GRAMMAR

A/ THE PAST SIMPLE


1. The simple past tense of To be
Form:
Affirmative: S + was/ were + C (N/ ADJ / ADV)
Negative: S + was / were + not + C
Interrogative: Was / Were + S + C?

Example: They were students two years ago.


I was not at home yesterday.

2. The simple past tense of ordinary verbs:


Form:
Affirmative: S+ V-ed/2 + O
Negative: S + didn’t + V + O
Interrogative: Did + S+ V + O?

Example: I went to school yesterday.


He didn’t go to Hanoi last year.
Did your parents go on a picnic last week?

Usage: thì quá khứ đơn được dung để diễn tả:


- Hành động đã xảy ra vào một thời điểm xác định trong quá khứ
Eg. Tom visited Vietnam last summer.
Mozart died in 1791.
- Hành động đã xảy ra trong quá khứ, nhưng nay đã hoàn toàn chấm dứt
Eg: He worked work) in that bank for four years, but now he is working for an
international bank.
- Một chuỗi sự việc nối tiếp nhau trong quá khứ
Eg: Yesterday morning, John got up at 7 o’clock, had breakfast and went to
school.
- Thói quen trong quá khứ
Eg: When I was young, I often went (go) fishing.
* các phó từ thường gặp: yesterday, last + N (last year, last night, …..), N+ ago ( 2 days
ago, 5 months ago ,…..)

B/ WISH CLAUSES
1. Future wish
S + WISH + S + WOULD / COULD (not) + VERB
Eg: He will have an exam tomorrow.
 He wishes he wouldn’t have an exam tomorrow.
Eg: I can’t swim as well as her.
 I wish I could swim as well as her.
2. Present wish:
S + WISH + S + VERB ed/2//// (be=> WERE)
Eg: I don’t know John’s phone number.
 I wish I knew John’s phone number.

Lưu ý: chúng ta dùng động từ BE là WERE cho bất kỳ chủ ngữ nào
Eg: I wish I were you
I wish my life were more interesting.
3. Past wish
S + WISH + S + VERB (past perfect)
had Ved/3
Eg: She didn’t succeed in the final exam.
 She wishes she had succeeded in the final exam.

Notes: wish = If only

+ If only he wouldn’t have an exam tomorrow.


(= He wishes he wouldn’t have an exam tomorrow.)
+ If only I knew her name.
(= I wish …………………………………………………………………)
+ If only you hadn’t said that.
(= I wish ………………………………………………………………)

USED TO + V - infinitive (đã từng) : diễn đạt tình trạng, thói quen trong quá khứ mà nay
không còn nữa.
Eg: Nick used to smoke, but he gave it up.
We used to play that game when we were young.
There used to be a cinema here, but they knocked it down.
