The Adverb FORMATION OF ADVERBS

An adverb modifies or adds meaning to a verb. Adverbs can be formed from adjectives by adding the suffix -ly but
i.e. It tells how, when or where the action was performed. spelling changes are necessary.
Example:
a. The man spoke confidently/
(Adverb of Manner - how) 1. If an adjective ends with “y”, change the “y” to “I”, before adding
“ly”.
b. Mummy took us there before/ (Adverb of time - hearty - speedy
when)

c. Our friends stood nearby/ (Adverb of place - where) 2. If the adjective ends with “e”, drop the “e” before adding “ly”.

Adverbs also modify adjectives and other adverbs:

1. Adverbs of Degree - tell to what extent or degree a thing is 3. Some adjectives are not changed, just add the suffix “ly”.
