Activity 1.3 Using the Internet, do research on the following topics. Note significant information
that you have gathered including the references.

1. The current state of the Internet and World Wide Web.

The World Wide Web was designed originally as an interactive world of shared information
through which people could communicate with each other and with machines. Since its
inception in 1989 it has grown initially as a medium for the broadcast of read-only material from
heavily loaded corporate servers to the mass of Internet connected consumers. Recent
commercial interest in its use within the organization under the "Intranet" buzzword takes it into
the domain of smaller, closed, groups, in which greater trust allows more interaction. In the
future we look toward the web becoming a tool for even smaller groups, families, and personal
information systems. Other interesting developments would be the increasingly interactive
nature of the interface to the user, and the increasing use of machine-readable information with
defined semantics allowing more advanced machine processing of global information, including
machine-readable signed assertions.

The rise of the Internet represents the most fundamental transformation in information
technology since the development of personal computers. We are witnessing the emergence of
an open, distributed, global information infrastructure based on the Internet, World Wide Web
servers, and Mosaic. At the same time, inexpensive servers, fast networks, client-server
technology, and visual software tools usable by nonprogrammers are transforming the strategic
use of information by organizations. Taken together, these developments offer an opportunity to
revolutionize information services and electronic commerce, generating both an enormous
business opportunity and a chance to vastly improve access to information for everyone.

Over the next 5 years, the Internet software industry will construct the architectures and
products that will be the core of information infrastructure for the next several decades. The
promise of these technologies to enable a global information infrastructure can hardly be
exaggerated. Decisions made during this critical period will have a profound effect on the
information economy of the next century. But there is a serious risk that avoidable mistakes
and/or entrenched economic interests will cause the opportunity to be lost or much reduced.

This paper therefore discusses the principles that should drive technology development and
adoption in the Internet market, especially for the World Wide Web. Our goal is to promote the
development of an open architecture Internet/Web software industry, and to support the
deployment of the Internet/Web software industry, and to support the deployment of the most
open, easy to use, and productive information infrastructure possible. We believe that a simple
set of principles, if adhered to by vendors and buyers, can maximize the openness,
interoperability, and growth of both the Internet-based infrastructure and the industry providing it.

Vermeer Technologies intends to succeed as a firm by contributing to the development of this

open architecture, Web-based software industry. Vermeer is developing open, standards-based,
client-server visual tools for collaborative World Wide Web service development. These visual
tools will enable end-users to use the Internet to inexpensively develop and operate powerful
World Wide Web information services, which currently require complex programming.

Conclusion

The Web, like the Internet, is designed so as to create the desired "end to end" effect, whilst
hiding to as large an extent as possible the intermediate machinery which makes it work. If the
law of the land can respect this, and be couched in an "end to end" terms, such that no
government or other interference in the mechanisms is legal that would break the end to end
rules, then it can continue in that wayIf not, engineers will have to learn the art of designing
systems so that the end to end functionality is guaranteed whatever happens in between. What
TCP did for reliable delivery(providing it end-to-end when the underlying network itself did not
provide it) , cryptography is doing for confidentiality. Further protocols may do this for
information ownership, payment, and other facets of interaction which are currently bound by
geography. For the information space to be a powerful place in which to solve the problems of
the next generations, its integrity, including its independence of hardware, packet route,
operating system, and application software brand, is essential. Its properties must be consistent,
reliable, and fair, and the laws of our countries will have to work hand in hand with the
specifications of network protocols to make that so.

2. Impact of the Internet on the following fields:

a. Business
The fact is that it’s impossible to conduct business without the internet. In business from idea to
management, production to marketing, selling and purchasing and accounts management to tax
filing it seems the internet is impacting the traditional methods, ongoing operations and
innovations in business.

The Internet is in every tool that business is using and will use in the future. You can also say
that every innovation and new technology is just a part of the internet. Without the internet,
nothing will work and that’s why the internet is the main source of current and in the future for all
kinds of innovations, technologies and business models.

The Internet connects businesses and consumers to the platforms of communications, trade,
education, and entertainment. Now entrepreneurs, leaders and companies are investing in
digital marketing, business automation, remote hiring, e-commerce, and online collaboration
tools and trying to increase the speed of creativity and excellence in daily operations with the
help of internet technologies.

Now the consumer is expecting the revolutionized products and services. Customers priorities,
expectations, desires and styles are changing. It’s because customers are now connected with
educational platforms and content. And due to the availability and higher speed of information,
knowledge, and opinions, it’s changing the decisions and priorities of customers, consumers,
companies, and robots (Artificial Intelligence applications and technologies). And that’s why the
impact of the internet on business is negative and positive.

In political language, if the impact of the internet on businesses then within a few seconds it
starts impacting the businesses. That’s what the internet has done and will do in the future. And
in common people's language,

It’s because we all are now connected to the internet from business to consumers, teachers to
students, readers to writers and we can communicate instantly from anywhere on any device
and anytime. It was not possible a few decades ago. Obviously, it’s impacting businesses,
employment, environment, entrepreneurship, societies, education, and politics.

b. Education

It’s 2020 and there is no arguing that technology plays a vital role in our lives. Technology does
everything from allowing us to explore the vast expanse of our solar system to helping us kill a
few minutes while we wait for our bus. So, it is no surprise that technology has a major impact
on education. Although many schools across the world are taking advantage of technology in
the classroom, others are not so lucky. A technology gap currently exists in schools of the
Philippines that is preventing its students from enjoying the advantages provided by technology
in the classroom.

Countless studies have established that technology is a beneficial supplement to the education
system. One such study, done by Sean M. Corcoran, Ed.D, focuses on the effects that tablet
apps have on reading instruction of first-grade students. The students using tablet apps
performed better than the ones without these apps. Thus, Corcoran’s research concludes that
“the use of tablet apps during reading instruction had a statistically significant impact on student
achievement.” Technology has a positive impact on education, and the people of the Philippines
have taken notice. An article published by The Manila Times highlights a study done by
Houghton Mifflin Harcourt in California. This study “showed that students using iPads performed
better in math compared to students using traditional textbooks.” The article goes on to list even
more convincing evidence by citing an Oklahoma State University study which “found that 75
percent of students said use of gadgets enhanced their learning experience.” With so many
advantages, it is easy to understand why the Philippines is looking to increase its use of
technology for improving education.

The Philippines as a country would benefit greatly from providing more of its students with
high-tech learning tools. A WorldRemit article explains that “especially in emerging countries,
such as the Philippines” it is important that “students can get familiar with technology at a young
age.” This is because technology “sparks many market possibilities – even a chance to compete
against developed economies!” Unfortunately, for impoverished areas of the country, that is not
the current reality. An article published by OffCrowd points out that “Public education and
technology are hard to provide, especially where [the] majority of the people are living beyond
the daily means.” The article goes on to inform that a technology gap is present in the local

schools of the Philippines and that this gap has been caused by a “lack of distribution of
resources to the poverty line.” Without the proper resources, students in these lower-income
areas will not receive the same educational support as students fortunate enough to come from
higher-income regions.

Filipino students suffering from the technology gap are the ones that would benefit the most
from these educational tools. Fortunately, certain conditions do appear to be improving for the
Philippines. According to a Rappler article, the internet is becoming more accessible across the
country. As internet access becomes more available, more students will have a chance at a
quality education–“for example, a student in a remote barangay can participate in a virtual class
conducted by teachers from the capital.” The article goes on to say that “in a country where
millions are still unable to finish school, it’s hard to overestimate technology’s power in bridging
the education gap. Roadblocks such as time, money, or distance can be swept away with a
single device or a free, reliable Internet connection.” By helping Filipino schools and students
increase their access to educational technology, we can help give them the education they
deserve.

At Yours Humanly, our mission is to help create a world in which every child in every school has
an equal opportunity for success. Our Bridging Gaps initiative aims to make this dream a reality.
Through this initiative, we fund new computer labs, upgrade existing labs, and provide computer
science instructors to areas in need–including the Philippines. For many of us who rely on
technology daily, it is difficult to imagine any part of our lives without internet access and
devices. Technological advances have not only made our lives more convenient, but they have
allowed those of us with access to these technologies to make great strides in education. We
believe that every child should have the ability to take advantage of these advances.

c. Family
Most researchers have focused on broad descriptions of trends in the use of the Internet, such
as time spent using computers and the Internet and the ways in which children and adults use
these technologies. Few researchers have examined the ways in which the Internet has altered
family functioning.

One area of speculation is whether computer technology strengthens or damages relationships

among family members. One of the earliest studies on the role of the Internet in family life
monitored a group of parents and their teenagers over their first 1 to 2 years of Internet use.
Parents and adolescents used the Internet more often to interact (e.g., sending and receiving
e-mail) with non household members than to seek information or entertainment. They also spent
less time communicating in the household with family members than they did before gaining
Internet access. These results give credibility to the fears that Internet use damages family
relationships; however, a follow-up study 2 to 3 years later found that these initial declines in
family communication did not persist (Kraut et al., 1998).

The Internet can be used to help families when it is used to create new ways of providing peer
support, family life education, and family therapy. For example, there are numerous news
groups online devoted to family issues such as divorce, death, or children with special needs.
Additionally, family life educators and family therapists have begun to create online opportunities
to provide help to families.

d. Mass Media
The Philippines long had a terrible reputation for telecommunications, with Singapore’s Lee
Kuan Yew famously saying that in 1992, “98 percent of the population are waiting for a
telephone, and the other 2 percent for a dial tone.”
However, beginning with the administration of Fidel Ramos (1992-1998) and followed by
President Estrada (1998-2001), the telecoms industry was liberalized, and phone ownership
skyrocketed. While there were more landlines available, much of the growth was in mobile
phones. Soon the Philippines was the texting (SMS) capital of the world – to the point where the
practice played a part in the ouster of President Estrada early in 2001. When the Senate
impeachment trial was suddenly adjourned without a verdict, the text message went around
“meet at EDSA.” Crowds gathered in the middle of the night and refused to leave the main
Manila thoroughfare until he left the presidential palace.
Fast forward to the present, and we have Facebook being used by more than 25 percent of the
population – ranking 8th in the world, while other social media networks (such as Twitter) are
rapidly growing in popularity. In September 2011, the Philippine Trust Index, commissioned by
EON The Stakeholder Firm, was released. The study revealed that 68 percent of the
respondents view online news sites as the most trusted sources of news and information while
49 percent trust social networking sites.
These impressive metrics are telling about usage, but more needs to be done to understand the
impact that social media has. A good example was the exciting initiative by ABS-CBN, “Boto Mo
Ipatrol Mo” (patrol your vote) that was part of the general introduction of new technology in
election coverage. The network aggressively reached out through advertisements and
roadshows to get people to sign up for the system, and to post their observations and
comments. The effort received 500 reports per day by email, 103 calls, and 3,058 texts during
the electoral campaign. BMPM peaked with 87,419 “Boto Patrollers” in its database, 125,487
fans on Facebook, 23,111 supporters on Twitter, 6,960 members on its microsite, and 3,701
members on Multiply.
The May 2010 automated election was indeed much improved, with lower levels of violence and
being generally accepted as producing honest results. But any impact of BMPM needs to be
assessed in context – for instance, the fact that there were 76,000 different voting places across
the country means that many observers are needed. The long-established Parish Pastoral
Council for Responsible Voting, along with its Muslim partner organizations in Mindanao,
mobilized well over 400,000 volunteer observers who not only sent in reports but forwarded
copies of election returns so that results could be cross-checked.
The Asia Foundation has long partnered with organizations who try to move forward through
technology, helping to sponsor in May 2005 the first Philippine Blogging Summit. Five years
later, in the rapidly transforming social media landscape, we supported civil society
organizations to leverage this technology to reach out to the general public – in this case as part
of human rights advocacy work in the Philippines. Learning to exploit the popularity of online
social networking sites to advance their social and political campaigns and to drum-up public
support, human rights-based organizations underwent a training on “Digital Activism.” This
focused on the use of social networking sites (Facebook), blogging (WordPress), microblogging
(Twitter), web tools and applications (Google documents), live streaming, and mobile activism.
With the support of USAID, we conducted the first series of training in June 2010. Out of 37
human rights-based organizations, including representatives from the Commission on Human
Rights, that participated, 30 created their official Twitter account while 16 have official Facebook
accounts. Monthly monitoring of these social media accounts reveal that they continue to be
active with an average of one post per week that is human-rights related.

.
Building on the gains of the June 2010 training, the Strengthening Human Rights in the
Philippines (SHRP) program conducted an Expanded Digital Activism Training in partnership
with DAKILA – Philippine Collective for Modern Heroism. The second series of training saw over
100 NGOs and key government agencies trained throughout the country. An online
communication plan was introduced as one of the new modules for this second series. Social
networking sites are incorporated in official communication plans of the organizations, thus
optimizing digital media as one of its components.
A total of 74 new blogs, 11 new Facebook pages, as well as 188 posts in 89 blogs were created
during and after the training. Many participants initially shied away from creating Twitter
accounts due to the perceived hassle of maintaining the account, yet 36 new Twitter accounts
were created. Each organization represented in the Expanded Digital Activism Training has
established at least one form of web presence for their organization.
The participants have since started using either organizational or personal online accounts in
promoting their causes and have adopted a strategic approach to conduct human rights
advocacy work in digital media. Some examples of these are:

● Ardan Sali of the Bangsamoro Center for Just Peace in the Philippines used the blog he
created to design a prototype website for Tiyakap Kawagib. He demonstrated his
understanding of website architecture in organizing the pages of the site in a clean and
user-friendly interface.
● On the International Day of the Disappeared, Aug. 30, 2011, participant Ed Atadero
posted about removing profile photos in remembrance of the disappeared. This became
part of a large Facebook meme, which was covered by GMANews.TV.
● Right after the Davao City training, Liezl Bugtay, one of the participants, used the online
application Storify to document Davaoeños’ Twitter reactions to a news item on Mayor
Sarah Duterte in her blog.
● During the actual trainings, participants used the twitter hashtag #Digibak (short for
Digital Tibak. Tibak is the local term for activists) for information they learned during the
training. The same hashtag was used to identify all attendees of the training nationwide.
● The collective Philippine human rights blog HROnlinePH organized a fellowship and
participants to contribute to the blog site.
● During the 2011 State of the Nation Address, some attendees initiated the use of the
hashtag #We Want Pinoy To, a call to make President NoyNoy Aquino aware of the
different concerns of advocates. This spread among Expanded Digital Activism
participants, as well as among members of their organizations. It became one of the 10
most trending hashtags in the Philippines during that week.
● Emil Tapnio, co-author of this article, gained prominent Twitter followers from
opinion-makers and international and local media whose interest was captured by his
recounting of the training.
Clearly, development workers saw this avenue as an inexpensive yet effective way to instill
advocacy into the stream of public consciousness. The civil society organizations we trained
knew that social media is most effective when it supplements the traditional mode of
campaigning to encourage collective action against human rights abuses. As mobile phones
reach even the most remote citizens, and internet penetration – and along with it social media
usage – widens its reach in the Philippines, these tools will become potentially more valuable to
civil society, citizens, and officials in their advocacy efforts. As skills in these tools are acquired,
careful attention needs to be paid to how much impact is generated on the daunting
development challenges facing the country

e. Society

The Internet is becoming the most important tool to humans today. There are many different
uses for every kind of person. For instance, online banking saves time and money over
traditional banking. Small businesses have been rewriting the rules to commerce with the use of
the Internet. The Internet will continue to grow while people find more uses for it every day. It is
able to find information on any topic imagined at your greatest convenience.

As the Internet keeps growing, problems continue growing as well. Researchers argue some
disadvantages of an Internet based society. Most of these drawbacks are a result of decreased
face-to-face communication and the ability to escape identity.

Although there are conflicting research findings on this topic, an article published by Science
Daily reported that time spent on the Internet was associated with later declines in within house
family communication and a decrease in the number of friends and acquaintances with which
they kept ties.

3. Services of the Internet

1)Communication Services:

Communication is one of the most popular services of the internet. We are using internet-based
communication services every day to contact family and friends. It is also known as Internet
Telephony. Some of the internet communication services are Instant Messaging, Internet
Telephony, and VOIP, Email, IRC, Videoconferencing, etc. Let's look at them one by one.

a) Instant Messaging

Instant Messaging (IM) is a type of online chat that offers text communication over the internet in
real-time

b) Email
Email stands for Electronic Mail. It is a paperless method of sending messages(text, files, or
images) from one person to another or many people at the same time using the internet. In
1996, there was more email than postal mail being sent.
c) Internet Telephony and VoIP

In traditional telephony, we sends phone calls, fax, voicemail over landlines, but in Internet
Telephony that stuff are done using the internet.IN internet telephony our voice which is in
analog voice gets converted into digital voice (binary form) which gets the transfer over the
internet as IP packets from one phone to another.

d) Video Conferencing

Video Conferencing is Internet Services where two or more people located in separate
geographical locations do live audio-video communication. So, it is a real-time conferencing
service for the internet.

2) Information retrieval services:

One reason why a computer network such as the Internet has been created was, to allow users
to access remote computers and transfer files from one machine to another. This internet
service includes FTP, FTPS, SFTP(Simple File Transfer Protocol), Telnet, SSH File Transfer
Protocol, Trivial File Transfer Protocol, etc.

a) FTP

FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol. It is an internet utility software which is used for uploading
and downloading files.FTP enables access to remote computer folders and allows files and
folders to be transferred between different computers

b) SFTP

SFTP stands for SSH File Transfer Protocol. Sometimes it is called Secure File Transfer
Protocol. It is more secure than FTP. It supports the complete SSH protocol protection and
authentication feature, including the SSH key.

c) Telnet (Remote Computing)

Telnet stands for Telecommunication Network. Telnet allows the client to log in to the remote
server for accessing remote resources. It uses TCP port 23. It is not much secure. We use Putty
software for getting remote access to the server.

SSH

SSH stands for Secure Shell. Secure than Telnet.Same work as Telnet.SSH sends all the data
in an encrypted format. It uses a secure channel for transferring data and command over the
network.SSH uses High bandwidth.

3) WWW (World Wide Web)

WWW is one of the main services of the internet. Most of us think that the Internet and WWW
are the same but actually not. The Internet is Infrastructure and the Web is just a service
provided on the Internet. The Internet is a network of networks and the Web is just information
present in the network.
The inventor of the Web: Tim Berners Lee and Robert Cailliau.

4) Web Services

There are lots of applications built in various programming languages. Some built using .net,
some in Java, some in python, angular, node js. There may be some ways of communicating
with each other. And web services solve this problem. Web services provide a common platform
that allows multiple applications to communicate with each other whatever programming
languages are used for making applications. So it acts as a standard medium of a passing
message (data) between the client application( made by using android, vue, angular, react or
any frontend language in general) and a server application(java,.net, python, etc in general) in
World Wide web.

In our traditional web application when the client requests information to the server then in
response the server sends pages along with data. But in web services, data is sent back from
the server to a client in JSON or XML format. This format can then be used by any client
application like angular, android, vue, react, etc. This format is programming languages
independent.

5) Directory Services ( like DNS, LDAP )

Directory services map network resource names to network addresses and create a network
name structure. Let's look at network directory services like DNS and LDAP.

6) Automatic Network Address Configuration

Giving a unique IP address to all the systems in a network is done by Automatic Network
Address Configuration devices like DHCP(Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol)Server.DHCP
server's main works are to make sure that no two systems got the same IP address.

Our home router is already pre-configured with the DHCP server and we should not have to
worry much about assigning dynamic IP to the computer. Suppose a computer connects to a
network then this computer will request for an IP address to the router, then in the router, we
have a DHCP server, then what DHCP Server does is it looks in a pool of available IP
addresses if found then send back to the computer and finally your computer will have IP which
is dynamic in nature.

7) Network Management Services

Network management services are also one of the important services of the internet which are
helpful for network managers. Network management services help in preventing, monitoring,
diagnosing, and solving issues related to the network.

9) Time Services
Network Time Protocol (NTP) is a popular time service on the internet that helps to synchronize
and set the computer clock with great precision. Computer clocks are synced to either
Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) or Co-ordinated University Time (UTC).NTP is the oldest
computer protocol currently in use.

10) Usenet News

Usenet is known as the 'User's Network.' It is one of the oldest networks where users can post
files to news servers and other members can access it.

11) Newsgroups

It is an active Online Discussion Forum, which can easily be accessed through the Usenet.
Each newsgroup includes discussions on a particular subject that are implied in the newsgroup
name.

Users can view and follow the newsgroup and comment on the post through newsreader
software. Accessing these newsgroups also requires a Usenet Subscription which may cost you
a charge.

12) E-commerce

E-commerce is Internet-based buying and sale of goods and services. Today, almost anything
that is available in the market can be purchased through e-commerce.

Activity 1.4

Create a 150-word essay about the advantages and disadvantages you think about the rapid
change from the traditional up to the modern technology.

In this modern world today, people cannot live without internet such as mobile phones,
computers, etc. These devices have gently taken an important part in people’s day by
day existence and being without them would be unbelievable for some of us.but there
are some advantages and disadvantages that technology can cause us, The evolution
