these things gave him the ideas f o r his writing. In 1897 he went to
the f a r northern part o f North America to look f o r gold. Later he
went to the Yukon, where he was fam ou s f o r his story telling. The
time he spent there was very important. It taught him how hard it is
f o r people and animals to live in a cold and dangerous place. Later
in his life, this lesson helped him create the characters and stories
f o r his most popular hooks, like “The Call o f the Wild”, and “White

In the early 1900s London and his wife, Charmian, moved to
a ranch in California. They raised animals, such as bulls and horses,

London was fo r ty years old when he died in 1916. His ranch is

The She-Wolf

T
here are parts of North America that are very, very cold in
winter. This is why not many people live there. The land is
white with snow and there is ice on the rivers. It is so cold that
it is difficult for anything to stay alive.
Two men. Bill and Henry, were on their way to Fort McGurry
to bury Lord Alfred. Six dogs pulled a sled that carried his body.
It was almost night-time when they heard the first howl. Bill
and Henry stopped the sled and looked behind them. All they
could see was white snow.
Then there was another howl.
“It’s wolves, Henry, and they’re close.”
“They’re hungry. There’s not much food out here for them.W e’d
better stop and light a fire to keep them away. It’s getting dark
anyway.”
The two men found a place in the forest where they could
sleep for the night. Bill took out six fish from a box to feed the
dogs, but when he came back, he looked confused.
“Henry, how many dogs have we got?”
“Six.”
“But I saw seven just now when I went to feed them!”
“You must be tired. There are only six.”
In the morning, when the men were ready to move again, they
noticed that one o f the dogs was missing.
“Fatty’s not here. He ran away.”
“But where could he go out here?”
“Maybe the wolves killed him, Henry. They need food.”
“And if w e’re not careful, they’ll eat us, too.”

8
C hap ter 1

The men continued with five dogs. They went as fast as they
could, hut Fort McGurry was still som e days away. The next night,
when they stopped to camp, they heard the wolves again.
“They're staying close, Bill,”
“And w e’ve only got one gun and three bullets. For the first
time in my life I wish I had more bullets.”
The men were tired and slept deeply. In the morning, another
dog, Frog, was missing. The men were very surprised because
Frog was a clever dog, not like Fatty.
“Why did Frog leave the camp, when he knew that the wolves
were out there?”
Then they saw the reason. There, in the distance, in the white
snow, stood a she-wolf. But she didn’t look exactly like a wolf.
She was bigger and looked a bit like a sled-dog. Her fur was gray,
but it looked red when she moved.
“There’s your answrer, Bill. That she-w olf com es to the camp at
night and the male dogs follow her into the forest. Then the wolves
kill our dogs.”
“Well, I'm going to shoot her the first chance I get. We can't
lose any more dogs.”
They tied the dogs up at night but they still escaped. When
there were only three dogs, the wolves did not hide any more.
They followed the men out into the open - the she-wolf leading
them. The men were afraid, but neither o f them said anything.
Then, O ne Ear, a sled-dog, escaped in the day. He followed the
she-w olf into the trees. Bill took the gun and ran after them.
“That’s it! I'm going to stop that she-w olf now!”
One Ear ran after the she-w olf into the forest where the other
wolves were waiting. Bill followed them. Henry heard O ne Ear
cry out in pain, and then he heard a gunshot. Then another gunshot.
10
C hap ter 1

And a third one. He knew Bill had no more bullets. The wolves
howled. Henry knew that he was now alone. There was nothing
he could do to save his friend. He had no gun - and no bullets.
C h ap ter 2

hlenry Is Alone
enry continued alone.H e put two straps from the sled over

H his shoulders and helped the last two dogs pull the sled.
When night cam e Henry stopped and built a fire. He had a lot o f
firew ood.The dogs stayed close to him when they slept because
they, too, were afraid of the forest now.
“I understand you. Stay close to me. Fort McGurry is still far
away but we'll try to get there together.”
Henry did not sleep much. The last two dogs growled whenever
the wolves moved closer and kept him awake. Henry could see
the wolves’ red eyes in the darkness. When they got too close,
Henry had to do something. He picked up a burning piece of
wood from the fire and threw it at them.
“Take that! I’ll burn you if you get any closer!”
In the morning, Henry saw that there was no firewood on the
sled.
“My God, those wolves stole the firewood! They know how to
kill a man! I didn’t think they were so clever!”
Henry knew he did not have much time before the wolves
attacked him. He decided to leave Lord Alfred’s coffin in a tree
and com e back for it later.
The journey was much faster now that the sled was empty.
They went into another forest, and Henry stopped to cut som e
w'ood and build a fire for the night. But the wolves were hungry
again. Henry threw burning wood at them to keep them away.
The wolves went away but cam e back immediately. This happened
a few times until Henry got very tired.
He went to sleep and did not hear the dogs growl anymore.
When he w oke up the she-w olf had her teeth around his arm.

12
C h ap ter 2

The other wolves were ready to attack him when he jumped into
the fire and started kicking and throwing the burning wood all
around him. It worked. The wolves ran away. When Henry looked
for the dogs, he could not find them anywhere.
The next m orning, Henry saw the hungry w olves m oving
around him again. They knew that he was now completely alone.
“You think you’ve got me, uh? You’ll see!”
Henry knew that fire was his only weapon. He carried a burning
piece o f wood with him wherever he went. W hen night came, he
built a circle of fire around him and sat in the middle. The wolves
sat outside this ring of fire - waiting. Henry could see the she-wolf
looking at him. He saw her white fangs. She looked like she was
laughing at him. She looked up at the m oon and gave a great
howl.Then the other wolves howled.
In the end, Henry was too tired to even feel afraid.
“That’s it! You win! I’m going to sleep. Do what you want. I
don’t care any more.”

He woke up in the morning, and something was wrong. The

fire was out, but the wolves were not there. Was he dreaming? He
heard dogs barking, and then he saw three men on sleds. They
stopped next to him.
“Are you one o f Lord Alfred’s men?”
“Yes. Am I glad to see you!”
“Where is Lord Alfred?”
“He’s in a tree. Dead. In a b o x ”

t w as the sh e-w o lf w ho heard the m en ’s v oices and their

I sled-dogs, and it was the she-w olf who was the first to leave
Henry’s circle o f fire. The rest o f the wolves left when the men
got closer and then followed her trail.
The she-w olf was different from the other wolves. She was
faster than them and she knew more about humans. That is why
she led the pack and that is why the other wolves did what she
did. But the weather stayed cold and they could not find food,
so the pack began to separate. The she-w olf left with O ne Eye,
an older wolf.
The she-w olf and O ne Eye traveled many miles together. They
found rabbits and a m oose to eat. They shared all the food they
found. After a few weeks, the w eather began to change. The ice
on the Mackenzie River melted and slowly the snow disappeared.
The sh e-w olf started looking for som ething. O ne Eye did not
know what it was but he followed her.
O ne day, the she-wolf found what she was looking for - a small
cave near the river. O ne Eye did not understand. He thought she
was just tired, so he left her alone and went to hunt for food. But
w hen he cam e back, he heard strange sounds in the cave. And
then he knew - he was a father! The she-w olf had five cubs, three
males and two females. All of the cubs looked like their mother,
except for one male, which was all gray, just like O ne Eye.
Wolves have many cubs, but not many live. All of the cubs died
except for the gray one.The she-w olf and One Eye did everything
they could to keep him alive. O ne day O ne Eye went to hunt for
food but was attacked by a lynx and died. Animals kill or die. That
is life in the Wild.

16
C h ap ter 3

After a few weeks the gray cub began to leave the cave. He
learned to look for food along the river and drink from its waters.
But he wanted to learn more about the world, so he began to
explore the forest. He smelled and heard different things there.
Everything was very interesting.
O ne day the cub sm elled som ething new. Fire and sm oke!
When he got closer, he saw five Indians sitting around a fire. These
creatures were new to the cub, just like everything else. O ne of
them cam e close to him .The gray cub was interested, but afraid.
The hair on his back stood on end and he showed the man his
small white fangs.
“Look at his fangs!”
The Indian tried to pet the cub but it bit his hand. The man
hit the cub and it cried out.The other Indians laughed. The more
the cub cried, the more the Indians laughed. Suddenly, they stopped.
They heard something. It was the she-wolf. She cam e and stood
over her cub and growled at the m en.The Indians moved back
and one of them called out:
“Riche!”
The she-w olf stopped growling and turned.
“It’s Riche! She ran away last year when we had no food. Maybe
sh e’s living with the wolves now.”
The gray cub did not understand any of this, but he saw his
mother lower her head and wag her tail. She walked slowly up
to the Indian who called her Riche and he petted her head gently.

White Fang and the Indians

he Indian who petted Kiche was called Gray Beaver. Kiche
T was his dog and he was interested in her cub.
"His father must be a wolf. Kiche is half-dog and half-wolf
so the cu b ’s more wolf than dog, Gray Beaver”
“I’ll keep him as a dog and lie’ll grow up like a dog.”
“Will you give him a name?”
“He bit me with those white fangs so I'll call him 'White Fang’.”
The Indians took Kiche and White Fang back to their camp.
White Fang saw tepees for the first time. He saw women, children
- and dogs. But the dogs attacked Kiche and White Fang so the
Indians separated them. Dogs and wolves are not friends. Now
White Fang also knew that dogs were not his friends.
Kiche stayed tied to a tree next to Gray Beaver’s tepee because
she could kill the others dogs if there was a fight. She was bigger
and stronger than them. But White Fang was free to walk around.
The dogs stayed away from him, except for one - Lip-lip. He liked
to light with White Fang, but White Fang was still too small to
fight well, so Lip-lip always won.
One day,White Fang found a way to beat Lip-lip. He let Lip-lip
chase him. When they were close to Kiche, she caught Lip-lip with
her teeth. After that. Lip-lip also stayed away from White Fang.
White Fang grew up in the Indians’ camp, but he wanted to
return to the wild and live like the wolves. It was Kiche who made
him stay. She knew how hard it was in the wild and that they
would have more food and safety with the Indians.
One day, one of Gray Beaver’s friends,Three Eagles, prepared
to leave the camp. He was going on a long hunting trip. He took
a gun, his tepee, som e blankets and food. But he needed a good
C h ap ter 4

dog with him, so Gray Beaver let him take Kiche.

White Fang did not understand any o f this o f course, but when
he saw his mother in Three Eagles’s canoe, he jumped into the
water after them. Gray Beaver pulled White Fang from the water,
but he tried to follow his mother again. Gray Beaver had to fight
W hite Fang to make him stay. Finally, w hen Three Eagles and
Kiche disappeared,White Fang looked up at the sky and howled.

The Call of the Wild

S
lowly White Fang learned to live without his mother. Gray
Beaver's wife, Kloo-kooch, and his son, Mit-sah, took care o f
White Fang, and soon he felt that they were his family.
As White Fang was growing up, he sometimes thought about
freedom. Fie felt lonely. None of the dogs liked him because he
was stronger and faster than they were. So, when they attacked
him, he hurt them badly. Fiowever, White Fang liked living with
the humans. He enjoyed lying by the fire and eating the food
Gray Beaver and his family gave him.
One day, White Fang learned something more about himself
and his new family. He and Mit-sah were in the forest. A group of
other Indian boys cam e up to Mit-sah and began talking to him.
“You’re on our land now. Go back to where you came from!”
“The forest is free. I can go wherever I want!”
One of the boys pushed Mit-sah and he pushed back. They
began to fight. White Fang did not understand, but his whole body
shook with anger. O ne o f the boys was going to hit Mit-sah with
a club. When White Fang saw this, he bit that boy and attacked
the others. They all ran away in fear, shouting,
“Wolf! Wolf!”
Mit-sah ran back to camp and told everyone the story. White
Fang thought that Gray Beaver was going to hit him for biting a
human. He was very surprised when Gray Beaver gave him a
plate full of meat.
“You’re a true fighter! I realized that the first time I tried to
touch you. You look after us and we look after you.”
White Fang did not understand the words. He only knew what
he felt. He did not like it when anybody tried to hurt his family.
C h ap ter 5

He loved this family and wanted to protect them.

Summer ended, and the Indian tribe had to move on. In the
fall, they hunted animals so they could have food to eat in the
winter. White Fang watched the Indians take down their tepees
and put everything into their canoes. Gray Beaver and his family
were very busy. They forgot about White Fang and White Fang
thought this was the time for him to return to the wild. He waited
until they were all down by the river and then he ran and ran.
He felt alive! He heard Gray Beaver and Mit-sah calling his name.
•White Fang!”
“White Fang!”
W hite Fang hid until he could not hear them anymore. He
wanted to live free like all wolves, but the sound of those voices
made him sad. That family was good to him. He could not forget
them.

The White IS/lan

hite Fang traveled for two days, alone. He enjoyed running

W and hunting, but winter was com ing and it was difficult to
find food. So, he went back to the Indians’ camp. The only thing
left there now was burned wood from their fires. White Fang lay
down where he used to when he was living with Gray Beaver
and his family. The memory o f them cam e back to him. It was a
mistake to leave them. He got up and decided to find them.
Gray Beaver, Mit-sah and Kloo-kooch did not follow the rest
o f the Indians right away. They stayed d o se to the river near their
old village and hunted, hoping to find White Fang again. O ne day.
Gray Beaver and Mit-sah saw a m oose. They followed it quietly
down the river, ready to shoot their arrow s.Then, from the trees
cam e a gray wolf. It attacked and killed the m oose for them. It
happened so fast, it took them a few seconds to realize who it
was.
“White Fang!”
The wolf walked slowly towards them with his head down,
thinking that Gray Beaver was going to hit him for leaving. Again,
he was surprised when Gray Beaver touched his head gently.
“There is no other wolf like you,W hite Fang. I know you want
to live in the wild, but you can stay with us for as long as you
want.”
White Fang was happy again with the Indians. Mit-sah taught
him how to pull a sled.
“White Fang, I’ll put you in the front because I know you're
stronger and faster than the dogs.”
The dogs still did not like White Fang, but this did not bother
him anymore. He lived for Mit-sah and Gray Beaver. The dogs and

28
C hap ter 6

other humans were unimportant to him, and if they tried to hurt

him or his family, he would fight them to the death.
The years passed and during the winter, the Indians made
hats, gloves and shoes from animal skins and fur. In the spring,
they sold them to the white m en at Fort Yukon. The first time
White Fang saw a white man he thought they were more powerful
than the Indians because they had guns and the Indians seem ed
afraid o f them.
White Fang traveled alone with Gray Beaver to Fort Yukon. In
those days, men cam e to look for gold, and they got to Fort Yukon
by boat. The large boats on the river looked amazing to White
Fang. When the boats landed, the white men got off, along with
their guns and dogs.Their dogs immediately attacked White Fang
but he beat them easily. At first, the white men thought White Fang
was a dog.
“What kind o f dog is that?”
“How much do you want for that dog?”
Gray Beaver did not answer their questions. He simply said
the ‘dog' was not for sale. For one thing, he had a lot of money
from the things he sold. One man thought he could take White
Fang away from the Indian. His name was Smith, but everyone
called h im ‘Beauty'.This was a joke, because this man was really
very ugly. He was a small man with a horrible face, and he hated
everyone.
"I know what Indians like,” he said to him self,“and I'm going
to get that dog, one way or another!”

29
C h ap ter 7

Beauty Smith
eauty Smith was a horrible man, and White Fang didn’t like

B him. He cam e to Gray Beaver’s tepee one day with a bottle

o f whiskey. W hite Fang stood up and growled, ready to attack.
“It’s O.K., White Fang - He’s a friend.”
White Fang sat down and watched the ugly man carefully.
“I thought you might like to have a drink with me. It gets cold
at night, and this keeps you warm.”
At first Gray Beaver did not like whiskey, but he began to like
the way it m ade him feel. O ne drink made him want more, and
every night Beauty Smith cam e with a new' bottle. Finally, Beauty
Smith told Gray Beaver he could get him a box o f whiskey to
take hom e with him. When he brought it to him, Gray Beaver was
surprised at the price.
“Three hundred dollars? That’s too much!”
“Well, that’s for the bottles you and I drank together too. You
didn’t think they were free, did you?”
“I need to take this money back to my family. We can ’t live
without it!”
“If you don’t pay me, I’ll go to the police.”
Gray Beaver was worried.
“I’ll tell you what. Give me the wolf-dog and keep the m oney”
Gray Beaver now knew that this was all a trick and that he
was a fool. He had no choice. He had to bring that money home,
and so he agreed.
White Fang, o f course, did not understand the m en’s words,
but when Beauty' Smith came to take him, he attacked him and
tried to bite his hand.
“Put a rope around that animal or he'll kill me!”

32
C hap ter 7

“Don't worry, I'll take care o f him.”

Gray Beaver put a leather lead around White Fang's neck, and
Beauty Smith took him and tied him to a tree outside his cabin.
White Fang bit through the lead and ran back to Gray Beaver, but
then they put a metal chain around the wolf-dog. Now he could
not escape.
W'hite Fang could not understand why he was with Beauty
Smith, and he did not like it. Beauty Smith beat him with a club
and did not feed him. White Fang did not attack him again, but
Beauty Smith did not trust the animal, so he put him in a cage.
Beauty Smith brought other men and dogs to look at White
Fang in his cage. The men laughed and this made White Fang
very angry. The one thing White Fang hated was men laughing at
him. He thought that if he was ever free again, and a man laughed
at him like that, he would kill him.

33
C h ap ter 8

Weed on Scott
eauty Smith had a big, cruel plan for making m oney with
B White Fang and made him angry on purpose. O ne day, he
took White Fang and put him in a pen. Many men cam e and then
a dog was put in the pen with White Fang. The men held money
in their hands.
“O.K., who thinks the dog can beat my wolf? I’m taking all
bets!”
The men exchanged m oney and then watched. White Fang
destroyed the first dog he fought in two minutes. The m en were
wild with excitement. Other, bigger, m eaner dogs cam e and White
Fang beat them all. He used all the anger he felt for white men
against the other animals. Every animal he fought was Beauty
Smith in White Fang’s mind.
The men put in two, and som etim es three, dogs against White
Fang, but he still beat them. White Fang becam e famous. Every
man around Fort Yukon wanted to see him fight. Beauty Smith
made lots o f money.
Then, one day, an old man cam e out o f the crowd o f men with
a strange-looking dog. It wras a small bulldog named Cherokee.
“O.K., Cherokee. Show this wolf what you can do.”
White Fang did not attack immediately as he usually did - and
this dog did not attack him either. The men, as usual, wanted the
other dog to win.
“Come on, Cherokee! Get him!”
The bulldog walked slowly towards White Fang. When he was
close,W hite Fang bit him.The dog was hurt, but he continued his
slow w alk, follow ing W hite Fang round the pen. W hite Fang
continued to attack and bite the dog, but the dog’s skin was thick

36
C hap ter 8

and White Fang could not hurt it badly. Then something happened

which had never happened to White Fang before. He fell. White
Fang was usually so fast that he could jump and attack and always
stay on his feet. But this dog was too small, and he fell over it
and onto his back. The bulldog got White Fang by the neck. White
Fang tried to escape, but this dog did not let him go. He held on,
biting harder and hurting White Fang until he could not move.
The men were very excited.
“He’s got him now!”
“Kill him, Cherokee! Kill him!”
Just as Cherokee was about to kill White Fang, two men broke
through the crowd and entered the pen.
“Hey, what are you doing? Are you crazy?”
“You beasts!”
The man who spoke was tall, thin and well-dressed. His face
was red from riding through the snow. The men at Fort Yukon
thought he was going to call the police, so they said nothing
because dogfights were illegal.
“Is he still alive, Matt?”
“Yes, Mr Scott, but we have to get this bulldog's mouth open
or the w olf’ll die.”
The tall man, Weedon Scott, was a mining expert at the gold
mines. Matt drove his sled. Weedon took a gun with a long nose
Irom his side. He put the nose o f the gun inside the bulldog’s
mouth and tried to force it open. Cherokee's ow ner cam e into
the pen.
“Don't break his teeth, mister. That’s all I ask. Don't break his
teeth.”
“Get back or I’ll break yours!”
C h ap ter 8

Weedon used all his strength to open the bulldog's mouth,

and he succeeded. He threw the bulldog back, and Matt tried to
stop White Fang’s bleeding. Beauty Smith was angry.
“That there is my dog! Give him back to me!”
Weedon Scott took out his wallet and gave die man one hundred
fifty dollars.
“There! Now he’s mine!”
“H e’s worth more than that!”
Weedon Scott felt very angry towards this man who was happy
to see his own dog killed. He punched Beauty Smith so hard in
the face that he knocked him backwards into the snow.
“I can always get die police! I know diey have a nice comfortable
cell for men like you.You stay there in the snow with your money,
and be thankful for what you got! Understand?”
Beauty Smith now knew his cruel game was over.

40

California
eedon Scott and Matt took White Fang to their cabin and
helped him get back his strength. At first.White Fang could
not move or eat. He watched everything Weedon did with one
eye.
“I don’t like the way he looks at you, Mr Scott.”
“I don’t think h e’ll hurt us.”
“But h e’s a wolf! He’s wild!”
“I think there’s som e dog in him. I can’t be sure, but there’s
something about him which is like a dog.”
White Fang always felt like both a w olf and a dog. He felt more
like a w olf when there was danger, and more like a dog when a
human loved him. Weedon made him feel more like a dog and
White Fang followed him everywhere. He let Weedon touch his
head but w as ready to kill anyone w ho tried to hurt his new
master.
* The day cam e when Weedon had to leave Fort Yukon to go
home to California. He had a wife and children there, and his
work in the north w'as finished.
“What about the wolf, Mr Scott?”
“Take care of him, Matt. I can’t take a w olf to California. Write
to me about him.”
White Fang saw Weedon's suitcases, and he knew something
was wrong. Matt locked White Fang in the cabin, then he and
Weedon got on the boat for California. White Fang heard the boat
whistle. He knew his master was leaving, and this thought made
him crazy. He jumped and claw'ed at the doors. He howled as
loudly as he could. He heard the boat whistle again. Finally, he
went to one side o f the cabin, and looked at the closed window.

41
C hap ter 9

Then he ran with all his strength and jumped through the glass
and out into the snow.
Weedon was on the boat saying good-bye to Matt. Matt was
the first one to see White Fang.
“I don’t believe it!”
Weedon turned around and saw White Fang with his bloody
nose and head sitting on the boat behind him.
“I think he went right through the window!”
“What are we going to do?”
“Well, Matt, I guess I’ll write to you and tell you how he’s doing
in California!”
“You mean...”
“Yes, I’m taking him with me. I can’t leave him here. He’s too
special.”
And so White Fang went to California with Weedon, but Weedon
was worried about the wolf. Wliite Fang did whatever Scott wanted,
but Weedon knew that if the wolf-dog bit anyone, people would
kill him.
The boat arrived in San Francisco. For the first time,White Fang
saw cars and streets and tall buildings. There were many, many
people walking around. White Fang did not like the cars, and the
people looked at him and pointed. Some tried to touch him and
he showed them his teeth, but W eedon trained him.
“No! You don’t bite here.”
White Fang did w'hat his master said, but things were very
difficult for him there. A cabman tried to take W eedon’s suitcases
and White Fang growled and did not let him touch them until
Weedon returned. W eedon’s wife ran and hugged her husband
when she saw him.White Fang thought it was an attack. He jumped
at her, but Weedon caught him before he could attack her.
C h ap ter 9

“No! It’s O.K."

“Weedon, why did you bring a w olf here? He'll kill som eone!"
“Perhaps it's going to be m ore difficult to keep him than I
thought.”
Now W eedon was not sure he could keep White Fang with
him in California. But what else could he do with him?
C hap ter 10

Man’s World
eedon lived in the country on a large farm with his wife
and children, his father and sisters and all their servants.
Everyone on the farm was afraid o f White Fang - except for Collie.
She was one o f the farm dogs, and it was her job to look after
the chickens. She followed White Fang everywhere he went, and
growled at him. She made his life very difficult, so White Fang
pretended to b e asleep when she was near. That was the only
thing that kept her quiet.
Weedon did his best to train White Fang. He wanted everybody
to accept this wolf-dog from the wild. White Fang was very clever.
He knew that his master loved his children more than anything,
and he knew that he must never hurt them. Whatever pleased his
master. White Fang accepted. Whatever m ade him angry. White
Fang knew was wrong. This was how he learned the rules.
But there w ere still difficult lessons for him to learn. White
Fang found the chicken house on the farm, and one night he
killed fifty chickens. W eedon’s father,Judge Scott, was very angry.
And so was Collie!
“Weedon, if that wolf kills one more chicken, I’ll shoot him!”
“Father, I know White Fang. Leave him alone with the chickens
once more, and if he kills any, I'll give you one gold coin for each
one.”
“And if he kills none?”
“You'll tell him h e’s the best wolf-dog in the world!”
Weedon showed White Fang the dead chickens and simply
said “No! Never!” Then, he left the w olf alone in the chicken house
for one afternoon. White Fang went to sleep. W hen he woke up,
Weedon Scott and his father were standing next to him.

45
C hap ter 10

“Well, Dad?”
“O.K. White Fang, you're the best wolf-dog in the world.”
Alice, W eedon’s wife, still did not trust the dog. She thought
he was dangerous for the children. But that all changed one day.
One afternoon, Weedon went riding and took White Fang with
him. A rabbit jumped out in front of the horse and scared it.The
horse threw Weedon onto the ground. Weedon broke his leg and
could not move. They were miles from home. When White Fang
saw his master in pain, he attacked the horse, but Weedon shouted,
“No, White Fang! You must go hom e!”
White Fang did not understand at first.
“Home!”
White Fang knew the word, but he did not want to leave his
master.
“Home!”
Finally, White Fang left, but he looked back several times to
make sure that his master was all right. When he could not see
his master anymore, he ran as only a w olf can. W hen he got to
the house, the children tried to play with him, but he growled at
them. Alice cam e running out.
“You see that? I don’t trust that animal with the children!”
The whole family was now outside in front of the house. White
Fang went to Alice and pulled at her dress with his teeth.
“What’s he doing?”
White Fang ran around nervously. He looked at them, and he
Tied to make them understand. He made strange sounds.
"I think h e’s trying to talk,” said the Judge.
Wolves cannot bark. They howl. But this time, as White Fang
was trying to make them understand, a strange sound started in
his throat. With all his strength, he barked for the first time in his
hfe. Suddenly, Alice realized that something was very wrong. 47
C h ap ter 10

‘ W eedon’s in trouble! Oh Father, get the horses! We must find

him!”
White Fang barked again, and he began to run. He showed
them where Weedon was. After that, nobody thought badly o f the
wolf-dog again - except for ju d ge Scott. He could not trust White
Fang completely.
“Weedon. I still don’t believe that a wild animal can learn to
live with people and live by p eo p le’s rules.”
“I think White Fang once lived like a dog, or he has som e dog
in him. I don’t know ... but h e’s probably the only one who lived
his life as both a wolf and a dog.”
Strangely, Collie seem ed to like White Fang now. They often
ran together through the fields and the woods just like Kiche and
One Eye used to. At night, Alice let White Fang sleep inside the
house, so that he could protect the family.
O ne night, when everyone was asleep, White Fang heard a
noise. It was dark everywhere, but he smelled a stranger in the
house. This stranger made no sound but wralked quietly to the
bottom of the stairs. White Fang walked quietly behind the stranger.
He knew that the stranger was a bad man - and he sensed danger.
The man started to go upstairs towards his master’s bedroom .
Suddenly, White Fang jumped at the man and put his teeth around
the m an’s throat. The man and White Fang fell down the stairs
together.
A horrible fight began and the man took a gun out o f his
pocket and shot White Fang. But White Fang held on to the man’s
throat. The family woke up with all the noise. When they turned
on the lights, they saw the two bodies at the bottom o f the stairs.
Judge Scott recognized the man.
“That’s Jim Hall! He escaped from prison last w eek!”

“He won't be going anywhere again, Dad. I think he’s d ead ..

“... and the w olf killed him - and saved us! Father, please get
the doctor!”
The doctor cam e to look at White Fang.
“He’s got a lot o f broken bones and took three bullets. 1 don't
think he can get well.”
“But we must help him! Please do everything you can!” said
Judge Scott.

White Fang did get well, but it was many weeks before he
could stand up. He was very w eak.The family watched him one
evening as he walked for the first time after his accident. They
followed him to the stable where Collie was laying with som e
puppies. Som e looked like Collie and som e looked like White
Fang. When she first saw White Fang, Collie growled at him. Weedon
held onto Collie and White Fang went to look at the pups. O ne
licked him on the nose. White Fang was surprised, but he licked
the pup back. Somehow, he knew these were his pups. Collie
stopped growling and looked at White Fang in a new way.
Suddenly, White Fang thought o f his mother, Kiche, and how
they hunted together like wolves. He felt the call o f the wild, but
he did not want to leave his new hom e - or his new family. The
moon was full and the sky was bright with stars. White Fang stood
up and howled. His voice traveled from the m an’s world, through
the forests, back to the land of the wild.
