Cummins: Fault Code: 297 PID: P223 SPN: 1084 FMI: 3

This document provides troubleshooting steps for fault code 297 related to an OEM pressure sensor circuit on a Cummins engine. The steps include inspecting wiring and connectors for damage, checking sensor voltage, testing for open and short circuits in the wiring, and verifying ECM response. The process involves disconnecting and reconnecting components to isolate issues and determine if replacing the sensor, wiring harness, or ECM is needed to resolve the fault code.

OEM PRESSURE SENSOR CIRCUIT

CUMMINS

FAULT CODE: 297

PID: P223
SPN: 1084
FMI: 3

OEM Pressure Sensor Circuit

DESCRIPTION
The OEM sensor signal is used by the electronic control module
(ECM) to monitor the OEM pressure. The OEM pressure is used by
the ECM in one of two ways: 1. The ECM can shut down the engine
based on an OEM pressure input value exceeding or falling below a
customer-specified value. 2. The ECM can control a device (dual-
output driver A and driver B) based on the value of the OEM
pressure. A sensor that has failed high can be caused by an open
circuit in the signal or return wire, voltage shorts in the signal or
return wire, or a faulty sensor.
The sensor voltage signal is the responsibility of the OEM. Refer to
the OEM manual for specifications.
COMPONENT LOCATION
The location varies with the OEM. Refer to the OEM manual.

TROUBLESHOOTING STEPS
Step 1A) Turn key switch OFF and disconnect the OEM harness from the OEM pressure sensor. Inspect the
OEM harness and sensor connector pins for the following:
• Bent or broken pins
• Pushed back or expanded pins
• Corroded pins
• Moisture in or on the connector
• Dirt or debris in or on the connector pins

No damaged pins?

Yes - Go to 1B No - Repair or replace the OEM harness or the OEM

pressure sensor
Go to 4A

Step 1B) Turn key switch OFF and disconnect the OEM harness from the OEM pressure sensor. Check the
voltage of the OEM pressure sensor.

Voltage between (+)0.5 to 4.5 VDC?

Yes - Go to 2A No - Replace the OEM pressure sensor, or repair

OEM pressure sensor voltage source/wiring
Go to 4A

Step 2A) Turn key switch OFF and disconnect the OEM harness from the OEM pressure sensor.
Disconnect the OEM harness from the ECM. Inspect the OEM harness and connector pins for the following:
• Bent or broken pins
• Pushed back or expanded pins
• Corroded pins
• Moisture in or on the connector
• Dirt or debris in or on the connector pins

No damaged pins?

Yes - Go to 2B No - Repair or replace the OEM harness

Go to 4A

Step 2B) Turn key switch ON and read the fault codes using the diagnostic tool.

Fault Code 2967 active?

Yes - Go to 2C No - Repair is complete

Go to 4B

Step 2C) Turn key switch OFF and disconnect the OEM harness from the OEM pressure sensor.
Disconnect the OEM harness from the ECM. Check for an open circuit in the signal wire. Measure the
resistance from pin 48 of the OEM harness connector to the appropriate pin of the OEM pressure sensor
connector.
Less than 10 ohms?

Yes - Go to 2D No - Replace the OEM harness

Go to 4A

Step 2D) Turn key switch OFF and disconnect the OEM harness from the OEM pressure sensor.
Disconnect the OEM harness from the ECM. Check for a short circuit from the signal wire to all other pins.
Measure the resistance from pin 48 of the OEM harness connector to all other pins in the OEM harness
connector.

More than 100k ohms?

Yes - Go to 3A No - Replace the OEM harness

Go to 4A

Step 3A) Turn key switch OFF and disconnect the OEM harness from the ECM. Check for appropriate ECM
response. Install a jumper wire between pins 48 and 20 of the OEM side of the ECM. Turn key switch ON
and read the fault codes using the diagnostic tool.

Fault Code 29 inactive and Fault Code 298 active?

Yes - Go to 4A No - Replace the ECM

Go to 4A

Step 4A) Connect all components and disable the fault code. Start the engine, and let idle for 1 minute.
Verify that Fault Code 297 is inactive.
