7.1Summary

The study titled “Factors Affecting Reading Comprehension

and its Impact on the Academic Performance of Grade 8 learners

in Claver National High School” sought to answer the three (3)

problems and one hypothesis. The indicators of different

factors were students’ attitude towards reading, parents’

iv
educational attainment and perception of students towards their

teachers’ competency in teaching reading; the level of academic

performances which is the general average of grade 8 learners

in Claver National High School as well as the significant

relationship between the two variables.

The study used the descriptive-correlational method of

research and involved (222) respondents from Grade 8 learners.

The study used purposive and random sampling. The researchers

used purposive and convenience sampling because only those

students who belongs to frustration level of reading

comprehension will serve as the respondents and those students

will be randomly selected to determine who will be the

respondents of this study. Also, it was convenience because

students who were available during the conduct of survey will

be the respondents.

The statistical treatment used by the study is weighted

mean and Pearson rho co-relational. Weighted mean was used to

determine the average mean of the indicators. Pearson rho co-

relational was used to determine the relationship between the

Factors Affecting Reading Comprehension and the Level of

Academic Performance among Grade 8 learners in Claver National

High School.
7.2 Summary of Findings

Based on analysis and interpretation of data, study

revealed the following findings:

1. The extent of Different Factors has the overall mean of

2.98 with a verbal interpretation of “Influential”.

2. The extent of level of academic performance has the

overall mean of 2.55 with a verbal interpretation of

“Satisfactory”.

3. There is a significant relationship between the factors

affecting reading comprehension and the level of academic

performance of Grade 8 learners in Claver National High School.

7.3 Conclusion

Based on the findings the following conclusions are made:

1. The study shows that students attitude towards

reading, parents educational attainment, and perception of

students towards their teachers competency in teaching reading

are “Influential”. It proves that that these factors have an

impact on the academic performance in terms of English subject.

The indicators of the said factors can really affect the

students’ academic performance.

2. The level of academic performance of the respondents

in Grade 8 learners of Claver National High School shows that

most of the students in Claver National High School has good

and has majority passing grades in terms of their English

subject.

3. The relationship between the two variables, the

factors affecting reading comprehension and academic

performance among selected Grade 8 learners in Claver National

High School is significant thus reject the null hypothesis.

7.4 Recommendation

Based on the findings and conclusion display from the

study, the following recommendations are offered for

consideration.

Students. Students must give importance to their reading

comprehension for it is a requirement for him/her to understand

what they have read in order to attain success in life.

Teachers. Teacher as a mentor and a second mother must

monitor and teach their students of the different strategies in

order to develop the students reading comprehension.

Parents. Parents must encourage and help their children in

everything they do particularly in developing reading

comprehension since they are their first teacher.

School Administration. The school should implement reading

interventions in order to lessen the number of students that

belongs to frustration level in reading comprehension.

Future Researchers. If they aim to conduct the study

related to this, they must have the eagerness and the courage

to explore and pursue this research. They should also ensure

that the respondents are willing to provide necessary data

needed to complete the research. It should be practical and

realistic. Future researchers may explore other factors that

may have correlation with academic performance.
