Mixture Related Problems

The lesson plan outlines how to solve mixture problems involving systems of linear equations. Students will learn to translate word problems into mathematical equations, solve the systems of equations using elimination or substitution, and check their solutions. Two example problems are provided to demonstrate solving real-world mixture problems step-by-step. Students will practice solving a third similar problem involving mixing coffees at different price points to obtain a mixture at a given price per kilo.

A. Review
Solution:
Before we go to our topic for today, let us 1.
first check your assignment. a. Let A= number of days for Arman to
finish the job alone; and
1. When Arman and Bert both work, they B= number of days for Bert to
can paint a certain house in 8 days. finish the job alone
Also, they could paint this house if 1
=part of the job done by Arman in
Arman worked 12 days and Bert A
worked 6 days. How long would it take 1 day
to paint the house alone? 1

Therefore, Arman, working alone, can
finish the job in 24 days while Bert, working
alone, can finish the same job in 12 days.

B. Lesson Proper

Again we will be using the steps in solving

systems of linear equations as we proceed to
our topic which is all about mixture-related
problems.

What are the steps in solving problems

involving systems of linear equations?
First is to choose on what variable will
represent the given data.
Second?
Translate the verbal phrases to mathematical
equations.
Third?
Solve the linear equations using the
substitution or the elimination method.
Lastly?
Check if the values are correct by substituting
the values to the original equation.

Very good. Let us consider these examples

for you to know how it is done.
1. Jimmy’s Peanut has two types of
peanut butter: Mr. Peanut which costs
Php 2.00 per gram, and King Peanut,
which costs Php7.00 per gram. How
many grams of each type of peanut
butter must Jimmy mix to create 20
grams of Sir Peanut that will cost
Php4.00 per gram?

a. Let x = the number of grams of Mr.

Peanut; and
y= the number of grams of
King Peanut.

Gram of Php. Per Amount

PB gram of pb
Mr. x 2 2x
Peanut
King y 7 7y
Peanut
Total 20 4 20(4)
b. x + y=20 eq. 1
2 x+7 y =20( 4)
2 x+7 y =80 eq. 2
c. Using the elimination method.
Multiply equation 1 by 2
( x + y=20 ) 22 x+2 y=40
2 x+7 y =80 2 x +7 y=80
−5 y=−40
y=8
Solving for x,
x + y=20
x +8=20
x=20−8
x=12
d. Check:
Eq. 1
x + y=20
12+8=20
20=20 (True)
Eq. 2
2 x+7 y =80
2(12)+ 7(8)=80
24+ 56=80
80=80 (True)
Therefore, Jimmy must mix 12 grams of
Mr. Peanut and 8 grams King Peanut to create
20 grams of Sir Peanut that will sell for
Php4.00 per gram.

2. How many ounces of 5% hydrochloric

acid and 20% hydrochloric acid must
be combined to get 10 ounces of
solution that is 12.5% hydrochloric
acid?
Ounces % Amount
of sol’n of acid
A x 5%=0.05 0.05x
B y 20%=0.2 0.2y
Total 10 12.5%=0.125 0.25(10)
a. Let x-5% hydrochloric acid
y-20% hydrochloric acid
b. x + y=10 eq. 1
0.05 x+ 0.2 y =0.125(10)
0.05 x+ 0.2 y =1.25 eq. 2
c. Solving using the elimination method,
Multiply the equation by 100 to remove
the decimal.
( 0.05 x+ 0.2 y =1.25 ) 100
5 x+ 20 y =125
Multiply the first equation by 5 and
subtract the equations.
(x + y=10)5 5 x+ 5 y =50
5 x+ 20 y =125 5 x +20 y=125
−15 y=−75
−15 y −75
=
−15 −15
y=5
Solving for x,
x + y=10
x +5=10
x=10−5
x=5
d. Check:
Eq. 1
x + y=10
5+5=10
10=10 (True)
Eq. 2
0.05 x+ 0.2 y =1.25
0.05(5)+0.2(5)=1.25
0.25+1=1.25
1.25=1.25 (True)
Since the values satisfy the equations,
therefore 5 ounces of 5% hydrochloric acid
should be added to 5 ounces of a 20%
hydrochloric acid to make 10 ounces of 12.5%
hydrochloric acid.

Kindly try number 3 in your notebook.

3. Barako coffee worth Php 300.00 per
kilo is mixed with Arabica coffee worth
Php 200.00 per kilo. How many kilos Solution:;
of each coffee should be used to obtain 3.
20 kilos of a mixture worth Php 240.00 a. Let x = the number of kilos of
per kilo? barako coffee; and
y= the number of kilos of
Arabica coffee.
Coffee Kilos of Php per Amount
coffee kg. of coffee
Barako x 300 300x
Arabica y 200 200y
Total 20 240 240(20)

b. x + y=20 eq. 1 (The total weight is

20 kilos.)
300 x+ 200 y =4 800 eq. 2 (The total
value is 4 800.)
c. Using the elimination method.
( x + y=20 ) 200 200 x+200 y =4000
300 x+ 200 y =4 800300 x +200 y=4 800
−100 x=−800
x=8
Solving for y,
x + y=20
8+ y =20
y=20−8
y=12
d. Check:
Eq. 1
x + y=20
8+12=20
20=20True
Eq. 2
300 x+ 200 y =4 800
300(8)+200( 12)=4 800
2400+2400=4 800
4800=4 800True

The mixture consists of 8 kilos of barako

coffee and 12 kilos of Arabica coffee.

C. Generalization

Again, what are the steps in solving problems

involving systems of linear equations?
The steps in solving problems involving
systems of linear equations are:
1. Choose on what variable will represent
the given data.
2. Translate the verbal phrases to
mathematical equations.

3. Solve the linear equations using the

substitution or the elimination method.

4. Check if the values are correct by

substituting the values to the original
equation.

IV. EVALUATION

Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity

Direction: Answer the problem using the steps
in solving problems. By pair in a 1 whole sheet
of paper.

1. John wants to make a 100 ml of 5%

alcohol solution mixing a quantity of a
2% alcohol solution with a 7% alcohol
solution. What are the quantities of
each of the two solutions (2% and 7%)
he has to use? Solution:
1.
a. Let x – 2% alcohol solution
y – 7% alcohol solution

Ml of % Amount
solution
A X 2%=0.02 0.02x
B Y 7%=0.07 0.07y
Total 100 5%=0.05 100(0.05)
b. x + y=100 Eq. 1
0.02 x+ 0.07 y=100(0.05)
0.02 x+ 0.07 y=5 Eq. 2
c. Solving by elimination.
Multiply the equation by 100 to remove
the decimal.
( 0.02 x+ 0.07 y=5 ) 100
2 x+5 y =500
Multiply 2 in equation1,
2(x + y=100)2 x +2 y=200
2 x+7 y =500 2 x +7 y=500
−5 y=−300
y=60 ml
Solving for x,
x + y=100
x +60=100
x=100−60
x=40 ml
d. Check:
Eq. 1
x + y=100
60+ 40=100
100=100True
Eq. 2
2 x+7 y =500
2 ( 40 ) +7 ( 60 ) =500
80+ 420=500
500=500True

Since the values satisfy the equations,

therefore John has to use 40 ml of 2% alcohol
solution with a 60 ml of 7% alcohol solution.

V. ASSIGNMENT
