CHAPTER ONE

1.1 INTRODUCTION

The aim and objective of students industrial work experience is to expose the

students to the practical aspect of different courses of study while in the

Polytechnics or university.

The Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) was introduced by the

Ministry of Science and Technology, Federal Republic of Nigeria in the year

1973 and was incorporated into the programmed of tertiary institutions in partial

fulfillment of the requirements for the award of a National Diploma and Bachelor

of Technology degree in higher institutions.

1.2 PURPOSE OF SIWES

The scheme is designed to expose students to the reality of their profession

outside the theory being taught in class. It is aimed at exposing students to

machines and equipment, professional work methods, and ways of safeguarding

work areas and workers in industries and organizations.

1
1.3 OBJECTIVES OF THE SCHEME

Provides an avenue for students to acquire industrial skills and experience in

their course of study.

 Prepares students for industrial work situation they are likely to meet after

graduation.

 Exposes students to work methods and techniques in handling equipment

and machinery that may not be available in their institutions.

 Students learn how to apply the latest technology in their professional

callings

 Helps to develop entrepreneurship skills in the students.

 Exposes students to critical skills, quality control measures and safety

regulations in their field of work.

1.4 AIMS OF SIWES

 Makes the transition from school to the world of work easier and thus

enhance students' contact for later job placement,

 Provides students with opportunity to apply their knowledge in real work

situation, thereby bridging the gap between theory and practice,

2
 Enlist and strengthen employer's involvement in the entire educational

process and prepare students for employment in industry and commerce,

 Another primary purpose of SIWES, according to Ogundele (1992), is the

mass production of competent workers.

CHAPTER TWO

2.1PRINTERS

A printer is an external hardware output device that takes the electronic

data stored on a computer or other device and generates a hard copy.

 How to use the Do metrics printer using of inject printers to print out document.

 Learned how to share printer among the staff on the network.

 Installation of Epson printer’s drivers and how to operate printers.

 The functions of cartridge and fuser or rear side in the laser printer.

 How to operate input devices on the printer.

4
2.2 SOFTWARE, DISK AND STORAGE IN THE COMPUTER

Software is a collection of instructions that tell a computer how to work.

This is in contrast to hardware, from which the system is built and actually

performs the work.

The types of software are:

 Operating system and

 System software

Storage On a modern computer, storage comes in two forms: temporary

and long-term: Temporary storage: Supplied as memory, or RAM. Memory is

where the processor does its work, where programs run, and where information is

stored while it's being worked on Long-term storage: Provided by storage media.

5
The unit of conversion

Unit Description Example

Bit 1 or 0 A single pixel in a black and white picture

Byte 8 bits A single character

Kilobyte 1024 bytes A small email is about 2 kilobytes

Megabyte 1024 kilobytes MP3 files take up about 1 megabyte per minute

Gigabyte 1024 megabytes 1 gigabyte can hold about 300 MP3 songs

Terabyte 1024 gigabytes 1 terabyte can hold about 100 DVD-quality films

2.3NETWORK

I learned the best network connection to system that is most common

topology and I also understood how to connect cable wire antenna to router in the

computer system.

6
 I learned different classification of network and which onethe organization use star

because all nodes connect to hub.

 I learned the type of wireless networking and which one the company uses and the

V.G A cables used by the company.

 I learned different classifications of network and which satiation and coloured for

the twist pair cable cross and street through cables.

2.4 CORELDRAW GRAPHIC PACKAGE

CorelDraw is a vector graphics editor developed and marketed by Corel

Corporation. It is also the name of the Corel graphics suite, which includes the

bitmap-image editor Corel Photo-Paint as well as other graphics-related

programs.

7
 I was introduced to CorelDraw graphic package where I can edit my picture or

make some graphics, to the background of the picture of any image.

 I was thought how to use the ribbon tabs in the Corel draw

 How to import and export file in CorelDraw and also how to remove background

in CorelDraw.

 How to insert a new background, and a general knowledge on how to cut and edit

pictures in the CorelDraw.

2.5 THE MESH GRID TOOL

Gradient Meshes allow for very flexible and detailed application of color to

objects. A Gradient Mesh creates a grid inside the object that follows the

contour. The gradient mesh tool breaks any vector shape into a grid, and every

point in the grid can be assigned a color. The effect is a sophisticated and

smooth graphics.

8
 I learned how to fill the object by blending multiple colors or shades

arranged over a mesh grid.

 I know how to edit a curved object or text character and the pick tool which

allow me to select or transform object.

 I learned to use the visual segment delete tool-remove overlapping segment

in the object and also the zoom tool.

 I learned how to use the various tools on the mesh grid suit like the pan tool

which allow you to drag hidden areas of a drawing into view without

changing the zoom.

2.6 INTERNET SERVICES

Internet Services allows us to access huge amount of information such as text,

graphics, sound and software over the internet.

 I learned about the internet services like Broadband, wireless system and

edge modem with 4G network service.

 I learned how to download drivers missing in a computer from the internet,

uninstall and install drivers pack solution in the computer.

 I also learned the 4G service which helps me to form quick emails, to

download and upload attachment and perform live streaming and mobile

TV and the social network.

9
 I learned about GSM network operation stereo to provide the correct

technology at a reasonable price.

Following diagram shows the four different categories of Internet Services.

CHAPTER THREE

3.1 RECOMMENDATION

First of all, I commend Holnet Café And Computer Training Centre Tafawa

Balewa Bauchi state for their effort in improving Computer in Tafawa Balewa.

Since SIWES is a federal government approved, there should be budget for the

department students during SIWES exercise.

3.2 CONCLUSIONAt the end of SIWES programed, I am supposed to have practical

experience and it has bridge the gap between the theoretical knowledge and the

practical knowledge for me, I also charge the polytechnic governing body and

industrial trust fund (ITF) founded by the federal government to continue as there

is still room for improvement. Science technology is the way forward and it is of

great benefit to the nation.

This industrial training has afforded me the basic practical and

theoretical knowledge that not have gotten from the lecture class. It also gives me

the opportunity to have a feel of what it would be after graduation when I start

working.
