Cummins: Fault Code: 433 PID: P102 FMI: 2

The document describes troubleshooting steps for fault code 433 related to the intake manifold pressure sensor circuit on Cummins engines. Key points include: - The intake manifold pressure sensor monitors intake pressure and reports to the ECM. Fault code 433 indicates an issue with the sensor circuit. - Troubleshooting starts by inspecting the sensor and harness for damage. Pins are checked for issues. Wiring is tested for shorts and opens. - If testing finds no issues, the sensor or harness are replaced as needed. With repairs complete, the fault code is cleared and tested to confirm the issue is resolved.

INTAKE MANIFOLD PRESSURE SENSOR CIRCUIT

CUMMINS

FAULT CODE: 433

PID: P102
FMI: 2

Intake Manifold Pressure Sensor Circuit

DESCRIPTION
The intake manifold pressure sensor monitors intake manifold
pressure and passes information to the electronic control module
(ECM) through the engine harness. If intake manifold pressure
becomes too high, it will cause a derate condition.
The ECM checks for this fault only at idle speed. If the intake
manifold pressure shows too high of a value at this time, the ECM
will log a fault code.
COMPONENT LOCATION
The intake manifold pressure sensor is located in the side of the
intake manifold, just to the right of the fuel filter.

TROUBLESHOOTING STEPS
Step 1A) Turn key switch OFF and inspect the sensor circuit for tampering. Check the intake manifold
pressure sensor and the engine harness for external wires or damaged harness braiding.

No tampering?

Yes - Go to 1B No - Repair the circuit, and record the tampering

Go to 3A

Step 1B) Turn keyswitch to the OFF position and disconnect the engine harness from the intake manifold
pressure sensor. Inspect the harness and the sensor connectors for:
• Loose connector
• Corroded pins
• Bent or broken pins
• Pushed back or expanded pins
• Moisture in or on the connector
• Missing or damaged connector seals
• Dirt or debris in or on the connector pins
• Connector shell broken
• Wire insulation damage
• Damaged connector locking tab

No damaged pins?

Yes – Go to 2A No - Repair or replace the engine harness, or

replace the sensor, whichever has the damaged pins

Step 2A) Turn key switch OFF and disconnect the engine harness from the ECM. Inspect the harness and
the ECM connectors for:
• Loose connector
• Corroded pins
• Bent or broken pins
• Pushed back or expanded pins
• Moisture in or on the connector
• Missing or damaged connector seals
• Dirt or debris in or on the connector pins
• Connector shell broken
• Wire insulation damage
• Damaged connector locking tab

No damaged pins?

Yes - Go to 2B No - Repair or replace the engine harness, or

replace the ECM, whichever has the damaged pins
Go to 3A

Step 2B) Turn key switch OFF and disconnect the engine harness from the intake manifold pressure sensor.
Disconnect the engine harness from the ECM. Check for a short from pin to pin. Measure the resistance
from pin 45 in the engine harness connector to all other pins in the engine harness connector.

More than 100k ohms?

Yes - Go to 2C No - Replace the engine harness

Go to 3A

Step 2C) Turn key switch ON and disconnect the engine harness from the intake manifold pressure sensor.
Disconnect the engine harness from the ECM. Check for a short circuit to ground. Measure the resistance
from pin 45 in the engine harness connector to engine block ground.

More than 100k ohms?

Yes - Go to 2D No - Replace the engine harness

Go to 3A

Step 2D) Turn key switch OFF and disconnect the engine harness from the intake manifold pressure sensor.
Disconnect the engine harness from the ECM. Check for an open circuit in the return line. Measure the
resistance from pin 19 of the engine harness connector to pin B of the intake manifold pressure sensor
connector on the harness side.

Less than 10 ohms?

Yes - Replace the intake manifold pressure sensor No - Replace the engine harness

Step 3A) Connect all components. Turn key switch ON and disable the fault code. Start the engine, and let
idle for 1 minute. Verify that Fault Code 433 is inactive using the diagnostic tool.

Fault Code 433 inactive?

Yes - Go to 3B No – Return to troubleshooting steps or contact local

Cummins Authorized Repair Location if all steps
have been completed and checked again
Go to 1A

Step 3B) Connect all components, turn key switch ON and clear the inactive fault codes using the diagnostic
tool.
All fault codes cleared?

Yes - Repair is complete No - Troubleshoot any remaining active fault codes

with appropriate troubleshooting steps.
