, and
II. passive instruments.
Give examples of each and discuss the relative advantages of these two classes of
instruments.
b) Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of null and deflection types of measuring
instrument.
c) Explain the operation of recording instrument using two examples.
d) Indicate the essential elements of the following measuring systems shows in the
figure 1 in the form of block diagrams.
