TEGr 112 Lesson 3.3
TEGr 112 Lesson 3.3
Lesson Summary
This lesson discusses ways of integrating art with technology and to other
subjects
Learning Outcomes
At the end of the lesson, you are expected to develop a way to integrate
technology with art and include art in another subject area
Motivation Question
Can you still remember during your elementary days when your teacher
provided you an art activity during the Science lesson or Math lesson? What
topic was it and what output have you created?
Discussion
Computer technology in the 21st century has significantly changed the
educational aspect all over the world. Students thus need to be computer
literate in order to compete academically and in their future job.
In teaching art, the use of computers makes the class more exciting.
It can be a vital tool for learning art and across the curriculum. “Art teachers
who are technologically literate are uniquely positioned to play a major role in their
schools’ attempts to restructure in the face of an ever-changing global
marketplace” – Phillip Dunn
Using computers, students can access different images and see world
arts. They can engage in a critical discussion about a masterpiece and
compare and contrast the art in varieties of culture. Students can also visit
virtual museums on websites. Computers offer interactive learning processes
that can be accessed by the students and serve as additional learning tools.

Visual arts such as painting, drawing, and even making crafts can be used to
make tedious and complicated subjects be engaging to the students.
Students are either presented with an existing art or asked to make an
object related to any discipline of their course of study. This process of
creating or observing art helps children simply absorb complex concepts.
INTEGRATION OF ART TO OTHER SUBJECTS
Life Sciences: Students can be provided with painting or objects, say
animals or trees, and made to discuss the diverse facets of the painting.
Students can be asked to make a drawing of the objects being discussed
example, a leaf. Students can also be made to observe an object (e.g., a
caterpillar or a butterfly) and made a drawing based on their observations.
Students can also be presented with different life cycle stages and express
their understanding of those stages in a visual format.
Mathematics: For younger students to remember numbers, they can be
made to color drawings of numbers. Repeating this activity will get this
imprinted in the mind of the students. Similarly, children may have to draw
with a geometric object such as a line, shapes, and shapes to teach
geometry.

22 TEGR 112: TEACHING ART IN THE ELEMENTARY GRADE
Improving the quality of learning: Because children are more engaged, this
positively impacts learning quality. Due to greater participation, the learning
stays in the children's minds long after leaving the classroom. Studies have
also shown that integrating the arts helps improve children's engagement and
significantly affects their academic performance.
