scales and historical perspectives?”
Skill 10: Awareness of spiritual laws: “What fundamental and lawful spiritual principles seem to
apply to our lives and our world?”
Skill 11: Experience of transcendent oneness: “What moments of awe, wonder, oneness with
the universe, or non-ordinary consciousness have I experienced?”

conscious intention?”
Skill 14: Living your purpose and values: “Do I make values-driven, purpose-driven choices,
even when no one is around to know about it?”

actions?”
Skill 20: Being a calming, healing presence: “Can I release my attachment to certain outcomes,
my judgments, and my need to control the situation so that I can offer calm and healing?
Skill 21: Being aligned with the ebb and flow of life: “Am I aware of the energy flows and
temporal rhythms in my body, in others, and in life itself, and am I able to attune with this
energy?”

This kind of “self-appraisal” provides a kind of map that can help us discover areas of potential
growth, where we might direct our attention, energy, and guidance from teachers and spiritual
friends. Spiritual training such as this is nurtured in the context of a spiritual community, where
others share this intention for waking up and growing up.
