Discussion
Parts of the Respiratory System and Their Functions

Food is important to us because it provides the energy to run body functions. But before you
acquire energy, your body cells must use the oxygen you breathe to get energy from the food you eat.
This process is called respiration.

Parts

The picture above shows the human respiratory system. Trace the parts with your finger, and you
will notice that they form a passageway or tract that passes in and out of the lungs.
The nose, nasal cavity, and pharynx make up the upper respiratory tract, while the larynx, trachea,
bronchi, bronchioles, and alveoli consist the lower respiratory tract.
The lungs are the largest organs in the respiratory system.

Functions

Altogether, the different parts of the respiratory system enable it to perform its function of
getting oxygen into the body and ridding off carbon dioxide. Let us now learn how each part works.

Nose and Nasal Cavity

The nose is the uppermost part of the
respiratory tract. It is made up of bones and cartilage.
It forms a hollow passage that connects the nostrils
and the top of the throat. This passage is called the
nasal cavity. It is lined with a mucous membrane
which bears tiny hairs. The function of the nose is
to filter, warm, and moisten the air before it moves
on to the other parts of the respiratory tract. The
tiny hairs trap the dust particles, bacteria, and other
foreign bodies that enter the nose. These hairs also
induced sneezing to remove foreign bodies lodged in the nose.
4
Mouth and Pharynx

Face a mirror and open your mouth. Do you see the arch at the back of your mouth? This arch
leads into your pharynx or throat. The pharynx is a passageway from the back of the mouth and nose, to
the upper part of the esophagus, and into the voice box or larynx. The pharynx acts like a station where
the food tube and the air tube meet. Food being swallowed is prevented from entering the air tube by a
thin structure, called the epiglottis which closes the air tube. Therefore, you cannot breathe while you
are swallowing.

Larynx and Trachea

The lower end of the pharynx is called the larynx. It forms part
of the air tube. One of its functions is the production of sounds
used for speech. Another one is to prevent us from choking. The
elongated space between the vocal cords is called the glottis. As
mentioned earlier, the epiglottis folds back over the glottis when
you swallow food, so food cannot enter the trachea or windpipe.
The trachea or windpipe starts just below the larynx and
ends behind the upper part of the breasts’ bone where it divides
to form two tubes.
It is made up of elastic tissue and smooth muscle. It has
rings of elastic cartilage that keep the trachea open when the
neck moves. It is lined with a mucous membrane and hair-like
structures called cilia. Mucus helps trap dust and bacteria in the
incoming air.

Bronchi, Bronchioles and Alveoli

The trachea is divided into two smaller tubes called bronchi. Each bronchus (singular of
bronchi) enters the lung and passes into narrower tubes called bronchioles. The walls of the bronchi and
larger bronchioles are supported by cartilage. Their walls produce mucus which is moved upward by the
cilia to clear the air passage.
Each bronchiole ends in balloon-like air sacs called alveoli. The alveoli have thin walls that are
surrounded by blood vessels. The exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide takes place in the alveoli.
There are about 300 million alveoli in the lungs. These alveoli increase the surface area of the lungs and
allow many blood vessels to collect oxygen.

5
The Lungs

We have two lungs. They lie in the chest

cavity and are surrounded by the rib cage. Each
lung is enclosed in a double membrane called
the pleura. The pleura is coated by fluid. This
allows the lungs to slide freely, as they expand
and contract during breathing.
The lungs are the main organs of the
respiratory system. Their function is to supply
oxygen and remove carbon dioxide from the
blood.
Below your lungs, there is the diaphragm. The diaphragm is a muscle that helps move air in
and out of your lungs. Upon breathing, it contracts and relaxes.

Lesson 12: The Circulatory System

Guide Card

Introduction: What I need to know

THE CIRCULATORY SYSTEM

The circulatory system also called the cardiovascular

system is the transport system of the body. It is an amazing
highway that travels through the entire body, distributing
materials to all body cells. It shows the connections between the
blood vessels and the different muscles and organs of the body.

It has two main functions:

1. It delivers nutrients, oxygen, and other materials to all the cells

of the body.

2. It picks up and transports wastes from the cells to the organs to

get rid of unwanted materials or substances.

Learning Competency
Identify the parts and functions of the circulatory system

13
Pre-Test: What I know

Direction: Re-arrange the letters to show the main parts of the circulatory system. Use the picture of the
circulatory system to find the answers. Write your answers in your science notebook.

1. R E H T A

2. O L B O D

3. D O B L O S L E V S E S

Can you identify the function of each part? Complete the

statements below. Do not forget to write your answers
in your notebook. GOODLUCK!

1. The __________ is a fluid that travels through the heart

and vessels that carries oxygen and nutrients to the
body cells and takes away their waste products.

2. The _________ pumps blood to the different parts of the

body.

3. The _________ is the passageway of blood.

What’s in

Now let us start learning!

The circulatory system has three main parts that work together: the heart, the blood, and the
blood vessels. (arteries, veins, capillaries)

Parts and Functions of the Circulatory System

The HEART

The heart is the center of the circulatory system. The heart pumps blood to the different parts of
the body. It beats about 60 -100 times per minute to distribute blood to the different parts of the body.
Yet, the heart never gets tired.

The BLOOD

The blood is also known as the river of life. It is a fluid that travels through the heart and the
vessels. It carries oxygen and nutrients to the body cells and takes away or removes their waste products.
A young person has about a gallon of blood while an adult has about 5 liters of blood.

The BLOOD VESSELS

The passage way of blood in the body. They are like water pipes that carry water to different
places.

14
If you could take all the vessels out and line them up end to end, they could measure 96,600
kilometers.

There are three kinds of blood vessels:

1. Arteries - blood vessels that carry blood away from the heart

2. Veins - blood vessels that carry blood back to the heart

3. Capillaries - smallest blood vessels that connect arteries and veins

1. What are the 3 main parts of the circulatory system?

2. What is the function of the heart?

3. What does the heart distribute?

4. Why do you think that blood is called the river of life?

5. If some parts of the blood vessels are blocked, what do you think will happen?
16
MINI DISCUSSION

There are millions of cells in our bodies. These cells need food and oxygen. How do the cells
get food and oxygen? The work of carrying the food, nutrients, and oxygen to the cells is done by the
circulatory system. The circulatory system is made up of the heart, the blood, and the blood vessels.
The blood flows through the blood vessels. The heart pumps blood to all parts of the body.

We know that the circulatory system acts as the transport system that moves the blood
throughout the body. The transport system works together with other organs like kidneys and lungs to
dispose of waste such as carbon dioxide and liquid waste from the blood.

How does the blood circulate?

The blood enters the heart. From the heart, the blood goes to the lungs. In the lungs, the blood
takes in oxygen. In return, it gives up carbon dioxide. These gases leave the body every time we exhale.
Then from the lungs, the blood goes back to the heart. The heart keeps the blood flowing throughout the
body.

To keep the circulatory system healthy and functioning, one must exercise regularly, have a
healthy balanced diet, avoid smoking, and be in a clean and peaceful environment.

Discussion
Parts of the Female Reproductive System
The female reproductive system carries out numerous functions. It is responsible for producing
egg cells called the ova or oocytes. The ova/oocytes are then transported to the fallopian, where
fertilization may occur. The female reproductive system also has its ability to give a temporary haven
for developing human beings.

The female’s reproductive system is made up of the following organs: fallopian tube, ovaries,
uterus, cervix, and vagina.

The Fallopian tubes are about as wide as a piece of spaghetti. It is also called oviduct, where the
sperm usually meets the egg cell then travels to the uterus. There are two fallopian tubes, each attached
to a side of the uterus. The fallopian tubes connect the ovaries to the uterus and the rest of the
reproductive system.

Ovaries are oval-shaped organs. The female reproductive system has a pair of ovaries or female
gonads. The ovaries have two main functions in the body. They produce, store, and release egg cells or
ova (singular ovum) for fertilization, and they produce female sex hormones (estrogen, progesterone)
that cause females to undergo body changes.

The uterus or the womb is a pear-shaped organ with a muscular wall or lining that is capable of
expanding and contracting to accommodate a growing fetus.

32
Cervix connects the uterus to the vagina that opens during the normal delivery of a baby.

Vagina or birth canal is a hollow tube that extends from the vaginal opening to the uterus. It has
muscular walls that can expand and contract. It is through the vagina that the sperm enters the female
reproductive system, and it is also the passageway of the baby during normal delivery.
