E-PORTFOLIO in LTS 1-B (Module 1&2)
E-PORTFOLIO in LTS 1-B (Module 1&2)
IN
LITERACY TRAINING
SERVICE (LTS-1B)
1. Guiding Principles – In my own understanding, guiding principles are all about the belief of the
organization or in this case a program. It also serves as the guides in order to attain its primary goals.
2. Program Components – A perfect example for this is NSTP which is a program whose primary
purpose is enhancing civic consciousness and defense preparedness in the youth and is composed
of three components namely ROTC, CWTS and LTS. Technically, Program Components serves as
the classes and programs designed for a specified purpose that comprised something.
3. Clustering – With the meaning itself, it is all about clustering or grouping the students enrolled in
different schools but taking up the same NSTP components.
4. Program Implementation – Program Implementation can include planning which includes their
ways and processes implementation and management in a program. For instances, who are required
to take the program, the time that they should be lending to the program and the likes.
5. NSTP – National Service Training Program (NSTP) is a program that aims at enhancing civic
consciousness and defense preparedness in the youth by developing the ethics of service and
patriotism while undergoing training in any of its program components which are the CWTS, ROTC
and LTS.
6. CWTS – Civic Welfare Training Services (CWTS) is a program designed to enhance the civic
consciousness of students by developing the value of service and commitment for the welfare and
betterment of life of all members of the community.
7. LTS – Literacy Training Service (LTS) is a component of NSTP that focuses on training students to
become teachers of reading-writing literacy and numeracy to children, out-of-school youth, and other
sectors of society. Education students are the primary target of this component.
8. ROTC – Reserve Officers’ Training Corps aims to provide military education and training for students
to mobilize them for national defense preparedness. Graduates of the ROTC advance program
usually serve in all branches of the Armed Forces in the Philippines.
9. Amendatory Clause – Based on my reading, Amendatory Clause includes Section 35 of
Commonwealth Act No. 1, Executive Order No. 207 of 1939, Section 2 and 3 of Presidential Decree
No. 1706, and Section 38 and 39 Republic Act No. 7077. that are changed accordingly as well as
the laws, orders, rules, regulations and the likes if problems concerning those are present.
10. Transitory Provisions – In my own understanding, transitory provisions are the matters that every
freshman male student should comply in taking NSTP such as the processes and the ‘must-know’
information pertaining to the said topic.
LET’S FIND OUT:
A. The jumbled letters were all about the National Service Training Programs’ goal, objectives and its
importance. Wherein, it included the three components of National Services Training Programs
which are the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC), Literacy Training Service (LTS), and Civic
Welfare Training Services (CWTS). The guiding principles, program implantation, clustering,
program components, amendatory clause, and transitory provisions that discusses and contain every
information about National Service Training Programs were also present.
B. Surely, without the help of the information from the given lessons, I would have had a hard time
figuring out those jumbled letters. Basically, it’s because almost all of the topics were not so familiar
to me since I am only a freshman and this is my first time taking NSTP. But more than that, one thing
is for sure, those letters will play a big role in this LTS-journey of mine and that I should keep those
words in my head all throughout the process.
LESSON 2.
LET’S GET STARTED!
2. As a teenager, I do exercise my rights by confidently living and enjoying my life knowing that I deserve
all these privileges and serenity. I’m pursuing education and loving its thrills and challenges. More
than that, I also confidently interact with men around me having the thoughts that advocacies and
laws for gender equity is with me. And most especially, I do whatever my goals in life are.
MODULE 2:
LESSON 1.
LET’S GET STARTED:
➢ Personalism – a term emphasizing the significance, uniqueness and traits of personality of person.
It is also the personhood of a man.
➢ Awareness – It is being conscious about something or being informed on what’s happening in your
surroundings and in different reality aspects.
➢ Family Orientation – It is the state of being devoted and concerned to your family.
➢ Self-Confidence – It is a person’s capability to believe in his/her potentials, physical features and
the likes and to display or portray those things proudly to other people.
➢ Joy and Humor – A personal trait of being jolly and cheerful.
LET’S DO THIS:
1.
A. Strengths of the Filipino Character
a. Pakikipagkapwa-tao – We, Filipinos, are well-known for our hospitalism. Foreigners from other
countries are truly amazed by our generosity and helpfulness all the time. For instance, when
Filipino families have visitors, they do everything they can to make them comfortable including
offering them foods and snacks. In addition to that, Filipinos can’t stand the sight of a struggling
person especially with their baggages and will do something to help that person which mostly
are elders, pregnant women and persons with disabilities. Those situations truly prove the
essence of being a Filipino and their ‘pakikipagkapwa-tao’ where in foreign countries this trait
can hardly be seen.
b. Family Orientation – Filipino families are very much family-oriented group of people. For
instance, the parents and the elders in a family are highly respected by their sons, daughters
and youths of the family. You can only see most cases of a daughter or a son having their own
family yet still reside in their parent’s place in Philippines. Which, of course, results to that strong
bond and belongingness among them.
c. Joy and Humor – Of course, social celebrations in Philippines can’t possibly be absent.
Birthdays, weddings, graduation blowouts, christening, Fiestas, reward dinners and the likes
calls for a social celebration with plenty of foods and plenty of people. What makes it more fun
is that, most celebrations aren’t limited for some people only. Anyone with good intentions can
join, may a person be unrelated to the person conducting the celebration which mostly happens
in a Fiesta. Fiestas, in my opinion, are the most fun and enjoyable celebrations present in
Philippines. These gatherings show how cheerful and jolly Filipinos are.
d. Flexibility, Adaptability and Creativity – Filipinos are very much capable when it comes to
adjusting, creativity, resourcefulness, adept of learning and the ability to make temporary things
or come up with ideas and make use of any resources available to produces something beneficial
or a necessity for them especially in crisis. Most Filipinos are ‘kuripot’, ‘why buy a new one when
you can still repair it somehow?’, their primary mindset when it comes to saving. Those
mentioned traits are the main reason why foreigners in foreign countries prefer Filipinos as their
workers because of our unmatched dedication in variety of chores.
e. Hard Work and Industry – This trait can be seen among Filipino youths striving for their goals
in life despite of the poverty that they are currently in to obtain a better life especially for their
family. And most of all in our OFW heroes risking their lives multi-tasking and working abroad
just to give their family here in Philippines a decent life.
f. Faith and Religiosity – Filipinos are very much religious, faithful in God and who primary
believes in life after death. When we were still young, we were taught by the elders to behave
accordingly in order for us to go in heaven after death and to avoid falling down in hell which we,
Filipinos, still believe until now. Those religious beliefs resulted to positive outcomes such as
serenity, well-being, optimism and to a peaceful life.
g. Ability to Survive - In an economic crisis, Filipinos will be the last to survive. They can make
use of anything they can see in meeting their necessity amidst life difficulties such as poverty.
For instance, insufficient money can’t make them hungry for Filipinos can do gardening and
planting which can be their primary sources for food. Filipinos makes the most with whatever is
available in the environment because of their strong survival instincts which is related to their
optimism, flexibility and adaptability.
B. Weaknesses of the Filipino Character
a. Extreme Personalism – It is a trait where Filipinos view the world in terms of personal relationships,
and the extent to which one is able to personally relate to things. Wherein, there is no separation
between the objective task and the emotional involvement. In some words, it is an “exaggerated
pakikipagkapwa-tao”. Extreme personalism thus leads to the graft and corruption evident in
Philippine society.
b. Extreme Family Centeredness – Truly that Filipinos are family-oriented people and thus a good
trait but it could be a serious problem when it’s on an extreme level. This is one of the most evident
toxic traits of Filipinos that can be mostly seen in politics. For instance, a family member who has
authority and a leader utilizes his/her power to promote the interests of their family members
including introducing them to politics that can block national consciousness.
c. Lack of Discipline – Honestly, I’m also one of the Filipinos who lacks discipline. I have a poor time
management and use to procrastinate every time to every small thing. I usually start doing my
activities with full energy and dedication but always ended up becoming lazy amid the process
leaving me in a disadvantageous situation for how many times. What’s worse is that I am a die-hard
fun of “maňana habit”. I can say that I, truly, am a Filipino.
d. Passivity and Lack of Initiative – As a Filipino, this character is very much tangible everywhere
and I’ve witnessed such situations for how many times. Filipinos lacks initiatives in doing different
things. Most has to be told what has to be done especially if it is from an authorized person. I, myself,
admit that I’m also like this sometimes and I truly believe in an authorized person’s superiority and
skills that’s why. But in some point, of course, this is not always beneficial or good.
e. Colonial Mentality – Colonial Mentality basically means doing, eating, wearing and practicing what
we see from other countries especially if it is a trend. A perfect example for this is the K-POP
syndrome where almost all Filipino teenagers copy their fashion style, eat what they are eating and
are trying hard to learn their language because, nowadays, it is very much popular and trendy. This
type of mentality exists because of lack of patriotism, appreciation and love for our country and
Filipinos’ personal preferences for foreign things.
f. Kanya-kanya Syndrome – We can’t deny that Filipinos are somehow selfish and is secretly
competing with each other including the presence of dirty tricks such as ‘tsismis’, ‘intriga’ and
unconstructive criticisms just to be on top. This characteristic can also be described as ‘crab
mentality’ referring to the tendency of crabs in a basket to pull each other down just like how different
people in society ruin and pull down other people afraid of being outweighed by them.
g. Lack of Self Analysis and Self-Reflection – Us, being spontaneous is really a big asset against
any challenges, but sometimes it can be our weakness too. Because even in serious times or serious
talks, Filipinos always tend to throw jokes and take such things without being considerate that can
sometimes do no good to the person that they are pertaining.
h. Filipino Indolence – According to Spaniards, we, Filipinos, are lazy and lack initiatives and
ambitions. Maybe because they forced and abused our ancestors before, thus it made them felt
useless and hopeless. But according to Jose Rizal, Filipinos weren’t those talks at all. That natural
phenomena weren’t just in favor with us such as the hot climate, we were banned from education,
and were taught first by Spaniards with undesirable habits such as gambling.
i. Maniana Habit – It is Filipinos’ habit of procrastinating what they are doing. That instead of doing it
right away in free time, we always choose to on it on the other time even when we can do it now.
j. The Fiesta Syndrome – It is one of our traditions as Filipinos to celebrate Patron Saints in our
respective places with extravagant celebrations and gatherings costing us expensive amounts just
to be satisfied and the day after the celebration encountering financial problems.
a. The Family and Home Environment – Our respective homes are the primary source of our first
traits and knowledges in life. As kids, we tend to adapt what we are seeing from the adults including
their attitudes and practices; we do what they do, we say what they taught us to say and the likes.
We are raised with full of love and high nurturance but with low independence training and discipline
that therefore affects our actions and mindsets when we grow up.
b. Social Environment – This can be perfectly described with the saying that “No Man is an Island”.
We are surrounded by variety of individuals with different personalities and we tend to socialize with
them as part of life. Our characters are interconnected to what we see on how other people act and
live ever since the early stages of our life until this very moment.
c. Culture and Language – Our characters as Filipinos correlates with our culture and languages.
Filipino culture is open-minded to the outside matter such as easily adapting to foreign stuffs without
prior consciousness to our very own natural core. The most common issue that will explain this is
usage of English language as the measure of someone’s intelligence which evident in almost all
school here in Philippines.
d. History – There is no one to blame but our very own “Colonial History” for the Filipinos’ lack of
nationalism nowadays. We have been colonized and oppressed by foreign countries for how many
times which had resulted to Filipinos’ mindset that colonial power is more superior and powerful. The
invasion of Americans and Spaniards left us with the belief of being a second class to them and the
sense of dependence to foreign powers.
e. The Educational System – As we see in today’s books in school, majority of them were not
published locally and are from foreign authors which is not that connected to our nationality and our
country. Mainly because, we, Filipinos, lack suitable local textbooks that could sufficiently fill our
hunger for knowledge. Before, school was authoritarian with the teacher being the central focus and
what they say should be followed. But luckily now, voices that advocates individual differences and
capabilities of students are getting louder and application of proper teaching methods laws are being
successfully implemented process by process and from time to time.
f. Religion – Religions contains different practices and beliefs that affects ones’ character. We,
Filipinos believe in life after death and therefore we practice what the religion teaches may it be a
bad one or a good one. But all in all, religion is the Filipinos’ root of optimism and in accepting
challenges and struggles with all their might.
g. The Economic Environment – Poverty is rooted to Filipino traits. It drives them to do something
undesirable which mostly are against the laws just to barely eat for survival purposes. At the same
time, poverty also serves as their motivation leaving them motivated, dedicated and strong in
obtaining their ever dreamed serene and peaceful life.
h. The Political Environment – I can say that politics here in Philippines is very toxic and pure ironic.
Politicians will do everything they can to convince the people to vote for them and do ‘good’ things
only in elections. In addition to that, the power and authority is only for elites and what’s worst is that
election is a very crucial national happening for the country to be progressive yet the people’s extent
is to only vote in the election.
i. Mass Media – Mass medias are indeed major influencers to people especially to kids and to youths.
What they witness, hear and sometimes experience in that medium influences their characters. I,
myself, admits that I was one of those teenagers who copies their idols personalities and etcetera
just to be with the trend, but that was before though.
Preamble – It is an introductory document which explains the documents’ purpose and underlying
philosophy of the constitution within a specific organization. When applied to the opening paragraphs
of a statute, it may recite historical facts pertinent to the subject of the statute.
Makabayan – Having or showing love, respect and concern to your own land or country.
Makatao – The act of being a good fellow to your fellowmen such as respecting their rights, treating
them nicely and fairly and the likes.
Maka-Diyos – Having a strong faith to God as well as doing what is right and obeying his
commandments.
Maka-kalikasan – It is the act of showing concern and appreciation to what God has given to us
which is our mother nature including our natural resources and environmental beings through
protecting, caring and preserving their beauties.
LET’S FIND OUT:
➢ Are you familiar with the preamble? Do you know its importance to all Filipinos?
• Yes, I’m quiet familiar with the Preamble because it was included in our lesson in Disciplines and
Ideas in Applied Social Sciences when I was in senior high school, grade 11 to be precise.
However, during that time wasn’t that knowledgeable about it. But right now, after thorough
research, I found out the importance of Preamble. The Preamble explains why certain laws of the
Philippine Constitution exist. It would reveal what the Filipinos want to be, their beliefs, and what
they’re striving towards.
➢ What can you say about the Values of the Filipinos in general? Do you agree or disagree on them?
Why?
• As Filipinos, we possess the greatest characteristics in the world. Yes, we have some negative
sides but, we do have excellent qualities and characters that every Filipinos should be proud of.
Filipino values pertain to a collection of values or a value system that has traditionally been
important in the lives of every Filipino. This Philippine value system consists of its own set of
beliefs, moral standards, ethical practices, etiquette and cultural and personal values, all of which
are supported by our society. I do agree on them because we all acquire values and whenever we
hear about it, it truly reminds us the essence and the pride of being a Filipino in blood and in heart.
➢ Do you practice respect to everyone? Why? What are your thoughts about it?
• Yes, I do practice respect to everyone. As much as I could, I hate pre-judging people whom I just
met, I can’t say right away that they’re bad or good persons. I want to know them better based on
how they treat me and the people around them, and I do respect their ways even if its not in my
favor. I hate starting any commotion it feels so wrong.
LET’S DO THIS:
1. Pagkamaka-Diyos
GOD’S LOVE
4. Pagkamakakalikasan
MOTHER NATURE
This is the very first week of our lesson for Literacy Training Service 1-B and I was
excited as to what would I learn from it because, honestly, I don’t know much about the
components of NSTP especially the LTS. What I’m quiet familiar with this program is the ROTC
for I’ve heard it from my friends in college but I’ve never heard of the term LTS before. And
during the enrollment, the registrar asked if what would I choose among the three components of
National Service Training Program and I asked him to explain each and every one of them because
I really don’t know. And when I was partially aware of its meanings, I have decided to choose
Literacy Training Service (LTS) because I found it fun.
I’ve started my week by answering the pre-test given to us by our very own
instructor, Ma’am Gemma Lagarde Tapel. Consequently, I’ve started reading and internalizing the
topics in Lesson 1 and started answering the activities based on the topics. At the end of the lesson
1, I had learned about the meaning of NSTP, it aims to enhance the civic consciousness and defense
preparedness in the youth and it has three components namely: ROTC, LTS, CWTS. I have also
learned about the soul-purpose of the program that I’m enrolled at and it is about training college
students so that they may able to teach literacy and numeracy skills to different social groups who
needed such services. In addition to that, I have also learned about the guiding principles of this
program and I felt proud about it because it is not self-serving and it promotes nothing but the
welfare of all. Furthermore, I also learned about the rules and regulations regarding NSTP. I
discovered who are required to complete one component of the NSTP and how long will it take to
finish it.
With all the lesson that I’ve learned, I commit to sincerely oblige to my duties and
responsibilities as an LTS student such as preparing myself for the actual session of teaching
different social groups who’s in need of my humble assistance. I’m very much excited for that to
happen already and I would be really honored to help.
REFLECTION NO. 2
(Week 2)
For the answering of the activities on Module 1, I’ve already moved to Lesson 2
which was all about citizenship training. Wherein, it focuses first in the Philippine Constitution.
In this lesson I have to admit that it was quite lengthy and I was spacing out while reading for too
long and that was the main challenge. However, at the end of the lesson, I was able to learn
something concerning the Constitution of the Philippines and who are the recognized citizens of
the Philippines. I had also learned about our obligations as Filipino citizens.
This lesson is a must of every youth to learn because we are enjoying the gifts of
our constitution and so as a responsible Filipinos, we should also be mindful that each of us have
a part to play in order to keep the balance of our society and to avoid chaos ruining our peaceful
well-beings and serenity. I also had read about the state policies from section 9 to 13, section 18,
and lastly section 22 which were stated in Philippine Constitution Article II Declaration of
Principles and state Policies. I learned that we are governed by our constitution in order to maintain
peace and for the benefit of all.
My week 3, concerning NSTP, was all about the Lesson 1 in Module 2 which is
entitled as Self-Awareness and Filipino values. In this lesson, we were expected to explain the
nature of the self and the process of self-assessment towards developing self-awareness. Moreover,
we were also expected to identify Filipino values and its strengths and weaknesses, and explain
the implications of these to the general view of Filipino characters.
Upon reading it, I have acquired understanding about the reasons behind our
personalities and learned about how we developed certain characteristics such as our family and
home environment, social environment, culture and language, colonial history, the educational
system, religion, economic environment, political environment and mass media. Which I strongly
agree because I admit that some of my moods, personalities and how I react were also influenced
by those mentioned factors above. For instance, my behavioral manners depend on whom I’m
around with, if I think that they are good people then I would treat them nicely and vice versa. I
also believe that we harness our characters with the bases of what we observe and experience in
our respective homes and is undoubtedly factual.
Yes, our characters are rooted from different factors that surrounds us but now that
we are currently in the stage of being to think rationally, we should change those undesirable
characters that we adapted from others and I commit to do so. I, as a teenager, is not a kid anymore
who can’t distinguish what’s right or wrong and therefore should be flexible enough to change
what’s need to be changed for better.
REFLECTION NO. 4
(Week 4)
This week is just a continuation for my unfinished business in Module 2 las week.
I continued studying our lessons in NSTP-LTS. This time, I have learned the strengths and
weaknesses of Filipino characters which I couldn’t agree more. Wherein, it stated that the strengths
of Filipino characters include pakikipagkapwa-tao, family orientation, joy and humor, flexibility,
adaptability and creativity, hard work and industry, faith and religiosity, and our ability to survive
amidst crisis. Then, with what I understood, I was able to explain each one of them in the activity
which, honestly, is somehow easy for it is, reality-based, popular facts about Filipinos.
Honestly saying, I was a bit disappointed since we’ve found more flaws than virtues
in Filipino characters which include extreme personalism, extreme family centeredness, lack of
discipline, passivity and lack of initiatives, colonial mentality, “kanya-kanya” syndrome, lack of
self-analysis and self-reflection, Filipino indolence, maniana habit, the fiesta syndrome and
exaggerated hospitality. I can definitely agree with those factors because I have seen such matters
happened in different situations for, of course, I am a Filipino. Especially the Fiesta Syndrome, in
our vicinity it is very much tangible every Fiestas but luckily my family isn’t the type to throw
extravagant parties when we have a low budget. And the maniana habit, one of the most toxic traits
we Filipinos have that always renders our productivity despite being innovative people. But, at the
very least, this portrays that we are not prejudiced and that we embrace and admit even our flaws.
Week 5 and I was already in the lesson 2 which was all about the basic values of
Filipinos. In this lesson, we were expected to identify and explain the basic values of Filipinos,
familiarize the PREAMBLE of the Philippine Constitution, and explain the principles embodied
in the 4 clusters namely Makabayan, Makatao, Maka-Diyos and Makakalikasan. I started by first
reading the topic and then proceeded in answering the activities.
I have learned that the term preamble is derived from the Latin word "preambulare"
which means "to walk before" and is the prologue of the Constitution. I have also read about the
good citizenship values which are the clusters mentioned above that are reflected in the Preamble
of the 1987 Philippine Constitution. Each was discussed thoroughly and detailed by detailed
providing exact definitions, sufficient discussions and example situations. And I was able to create
a simple poem for the activity after that.
REFLECTION NO. 6
(Week 6)
Last week for the Module 1 and Module 2 in NSTP-LTS and all I did was finishing
my e-portfolio which should be submitted before the exams. I finished answering all the included
activities in every lesson and made my final touches for my electronic portfolio. I also
brainstormed all the lessons for the final crafting of my reflections and prepared for the submission.
All in all, the lessons from Module 1 and Module 2 made me feel that I already
understand the true essence and the deep meaning of being a Filipino. It was indeed enlightening
for my clueless brain especially that I wasn’t that aware of such matters concerning our very own
country. All of the lessons hold strong information that we, Filipinos, must keep in mind and I’m
thankful that I had this subject in this semester. I’m expecting great and fun facts for the upcoming
weeks of this NTSP journey of mine. Most importantly, I can say that I am now halfway ready in
being a full-equipped person for advocating an promoting our nation’s well-being.
