For Consideration/discussion
1. Which of the four elements – strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats – turned out
to be the most difficult to develop? Why? Which was the easiest? Why?
Answer:
For me the most difficult part of the four elements is the – opportunities. It is because as we
consider that is coming from the environment or another entity in the community, we have no
hold when they stop doing it or continue to provide. While the easiest one is – strength.
Stregnth is very personal, that means we have its control whether to continue it or not,
whether to let it grow, share it with others or not. Even in ourselves, if we do reflections with
our personal characters, it would be easy for us to continue out strengths because it is innate
while the support of others can sometimes fail.
2. What valuable insights about your focal organization did you gain during your SWOT
analysis?
Answer:

One of the biggest mistakes people make when doing a SWOT is to turn
the Opportunities section into a big wish list of new ideas. This is very common in non-profits.
Instead of concentrating on the big list of Weaknesses and discussing how to fix them,
avoidance of anything negative prevails. The “bright ideas” flow; volunteers raise hands; and
you end up with a long list of fantasy initiatives. The meeting ends before anyone can get
to Threats; all fire power goes towards the new initiatives, and the Weaknesses are left to
fester. The four sections of a SWOT analysis should be looked at as whole. Connections, causes,
and effects between one and the others should be explored prior to any action and all actions
should be ranked.
