Properties of Rectangle

The lesson plan discusses teaching students about the properties of rectangles. It includes objectives, references, materials, strategies, and a detailed procedure for the lesson. The procedure involves motivating students with a puzzle activity, defining a rectangle, listing and illustrating its seven properties, using the properties to solve problems, and assigning practice problems for homework.

III.PROCEDURE

Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity

A. Motivation

Before we are going to discuss about the first

special parallelogram which is rectangle, let us
first have an activity.

I will be grouping you according to the

column where you belong. So there are 2 Answer:
columns in one group. You will be given 1. Philippine flag
puzzled pieces, and within 3 minutes you are 2. Chocolate bar
going to assemble these puzzled pieces to form 3. Door
a figure. After completing the puzzle, you are 4. Philippine money
going to identify the figure formed. 5. Billiard table

B. Lesson Proper

Did you like our activity?

Yes Ma’am.
What can you say to our activity?
Challenging and exciting.
What are the similarities of those
examples?
The shapes formed by the figures are rectangle.
Okay. We will be using your knowledge
on your previous activity as we go on with our
lesson for today.

First that we are going to do is to define a

rectangle. Again, what is a rectangle?
A rectangle is a parallelogram with four right
angles.
Very good. Let us have an illustration of
a rectangle HOPE.
H O

E P
So, there are 7 properties of a rectangle.
The five properties are the same as the
properties of a parallelogram.
Again, what is the first property?
Opposite sides are parallel.
And what are the opposite sides that are
parallel in the rectangle HOPE?
HE||OP and HO||EP.
That is right. How about the second
property? Opposite sides are congruent.

In the same figure, the opposite sides that

are congruent are?
HO&EP and HE&OP.
Very good. The next property?
Opposite angles are congruent.

Who would like to illustrate the

property?

That is correct. The fourth property?

Consecutive angles are supplementary.
What is the sum of their measures when they
are supplementary?
180°.
In the same figure, what is the fourth property
implies?
H O

E P

m EHO+m HOP=180°
m HOP+m OPE=180°
m OPE+m PEH=180°
m PEH+m EHO=180°
Very good. Next property is that diagonals
bisect each other. And what are the diagonals
of the rectangle HOPE?
H O

E P

OE and HP.
And again, what do we mean by bisect?
Bisect means dividing the diagonals into two
equal parts.

Let us name the point of intersection as point

S. And those parts are?
HS=SP and ES=SO.
Who would like to tell the sixth property?
A diagonal separates a parallelogram into two
congruent triangles.
In the same rectangle, which is rectangle
HOPE what are triangles that are congruent?
OHE≅ OPE
HAP≅ POH
That is correct. The next property is that all
interior angles are right. When we say interior
angle, it is an angle formed inside of a plane
figure. So, in our rectangle HOPE it has how
many interior angles?
The rectangle HOPE has 4 interior right
angles.

Very good. And what are those?

H, O, P, and E.
Absolutely. And what is the last property?
Diagonals are congruent.
In the rectangle HOPE, the diagonals that are
congruent are AO ≅ HP.

Let us try to answer the following using the

different properties of a rectangle.

L I

E K

1. LI||___.
2. LK=___.
3. L≅____.
4. EK=___.
5. m LKE=____.
6. m K=____.
7. m ELS=____.
8. If LE=3x+2 and IK=x+18, then x=___.
9. If LK=2x+5 and LS=x+12, then
x=____ and LK=_____.
10. If m LIK=3x-20 and m Answer:
IKE=2x+40, then x=____ and m 1. EK

10. x=32
m LIK=44°

C. Generalization

Again, what is a rectangle?

A rectangle is a parallelogram with four right
angles.
How about the different properties of a
rectangle?
The different properties of a rectangle are:
1. Opposite sides are parallel.
2. Opposite sides are congruent.
3. Opposite angles are congruent.
4. Consecutive angles are supplementary.
5. Diagonals bisect each other.
6. A diagonal separates a parallelogram
into two congruent triangles.
7. All interior angles are right.
8. Diagonals are congruent.
